The expenses are small, being less than three per cent. of the preminms and interest income.

An investigation of its affairs is made ev~ry year, and the surplus is applied iu reducing for the ensuing year the

premiums entitled to reduction. The first seven premiums are payable in full, and the right to reduction begins with

the eighth. During the last thirty years the rate of reduction has increased on the average by about one per cent. ·per

annum ; so that in the case of some of the older policies not only has the premium been reduced to nothing for some·

years, but a small addition has been made to the sum assured. .

For the year beginning 1st July, 188g, and ending 3oth June, 1890:

l'remiums commenced before July.l883 (4th series) are reduced 71 per cent.

And, as the reduction of presninms in the First Series can be carried no further, an addition of six per cent. of the

original premium has been this -year made to the sum assured.

.At a meeting of the Somerset County Council, on July 2nd, 188g, the BRISTOL MERCURY was unanimous7y selected as a
medium for the County .Advertisement.~. The Lord Lieutenant (the Earl of Cork and Orrery) then said:-" ~From personal

knowledge he could say that the BRISTOL MERCURY had. a very lm-ge circulation, not only in Bristol but all over Somerset.''

PUBLISHED DAILY, EIGHT PAGES, ONE PENNY.

THE :BRISTOL MERCURY has for many years held a distinguished place in the front rank of English provincial

journals, and is recognised as at the head of the press west of the metropolis. Bristol is, next to London and

Liverpool, the largest seaport in the United Kingdom, and has a population of nearly 300,000, more than double

that of any other Borough in England or Wales west of London and south of :Birmingham. The .BRISTOL

MERCURY is extensively distributed over this large area, whilst in Bristol and throughout the counties of

Gloucester, Somerset, Wilts, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Monmouth, and Hereford, and the whole of South Wales

it name is "as familiar in their mouths as household words.'' The unrivalled advantages which it therefore

affords have long been recognized by professional men, auctioneers, and other far-seeing men of business.

The BRISTOL MERCURY on Saturdays is one of the largest newspapers in the kingdom, and few have so

large a number of advertisements. A Weekly Supplement of eight pages of forty-eight columns can be had with

that day's number, forming a complete Weekly Newspaper of sixteen pages of 104 columns: Price of Paper and

Supplement, Twopence, or the BRISTOL MERCURY without Supplement, One Penny. ·

advantage of circulating their announcements amongst the vast and varied readers of three old-established Journals,
which severally commanded large influence and support.

1. M EN D I P G RAN IT E. This Granite is of an exceedingly hard nature, being

equal in crushing force and tenacity to the hardest known Granite, and
combining therewith the natural adhesive properties of the carboniferous
series, constitutes it the very best material for Macadamizing on heavily
trafficked Roads.

2. BLACK ROCK. Is specially adapted for ordinary Macadamizing; exceedingly

durable, its power of resistance being equal to the hardest known material
of the same kind, making a smooth surface to the roads, and therefore
rendering the traffic comparatively noiseless, whilst the amount of dirt
arising from its use is reduced to a minimum.

3. BUILDING STONE. As a Stone for Quoins, Plinths, Base-Courses, Quay

Walls, Kerbing, Paving, Guttering, Pitching, &c., this is specially adapted,
as a neat and regular surface is obtained from the natural beds of the Rock,
and at a comparatively low cost.

4. GRAVEL. The Gravel is sharp, clean and bright, and of a beautiful colour for

Carriage Drives, Side Walks, &c. It possesses great adhesive properties, and
readily forms itself into a complete concrete surface.

5. ASPHALTE. The Asphalte at these works is made by a Special Patent-Machine

Process. It surpasses every other article of the kind for Town Paths, Cause-
ways, Courts, Yards, Floors, Railway Platforms, &c., &c.; and can be delivered
at any Station ready for laying, and requiring no skilled labour.

6. Ll M E. This is made from selected Beds of Rock; is of the strongest kind, is

perfectly white, and admits of 25 per cent. more sand, ashes, &c., than any
other. It is therefore the best and most economical for Builders, Plasterers,
&c., as well as an article of Manure.

The whole of the Broken Stone at all the Quarries is crushed by the most approved
and modem Machinery; and Railways and Tramways in connection with the Quarries

join the Great Western Railway and the London & South-Western Railway systems, and

are worked by miniature Locomotive Engines, thus putting the works in direct communi-
cation with all the large Railway systems, and enables the Proprietor to supply the
markets at the lowest possible prices.

PRICES QUOTED FOR DELIVERY FREE AT ALL RAILWAY STATIONS.
