Christmas trees decorated and lights lit. “We had everything plugged in;
everything was lit and moving,” Bertoia explained. Annese’s signature
display of a Santa bust on a wall with 60 gift boxes tumbling down
was duplicated in the gallery. Bertoia showcased his collections to best
honor what was about to be sold, and the collectors/buyers attending
loved it.

“Tony has such an eye for beauty,” Bertoia said. “That was his
focus. He didn’t collect to fill a void or get everything ever produced
in one category. He was very discerning, collected what he loved, and
collectors loved what he chose.”

Tony Annese was and continues to be an icon in the world of toy
collecting. “He never missed an auction or show,” Bertoia said. Other
collectors knew that if Tony began bidding, it would not be an easy get.
Still, Annese’s greatest “collection” was the friends he made. “His life
revolved around his collecting friends,” Bertoia went on. “And he was
always so generous with his time, knowledge, and even his collections.”

Christmas at the Annese household meant major decorating. “He had
so many great pieces, and they would all come out for the holidays,”
Bertoia explained. “Multiple trees were decorated. Vignettes were set
up, and Tony would then host an open house for the public to come
enjoy his things.”

His decision to sell his collections was not an easy one. “His house
was full. The shelves were stuffed. It was just time for him,” Bertoia
explained.

The Tony Annese collection can be broken down into several
categories, with each producing auction highlights. First are the
Christmas pieces. In press material for the auction, Annese explained
that his passion began in the 1980s when he bought some items from
Department 56, a manufacturer of holiday collectibles. In the 1990s
he gave these away to friends and relatives after discovering antique
Christmas pieces. Annese then became involved with the Golden Glow
of Christmas Past club and was later elected chairman of its board.

Annese said he enjoys the Christmas category because the holiday is
“such a strong part of American culture. Every manufacturer, no matter
what they produced, had some sort of Christmas items. You might say
it’s the ultimate crossover.” His favorite pieces? “I love the clockwork
Santa nodders, especially the ones with glass eyes and rosy-cheeked
faces. Christmas store displays and lighting are also a big part of my
collection, as are Christmas ornaments.”
