Biota Guard –
a new paradigm in real-time
environmental effect monitoring
Biota Guard is an award-winning technology and service company offering a
unique method of integrated environmental monitoring.
Increasing environmental awareness and concern in both the public domain and
the industry have turned environmental management into a major strategic factor,
as the oil companies compete on the global stage. Sustainable development and
operations in environmentally-sensitive regions require new technologies and
methods for the monitoring and control of the marine environment.
Biota Guard enables a sophisticated multi-sensor-based, real-time service for
monitoring day-to-day operations that delivers:
• A game changing leak detector with sensitivity far beyond any other field
proven technology
• Long-term environmental effect monitoring, documenting the environmental
footprint of a given oil & gas related operation in real time
• Environmental analysis available on multiple platforms, including an operator’s
Integrated Operations room
Biota Guard adopts a cause-and-effect approach to environmental monitoring,
enabling remedial actions to be taken before an operational event can develop
into a serious environmental problem.
The biosensors most commonly deployed by Biota Guard (e.g. instrumented blue
mussels) are proven to be up to 1400 times more sensitive than conventional
sensors to oil in water.

A holistic approach to marine
environmental monitoring
Data recorded by Biota Guard’s sensors are integrated with those from other relevant
information channels to determine the cause of an event and its environmental
impact.
The adaptive subsea Sensor Arrays are also designed to carry biomarker organisms
collected at specific intervals for detailed health-related analysis.

Data Collection
Biota Guard specializes in analyzing vital information captured from monitoring
the environment of interest.
The Biota Guard adaptive subsea Sensor Array provides real-time chemical,
physical and biological data in addition to accommodating offline biomarkers.
Other relevant process data from daily operations are included, such as water
sample analysis, event notifications from discharges and topographical and
hydrographical measurements.
Data Analysis and Management
The automated analytical framework is managed by the Biota Guard Expert
Center. Advanced mathematical and statistical tools are coupled with proprietary
algorithms and methodologies, supporting an integrated overview of the
environmental “footprint” of a given field or operation.
End User
Biota Guard provides a user interface communicating complex analysis in
an informative and intuitive way for fast and reliable decision support. The
visualization tool is developed in close cooperation with the Oil & Gas industry,
giving a flexible and configurable system for displaying the right information at
the right time, providing the essential interfaces for seamless interaction in an
integrated operational environment. The Biota Guard solution includes a time slider
functionality that gives the user the opportunity to play back incidents that have
occurred. With the Biota Guard solution, the user is given a tool where integration,
sharing, collaboration and documentation are key.

About Biota Guard
Biota Guard was spun out of IRIS (International Research Institute of Stavanger) in
2006.
Our main business objective is to offer the Oil & Gas and marine industries an
unique opportunity to enhance their environmental management capability and
provide a fact-based response to unmet environmental monitoring needs.
The Biota Guard system has been developed with technical and financial support
from Statoil, Shell, GDF Suez, Total, Eni and ConocoPhillips. Additional funding has
been provided by the Norwegian Research Council, Innovation Norway, the SR
Bank Næringsutvikling Foundation and the Norwegian Design Council.
