Hunterdon County officials reported no injuries or major damage. But it sounded and felt unlike anything local residents have ever experienced here. Descriptions follow: I thought a run-away train hit the building. I thought a plane crashed. It sounded like a garbage truck going by above and below my apartment. It sounded like a convoy of army tanks going by. Maybe a big truck was going by, but it kept going and I noticed my water Educators of the Year– Pictured are Branchburg School District administrators and the Educators of the Year and Educational Services Professionals of the Year recipients, from left, Branchburg Central Middle School Vice Principal Chris Derflinger; BCMS honoree Katherine Aldabagh (Instructional Aide); Superintendent Dr. Karen Chase; Stony Brook School honoree Lauren Knoke (Literacy Coach); BCMS honoree Zachariah Miracle (Special Educaion Teacher); BCMS Acting Principal Chris Steffner; Whiton Elementary School honoree Brad Moor (3rd Grade Teacher); Whiton honoree Heather Lilly (Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant); Whiton Principal Dee Shober, Stony Brook Principal Kristen Kries, and honoree Nina Manger (4th Grade Special Education Teacher). That morning, WOR radio and other news outlets described the earthquake as centered in Tewksbury and Whitehouse Station, as well as in Lebanon. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported it was the strongest earthquake to strike New Jersey in nearly 250 years, and the third strongest on record for the state in 280 years of record-keeping (1737-2017). The only two stronger ones: A 5.2 magnitude in 1737 and 5.3 in 1783. Rumblings continued for several days with more than 50 aftershocks reported. The Rookie League Hot Rods get ready for the parade. College Tickets $5 per person Rain Date: June 15, 2024 Food Truck Festival The Branchburg Township Committee was set to hold a public hearing on the proposed $26.2 million budget on April 22, at press time. The budget raises the municipal tax rate by 7.4% and is a 6.3% increase over last year’s budget of $24.65 million. The annual municipal purpose tax on a house assessed at $600,000 is estimated at $1,902. The proposed tax rate for municipal purpose, which funds police, roads and recreation, is 31.7 cents per $100 of assessed value, up from the 2023 rate of 29.5 cents. The biggest increase in the budget is a 38.2% hike in debt service, mostly due to the $20 million purchase of land at Route 22 and Bigger Budgets Coming Station Road in North Branch to thwart warehouse development. Voters approved the purchase in a non-binding referendum on the November 2022 election ballot. The township has not yet publicly discussed plans for the property. Because the Branchurg School District and Somerset County budgets have not been finalized, the total tax rate for property owners has not been determined. At press time, the School District budget was to be adopted on April 25. The $57,946,004 budget for 2024-2025 raises the tax levy to $46,717,400 from $45,077,591 in 2023-2024. The final budget will be posted at https://www.branchburg.k12.nj.us/. Parts of the United States, Mexico, and Canada got a glimpse of the solar eclipse that passed over the North American continent. This eclipse was the last of its kind to be visible anywhere in the U.S. until Aug. 23, 2044. Names like Mary Kay Muckenhoupt, Lilly Case, Freida Miller, Alma Deak, Dotty Flynn, Lois Paleck, Hedy Post, Jim Hanley, and Betty Murrison will live on as stories and history have been passed down year by year. During the evening the 2024- 2025 officers will be installed and members will volunteer for all club committees. These women make the club the special group it is! This month, Ann Ribinsky Brown is featured. Ann is a retired high school English teacher who moved to Branchburg in 1992 and joined the Branchburg Woman’s Club in 1994 - that’s 32 years if you are counting! Currently she serves BWC as trustee and is a past president. In the College District of the State Federation of Woman’s Clubs, Ann organized the Past President’s luncheon this year. She is retiring as Civic Engagement and Outreach Chair. In the past, she has chaired the State Spelling Bee and, for four years, the Girl’s Career Institute at Douglas College at Rutgers University. She has served on the State Board of Directors for 14 years, filling many leadership positions with a dedication to accuracy and detail. Ann counts the friendships she has made at the state and in our community as the most rewarding part of participation in the club. Most probably, Ann could not be categorized as a typical BWC member. She illustrates how you can maximize your participation! However, there is a place for you in BWC. If you are a young, working mother, you can join the club at monthly meetings when the speaker interests you. You can pick up a few items while doing your weekly shopping for the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation or the local food bank. The shelter had recently housed a nursing cat with a single kitten about the same age as the orphaned masked bandits. Both were placed in with the cat, in hope she would accept and nurse them. This was a last chance effort, and if it worked, minimal intervention by the staff would be required. Consideration of their eventual disposition was set aside, to be dealt with, if, the raccoons did manage to survive. Almost immediately it was clear the cat accepted the orphans and the raccoon kits made no distinction between a raccoon or cat milk dispenser. When I heard the shelter was looking for a home for the raccoon kits, I stopped by to check it out. Sure enough, the raccoons were available for adoption, but had to remain for at least another week or so until the cat stopped nursing. I soon received a call to take one of the raccoons. First order of business of course was to give the little gray rag with big fleshy feet a name. Having read Sterling North’s book, ”Rascal,” a story about a raccoon he raised, prospective names based on the animal’s Continued on Page 9

Instead of learning about raccoons from a book, the opportunity for a different perspective presented itself, Nooccar seemed a perfect name. KMR, Kitty Milk Replacer was the primary source of nourishment and it was apparent Nooccar was thriving. Once Nooc was old enough to climb out of his cardboard home, he was taken outside for exercise. The little guy would follow close behind, pivoting in step to any abrupt turn, as if on a string. Washing dishes would prompt Nooccar to climb up a pant leg and instinctively engage the water in a splash fight. Adapting to his new parents’ sleeping habits was not a problem for this creature of the night. For several months he would go to bed, on the bed, as if in a cozy den, snuggled with his mom and siblings. At times he would sleep on the headboard shelf next to the clock radio. House breaking Nooccar was never a problem as he naturally did what he had to, on newspaper spread in a box in the bathroom. Nooccar’s inner child soon emerged and he embraced the night as his curiosity drove him to explore every nook and cranny. Just as an isolated primitive might view modern conveniences and furnishings as having a function different than intended, Nooc was a source of endless entertainment. The large bed in one room had a bedspread which hung down to the hardwood floor. Nooccar would go under the bed, lay on his back, hook into the box spring’s porous cloth and shoot himself along the slippery floor from one side of the bed to the other. At each pause, a nose and mischievous eyes would invite a ‘catch me if you can’ challenge. This relationship was so interesting if you think in terms of an alien life form from another planet adapting to life on earth. A wild raccoon surviving on its ability to adapt to a strange world for which his evolutionary behaviors had no reference. A profound lesson that imagination and adaptability are the key to survival and trump intelligence and effort. How intelligence is defined is quite subjective. There was a two foot tall, black plastic cat, filled with pennies that we spilled on the bed to put in penny wrappers. Nooccar saw the pile of copper coins and planted himself in a sitting position, hind legs outspread, body upright. He would reach out and pull the coins up against his belly, any attempt to touch the pennies resulted in an uncharacteristic growl. Perhaps Midas was reincarnated as a raccoon? Eventually Nooc wore out his welcome in the house and a very large cage was constructed to avoid someone tossing him out a window. His enthusiastic foray into the large potted plants, jewelry chest and a jaunt up the beige drapes, just before tipping a tall metal cabinet against the bathroom door to block its entry, prompted the construction of a home he could call his own. Raccoon families break up at the end of summer, and I guess Nooccar was doing what comes naturally. Nooccar was always welcome in the house to play with the poodle or wrestle outside with Duke, the German shepherd. His favorite drink was bottled ice tea. As you held the bottle for him, he would place a fleshy paw on your hand and make mewing sounds as the drank. Nooccar’s cage was about seven feet by five, with a shelf stretching the width of the cage above the narrow doorway. On top of the shelf was a plywood box with a round hole cut in one end. In the winter Nooccar would plug up the doorway with his ample butt to cut the wind and keep the cold at bay. Raccoons will build a thick layer of winter fat as extra protection from the cold. Whenever I was out in the yard working, I would put Nooc in a sycamore tree and he would spend the day rooting among the branches. When evening came, Nooccar would climb down onto my shoulder and go back into the cage. Nooccar was gentle and friendly with me until I moved away, then he bonded with my dad. Nooccar never forgave me for leaving and would attack if he was out of his cage when I visited. On two occasions, during an attempted reconciliation, Nooccar sunk a canine deep into my palm at the base of my thumb. I wear the scars as my initiation into the clan of the raccoon. Lesson learned, the ability for animals to adapt is amazing, and individually, each owns a personality distinct from others of its kind; same is true for humans. Regular veterinary visits were scheduled and the local conservation officer and health department were informed of my raccoon guest. Dining mostly on dog food, with oyster crackers and crayfish on occasion, he lived 11 years. Life expectancy in the wild is about 18 months. Contact [email protected]. She answered lots of questions and provided so many helpful hints. We also celebrated members with April birthdays. Member Kathy Duffy provided information for the group from Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services. Their upcoming Aging Well Expo will be held at the Senior Wellness Center, 876 E. Main St., Bridgewater, on Saturday, May 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be a tour of the facility and information on how the Office on Aging & Disability Services can help support seniors in the community. Admission is free, registration is encouraged. Call 908-704-6346 or email [email protected].
