The Primary Election is Tuesday, June 4, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Incumbents Brendon Beatrice and Mayor Anna Columbus are running unopposed as Republican candidates for Township Committee. No Democrats are running for the two Township Committee seats in the Primary. At the neighborhood level, District Committee seats are being contested in an unusual tug-of-war with the Somerset County Republican Organization (SCRO.) Seats in Districts 3, 6, 7, and 8 have candidates from both the SCRO and the Branchburg Township Republican Municipal Committee-endorsed “Somerset Winning Again” (SWA.) Sample ballots listing candidates and polling locations were mailed out for Election Day voting. For additional information, call the Township Clerk’s office at 908-526-1300 ext. 104. Primary Election Day is June 4 Longtime Branchburg resident James “Jimmy” Ostroski has been named Artist of the Month for July at the Gallery on Main in Somerville. Ostroski calls himself a “reemerging artist.” “Now semi-retired I have once again begun painting. I have painted a number of local townscapes and landmarks using bright colors in a slightly naive and fun style. Anyone from Branchburg will recognize most of the subjects. The titles of some of these are: “The Old South Branch School House,” “Phlox along the Chambers Brook,” “Route 202 South” and “The Sunset Motel,” he noted. “As I got older, I am now 75, I have begun to look at the world differently. For many years I lived without really seeing the things around me. Now I see them for the first time, the colors, the shapes and perhaps their hidden stories and humor.” When you live this many years, he said, “There are many experiences and memories... I prefer to focus upon the happy ones. The memories, the colors and perhaps the hidden stories are what I choose to bring into my art.” Ostroski’s paintings will be displayed all month. There will be an open house reception on Saturday, July 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. where all are welcome to join the artist for charcuterie and wine. It has been a busy time at the township offices. I and the other Township Committee members continue to work with staff to ensure that the quality of life in Branchburg continues. One of the most popular undertakings we have done in many years is our streetscape tree planting program. Using developer funds (no tax dollars), we have planted 7- to 8-foot-tall trees on the front lawns of residential properties throughout town (residents volunteered to participate). The trees are free to residents, who must maintain them. So far, we have planted over 500 trees to beautify our streetscapes and parks. We are also continuing steps to make sure that government services and transactions are available online so you may “Skip the Trip” to town hall for municipal matters. Soon we will be able to renew dog/cat licenses, dumpster permits, park and ride permits, and much more online so you can “Skip the Trip” to town hall. Maintaining our quality of life is a paramount part of our mission at the township. Not only do we work to keep the town beautiful, but we want to make sure residents are comfortable. We undertook a complete renovation to our senior citizen center, located in the Whiton Hills apartment complex. Our seniors now enjoy a room with fresh paint, new carpeting and a new kitchen complete with new appliances. For any seniors not part of our Recreation Senior Citizen Club, what are you waiting for?! Please contact our recreation department and join the fun. This past fall Norfolk Southern trains started to blow their horns again as the train crossed at the Lehigh Road crossing near Woodfern Road. For residents in this area this is a horrible turn of events, as the horns blow throughout the day and night creating an unlivable situation. We have been working diligently with Congressman Kean’s office to reverse this decision. By the time you read this letter, we hope to have the horns silenced and work underway on the crossing to create a “quiet zone.” I would be remiss if I did not mention our newly revitalized Police Department. In May 2023 the Township Committee appointed Richard Buck as our 4th Chief of Police. Over the course of this past year Chief Buck and the entire department have worked very hard to create a department that will certainly be the envy of every town in New Jersey. In April of this year the Midland School awarded our police with the “Public Sector Representative of the Year award - For embodying innovation, collaboration and success in partnership with the Midland community.” We could not be prouder of our new Branchburg Police Department. Your 2023-2024 property tax bill shows how your tax dollars are being spent. The Township has taken careful steps over the past few years to ensure that our financial “house” is in order. Additionally, your tax dollars are helping to fund our volunteer fire and rescue squad services. These volunteer organizations are the heart of our emergency management team and are fully staffed by your friends and neighbors. Please remember to support these volunteers during their annual fundraising activities. The members of the Township Committee, and the Township staff, recognize the trust you have placed in us to manage your local government. We have made it our daily goal to produce the most cost effective and efficient organization possible. June 2024 • The Branchburg News 5 What is happening at Solberg Airport? Solberg Airport is engaged in a process that will lead to airport expansion similar to Morristown Airport. How could this happen? With final NJDOT approval the 740-acre airport becomes eligible for 10’s of millions of federal dollars for construction through the State’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP). Why is airport expansion a concern? An expansion creating an “Advanced Service” airport, accommodating mid-size jet traffic, will lower our property values and degrade our quality of life. What can citizens do to stop an expansion? • The NJDOT needs to hear from you. Make them aware of local opposition early in this process. • Appeal to elected officials for assistance. • Stay informed. Visit the website below. • Spread the word. • Join BRAAC. Zalewski, Jr., Director NJ Lie.# 4703 By Michael Skomba, Head Strength Coach, Somerville High School Owner of Skomba Strength LLC As the Head Strength & Conditioning coach at Somerville High School, I believe the weight room is a microcosm of the best parts of any school community. Walk in the Ville weight room on any day and you will see cadres of students working in every square inch of the space. Once the school’s auto body shop, the blue collar nature of the room has never left. Our young people of Branchburg and Somerville are putting incredible amounts of energy into building their physical attributes while learning life lessons through delayed gratification, cooperation, and the crucible of hard work. Once the students walk through the threshold of the weight room door, they transport to a place where they can’t check their cell phone and are required to be fully present in an environment that focuses on continuous progress. The Ville weight room is a hotbed for contagious optimism. Walk in on any day and you will hear young people reaching for new heights as their teammates and their coaches cheer them on. Their voices cut through the thumping decibels of the likes of Drake or Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten” at full volume. At the Ville, the weight room training sessions are a cross-section of every demographic imaginable. Every sport on campus, every grade, and every ability level is invited to the party. Smaller teams and similar teams are paired together. The weight room attendance has logged over 400 student-athletes so far for the school year. That number continues to grow as students bring their friends and their teammates to workouts. Periodized training is instituted so that athletes can break through plateaus and reach peak performance levels. Scientific foundations and Sports Science are implemented to build out safe and effective programs. Teams train in the off-season together, in-season together, and during the postseason together. Sport coaches establish training goals for their team and I do everything in my power to make sure they reach those goals and maximize their potential. Growth is the ultimate goal. I remember the first time I walked through the weight room doors as an incoming freshman in the Summer of 2001. I will never forget the energy in the room or the camaraderie of the athletes. As an alumnus, I try to pay forward what the program and coaches gave me. As an athlete, I knew that the weight room was a place I could go to get myself right physically and mentally. As an athlete, I didn’t know it at the time, but I was building posi- Continued on Page 9 Ville Weight Room Helps Build Strong Teenagers

I watched from above as a doe and her two fawns stepped into a shallow stream which drained a large expanse of hilly farm land. The deer were partially screened by heavy vegetation and obscured from view. They remained in the water for several minutes instead of simply crossing the stream. Suddenly, splashing sounds could be heard and quick darting movements could be seen through the porous green curtain. I thought the deer had been spooked by something unseen and departed in haste. A moment later more splashing sounds and quick movement began again, interrupted by stillness. This was repeated several times and now I could see what was happening. The two fawns were playing in the cool water, hopping sideways and chasing each other. I thought at the time, this was odd behavior, though have come to learn, through observation, deer have an affinity for water beyond satisfying thirst. A deer’s body temperature hovers around 101.4 degrees and even on cool spring days, under bright sunlight, deer will lay in the shade. Lingering thick winter coats of hollow hair trap air and help to retain body heat. The hollow hair also adds buoyancy when swimming. Even in summer when their thinner coats allow more efficient heat exchange, the deer will still seek out water to cool down. Many of the wading deer have been seen in midafternoon on the hottest summer days. Does bring their fawns to water and instinctively the fawns react to the cool water, splashing about much as little children in a wading pool. A string of sweltering days was interrupted by a fast moving cold front. A short burst of heavy rain during the night muddied the South Branch and raised its level just enough to increase the speed of the current. A light foggy haze, the result of the abrupt temperature change, gave way to filtered sunlight with the promise of a clear afternoon sky. It was a pleasure to ride the current with a minimum of correction to navigate shallows and obstructions. I sought the fastest current which ran against river’s left bank. Ahead, large leaves on low hanging branches of a sycamore tree danced on the water’s surface. I had to make a slight adjustment to clear the overhang and immediately noticed within its cave like shelter, a fawn standing chest deep in the flowing water. I spun the canoe around to make it invisible to the current just long enough to digitally capture the scene before the fawn ran ashore and the current washed me downstream. I have had many close encounters with deer in the water while canoeing. If I spot them at a distance, I will use a Northwoods paddle stroke on the offside of the boat to eliminate as much movement as possible. Then move the boat in a position where the current will allow me to drift, with minor corrections, right up to the deer. On occasion, the deer and I are surprised by each other’s sudden appearance. Coming around a bend I saw a deer near the water’s edge, so I quickly exchanged my paddle for the camera. The deer saw me and ran off. Another deer with a fawn, about 30 yards away, standing in shallow water, hesitated to evaluate the situation before moving off. This gave me an opportunity to catch the doe, with the fawn at her heels, make a splashing departure. A private moment revealed between a doe and her fawn enjoying the cool flowing water much as a mom with her toddler in a backyard wading pool. That image conveys to me a sense of overwhelming tranquility which begs to induce a long meditative moment. A peaceful interlude on a quintessential summer afternoon, unexpectedly discovered along the eternal flowing waters of the South Branch. Deer will readily swim across the river even in high water and routinely wade from shore to shore as the mood strikes. On several occasions I have seen deer browsing heavily on the long undulating grass which proliferates in the warm shallow water from late spring through fall. One day while canoeing, I saw a doe, standing mid river, with her head submerged up to her ears, reminiscent of a feeding moose. What a shock to see her come up with a huge mouthful of grass. Summertime salad with dressing, and the living is easy! Deer will also feed on seaweed in saltwater bays, so these woodland Whitetail Water Follies A doe and her fawn enjoy the cool flowing water much as a mom with her toddler in a backyard wading pool. Planners Approve QuickChek The Branchburg Township Planning Board on May 14 unanimously approved a proposal to build a QuickChek convenience store and gas station at the corner of Old York Road and Route 202 across from the Police Department. A plan to build an ALDI grocery store at the site is also before the Planning Board. The state Department of Transportation will make changes to both Route 202 and the intersection to improve traffic flow at the heavily traveled intersection. Branchburg 202 LLC, the developer of the property, will add a third lane to the highway at the intersection, according to the applicant. Stormwater drainage and a sanitary sewer system serving the entire lot for both QuickChek and ALDI were included in the approval. The 5,670-square-foot convenience store and gas station will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
