April 2024 www.branchburgnews.com Branchburg Celebrates Teachers Who Make Magic The following Branchburg teachers have been named to the “Teachers Who Make Magic Class of 2024” by radio station Magic 98.3: Danielle LoCascio Special Education Teacher Nominated by: Principal Kristen Kries – Stony Brook School Danielle LoCascio is a Special Education Teacher at Stony Brook School and has been teaching for over 13 years. Students, colleagues, and parents always remark about her beautiful smile, the passion she has for her chosen profession, and the positivity and unique teaching methods she brings to her classroom. She sees the upside in all situations and works to help her students do the same. Danielle wants her students to see that one challenging moment does not define them or set the course for their day. She cares deeply for all members of the school’s community and serves as a mentor and guide to new staff members. She is an excellent communicator and keeps the families of her students informed of any obstacles that arise but more importantly makes sure parents and guardians are aware of student success. Danielle’s students show extraordinary growth within her classroom, and she makes sure to work with students on their individual areas of need. Danielle is always looking for new ideas, resources, and strategies to best meet the needs of her students and once she secures these resources, she shares them with her colleagues. Danielle wants her students to excel in the classroom and beyond. Adriana Weighart Speech Teacher Nominated by: Principal Dee Shober –Whiton Elementary School Adriana Weighart is a speech teacher who has been a part of Whiton Elementary School in Neshanic Station since 2011. As a speech teacher, Adriana has a caseload of students; however, she considers all the school’s students as her own. She works with individual teachers so she can provide strategies and tools, so all students are successful and shares her techniques with families because she knows how important communication is in any type of environment. Adriana is bilingual and helps out when a staff member or teacher is trying to communicate with parents. She does so willingly, giving up her own prep or lunchtime to make sure that all families feel comfortable and understand what is being shared with them. For several years in a row, Adriana has been a formal mentor to new speech teachers to help them transition into their positions. New staff members feel relieved to know they can go to Adriana with any questions or help with lesson plans. Colleen Nejmeh 5th Grade Teacher Nominated by: Teacher Madison Hill – Stony Brook School Colleen Nejmeh has been teaching for over 19 years and currently educates 5th graders. If you ever met Colleen, you wouldn’t need a shot of morning caffeine to start your day, because she arrives at school each day with a contagious smile and positive energy. From dance routines to spontaneous role playing, and everything in between, Colleen is up for anything to ensure the students are having fun and learning. Colleen works exceptionally hard to be the best version of herself for her students and co-workers. She not only comes into school early, but she also stays late to better prepare and plan for her students. Colleen also makes time to be active on several school committees, advising clubs and enrichment programs and takes part in extracurricular activities such as the “DIY Up-cycled Crafts and Jewelry” club. In this club, she taught students how to create pieces of jewelry from things you’d never think to use. She also oversees enrichment programs during the summer months such as “Creating a Pollinator Garden” and “Fairy Tale Reform School.” She participates in the Extended School Year program (ESY) where she continues to work with students with disabilities and helps them prepare for the next school year. It is challenging to get students interested in coming to school over the summer, so to combat this, Colleen creates themes like “Restaurant Week” to get the students excited. Sonia Pereira 8th Grade Language Arts Teacher Nominated by: Chris Derflinger – Vice Principal, Branchburg Central Middle School Sonia Pereira teaches 8th grade Language Arts at Branchburg Central Middle School and goes above and beyond for her students. She holds them to high standards while using her humor and connections with individual students to help them continuously soar in their skills and creativity. She is an important part of the language arts department at BCMS, often collaborating with colleagues to ensure that the programs function efficiently and deliberately. When she takes the time to help struggling students at Guided Study (afterschool program), she always supports the teacher’s vision while finding ways to put her own spin to help children find success. She has an awesome personality and has an incredible way of connecting with students that is meaningful and special. The Feb. 1 meeting featured a presentation on Fall Prevention with Kimberly Myers of the Brain Injury Alliance of NJ. She is the granddaughter of longtime resident and member Bob Myers. Kim did an outstanding presentation with lots of great advice for the group and handed out flashlights and a checklist identifying ways to improve safety in our homes. On Feb. 15 we celebrated Valentine’s Day with all the trimmings – candy, cards and love songs. We Busy Days for Branchburg Senior Citizen Program partnered with Mr. Christopher Boehm, art teacher at Whiton Elementary School, to make sure all of the seniors received a Valentine card. The children crafted beautiful cards with sweet sentiments for our seniors, to let them know they are thought of and loved. What a great surprise for all! We send out a huge Thank You to Mr. Boehm and his students. Entertainer Jamie DeJesus serenaded the seniors with his amazing voice, singing songs from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. We ended the month with a lovely brunch at the Somerset County Vo-Tech’s Trade Wins Cafe. The breakfast baked goods and meal were outstanding, all prepared and served by the Culinary Arts students. They are truly passionate about their trade, which was evident in their service, food prep and presentation. Their responses to the numerous questions were equally enthusiastic, we will be returning for an Elegant Luncheon in May. The rain in March did not deter our hearty group. On March 6, with a full bus, we headed to Philadelphia for the Flower Show. The Phillie Convention Center never looked so good! The entrance view was breathtaking with a sky full of pinks and purples, and the landscapes on display were nothing short of enchanting. Our meeting on March 7 did not come in like a lion, but we did have senior member and longtime Branchburg resident Janet Kolb bring her two therapy dogs with her. Janet provided a wonderful look into the lives of Ollie and Riley, two very well-behaved Shetland Sheepdogs, affectionately known as Shelties. Ollie and Riley provide comfort to children and adults in many different settings. It wouldn’t be March without celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with corned beef and cabbage. A lovely catered Irish feast complete with Irish tunes was our second March meeting. Everyone was wearin’ their green. Meetings in April are on the 4th with Ann Thornton - Insiders Guide to Home Improvements - and 18th with Lorri Woodward - vocal presentation. Spring/Summer program registration began on March 25. All seniors, whether or not you are a member of the Branchburg Senior Program, are welcome to take advantage of the opportunities available: Pickleball, Tennis, Cardio, Pilates, Mature Aerobics, Yoga, Chair Yoga, and Senior Mat Yoga. By Patti Zielinski On Sunday, April 7, the Somerville High School Winter Guard Boosters will host its annual Winter Guard show at Branchburg Central Middle School. Approximately 30 competing winter guard teams will attend, with a concluding performance by the SHS Scholastic Open Class Winter Guard team performing “Breaking the Slipper.” Winter Guard – known as “the sport of the arts” – is a competitive indoor color guard activity in which performers use flags, rifles, sabers and other equipment combined with dance to produce a choreographed show. Somerville Winter Guard is the 2012 Scholastic A and 2015 Scholastic Open Class Winter Guard International (WGI) World Champions. At this year’s championship, to be held April 11 to 13 at the University of Dayton in Ohio, the group is one of 51 performing in the Scholastic Open Class; over 300 groups will perform overall. Without hesitation, April invites the disheveled traveler in and notices a small parcel wrapped in green, wet with melted snowflakes. It is the gift of spring, and with it comes the remnants of the wintry month’s mercurial weather. As April encourages the sun to stay a while longer each day, the influence of March’s wintry heritage is diminished. A mere promise of favorable conditions is enough to encourage a veil of green to emerge from the cold ground in a resurrection of dormant life. Within this transitional framework, the brilliant tints of green enliven the dull gray landscape to rouse curiosity and focus attention toward the earth. Energy is a key element in attraction, and April is a time of palpable and boundless energy. The invisible movement of time appears betrayed as plants seem animated and grow before our eyes. Many spring plants have a narrow window of opportunity to emerge and mature, so their growth is accelerated. Spring beauties are ephemerals which grow in isolated patches in open woods and among short pasture grass, their pink and white striped flowers linger into May. Each short-stemmed flower is distinctly different in petal stripe and color. Some variants are almost all white with faint pink stripes, while a neighboring patch may be dominated by deeper pink petals and dark pink stripes. Color and pattern variations are the rule, which makes this flower so interesting. The variation in a way, compliments the vagaries of early spring weather and the individual character each April presents. A calendar is not needed to know April has arrived. The appearance of native columbine on the red shale cliffs along the South Branch of the Raritan are as dependable a sign as any numeric score card. There is security in predictability and despite changing weather patterns, columbine remains faithful to April. Native columbine is a delicate long stem, dark red, inverted, single bloom, composed of four or five individual vase-shaped tubes, which collectively terminate in the appearance of a crown where the inverted flower meets the stem. Each tube within the red flower is lined with bright yellow. A distinctive broad, three lobed, pale green leaf adorns each stem and easily catches a breeze to help disperse seeds when the plant matures in early May. Columbine does not grow in profusion and is best described as being found in isolated villages, tucked in among the maroon cliffs. I wonder how many Aprils these cliff-dwelling plants have seen, as their existence in such an austere shale environment is not conducive to random dispersal. I think of Brigadoon, a mythical village that appears once every one-hundred years, when native columbine appear during April, on the face of ancient cliffs, otherwise devoid of life. April’s charm and promise find a spokesman in the form of Jack in the pulpit. As the name implies, this early spring plant appears to portray a minister standing in a raised pulpit, leading the congregation in prayer and praise for the gifts of nature. The personification of this unique plant, based on its shape and form, perfectly fit myth, magic, and folk lore promoting a human/ plant interface. The appearance of Jack standing in a pulpit, could be perceived as a reincarnation or memorial to a revered patriarch. Any natural phenomenon begs for an explanation, and in this way, April delivers a lesson in the most critical of survival tools, creativity, and imagination. The earliest flowers to appear under April’s umbrella are a sign of hope as they stand in sharp contrast to the stark landscape about to awaken. Consider that flowers are living things that in some magical way, recruited man to further their propagation in exchange for a glimpse of eternal beauty, dreams and imagination. All combined to expand the universe of human potential with unbounded creativity and expression. April has opened the gift of spring March delivered, and has swept its fresh green carpet clean of any wintry remnants tracked in when the gift was delivered. Conscious of its fleeting time allotted, April honors the delivery of the next month’s explosion of blooms by taming the weather and warming the soil. When May flowers arrive, April deserves a special thanks. Contact [email protected]. See more articles and photos at winterbearrising.wordpress.com. There is magic in the first wildflowers which dare to dance in April’s cool breeze. Look closely at the pinstriped Spring Beauty to see the face of an impish sprite staring back. Pinwheels are used as a symbol because they evoke childlike notions exemplifying the happy, healthy and safe childhoods all children deserve. Five years ago, April 2019: The Branchburg Community Garden marked its 10th anniversary as 25 plot renters got together to put in a good day of work on April 13. 10 years ago, April 2014: At its April 29 meeting, the Branchburg Board of Education approved full-day kindergarten to begin in the fall. 20 years ago, April 2004: The Recreation Department held a public hearing about its recreation master plan. Discussed were such things as a bike-hike trail system, a municipal swimming complex and a senior activities center. What time is it when you get on a trampoline? SPRING time! It’s that time of year when monkeys start falling from the sky. Yep, during those APE-ril showers! As spring arrives, the earth’s rotation will shift slightly. That’s because 80% of the world’s beer supply is converging in Florida for Spring Break. Can February March? No, but April May… God is talking to one of his angels. He says, “Wow, I just created a 24-hour period of alternating light and darkness on Earth.” The angel asks, “What are you going to do now?” God says, “Call it a day!” What did the rabbit say to the carrot? It’s been nice gnawing you! What do you call a rabbit that plays with foxes? A dumb bunny. PART TIME ins coordinator for small healthcare office 1-2 days per mo. Exp preferred. Call 908-253-8887.
