(https://balloonfestival.com/) Festival of Ballooning July 28-30 By David Livingston, Three Bridges Elementary School Bioswale Restoration Committee Member The bioswale restoration project at Three Bridges Elementary School was initiated in August 2021 by Dr. Kristen Higgins, Principal of Three Bridges Elementary School, and David Livingston, Readington Township resident and former president of the Readington Township Board of Education. In 2021, Livingston completed a 200-hour Rutgers Cooperative Extension Service Environmental Steward Intern program, which required him to plan and execute an environmental impact project for certification. He approached Dr. Higgins asking her to partner with him to create a rain garden at the school site. However, Dr. Higgins asked him to “think big,” and the bioswale restoration project was born. A large detention basin (drainage ditch) at the rear of the school property created in 2004 was chosen to be developed into a “rain saver garden” with the purpose of cleansing all water drained into the basin from the school parking lots, roofs, and pavements. That water contains pollutants (fertilizers, animal waste, chemicals, oil) that go untreated into the South Branch of the Raritan River system. To accomplish the task, they recruited a committee composed of the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jonathan Hart, Business Administrator, Jason Bohm, Facilities Manager, Don Race, Township Environmental Commission members Steve Foster and Marlene Orlandi, and two former Readington Township Public School students Tatiana Hlinka, Malcom Williams Jr. along with Dr. Higgins and Livingston. The committee contracted with the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Services to engineer the project. Rain Saver Garden Grows Their plan budgeted $20,000 for all expenses. Committee members (Dr. Higgins, Steve Foster, and Jason Bohm wrote and received grants totaling $19,000; all committee members contributed personal funds totaling Committee Members: David Livingston, Dr. Kristen Higgins, Marlene Orlandi, and Steven Foster with students Junior Abdulai and Jackson Hendry. Coli impacts on the South Branch of the Rockaway Creek in Readington. The commission was one of five recipients of the company’s 2023 Environmental Grant Program, which awarded over $40,000 to five organizations and community groups within its service areas engaged in sustainability projects to improve water source or watershed protection. The Readington Township Environmental Commission will be responsible for collecting the water samples and delivering them to the laboratory, as well as record keeping. The goal of the project is to determine if the source of the E. Coli is due to malfunctioning septic systems or Bovine excretions. The project will help ensure that the South Branch of the Rockaway Creek water is free of unacceptable levels of E. Coli contamination, aside from ensuring the health and safety of recreational activities. Danielle Kearsley, environmental program lead at New Jersey American Water, emphasizes the vital connection between clean water and the environment, stating: “We understand that clean water is not only essential for people, but also crucial for the wellbeing of our environment. That’s why we take great pride in providing the funds needed to support these innovative projects. Through investments in the restoration and protection of our watersheds, we actively contribute to the preservation of our precious water sources and the thriving ecosystems they support, helping to ensure their sustainability for generations to come.” The Hunterdon Central Regional High School Class of 2023 Commencement Ceremony was held on June 22 at the high school. The project was fully funded ($22,500) without using any taxpayer dollars. Work commenced in late summer of 2022; the basin was cleared of all growth, 2000 native plants (grasses, coneflowers, phlox, wild sunflower,) and other perennials were planted. First, second and third graders planted 210 additional native plants this fall and spring. After more than 10 committee meetings from 2021 to the present, the project achieved its goals and native plants and grasses are turning a drainage ditch into a wildlife meadow that provides food and shelter for birds and pollinator insects such as honeybees and butterflies. Grasses send roots deep into the soil and cleanse and detain runoff water; porosity of the basin is improved because the roots of the native plants allow more water to reach the aquifer rather than the South Branch of the Raritan River. Students may now experience onsite instruction directly related to the district approved sustainability curricula. A vimeo was created by two former Readington Township students (Tatiana and Malcolm) with guidance from committee member Marlene Orlandi.
