In a recent press release, the group said it “made the extremely difficult decision to place it on a one-year hiatus in order to reimagine, refresh and relaunch the next version of this great festival in 2025.” Longtime Festival Executive Producer Howard Freeman, whose company has produced the annual three-day July festival the past 30 years, said, “Since we purchased the event back in late fall of 1992, we have been proud to offer a firstclass, family-oriented festival at reasonable prices. However, coming out of the 2020 pandemic, we have seen an exponential increase in operational costs. Inflation, supply chain interruptions, vendors who went out of business during the pandemic, competition for scarce resources from festivals worldwide, along with drastically increased fees set by musical talent, make it extremely difficult to present a quality event in its current form without passing rising costs onto our guests. In order to properly address these challenges, we have made the difficult decision to take a one-year hiatus to reimagine and relaunch the festival in 2025.” Beloved Balloonfest Put on Pause Jersey Jen Keeps On Winning Branchburg’s Jennifer Orecchio Shimsky aka “Jersey Jen” is on a winning streak in the Strongman competition world. Since turning 50 last May, the mother of three has been winning in her women’s masters heavyweight class, lifting Atlas stones, flipping tires, keg carrying, and crushing other feats of strength. Jen competed at the 2023 USS PWW (U.S. Strongman Pro Women’s Worlds) along with 17 women Oct. 21 in Arizona and took top honors. She said she “had a blast, stayed in one piece and podium finished.” “Lifting heavy things, seeing old friends, and making new ones are the reasons why I continue in the sport I fell in love with 12 years ago,” Jen said. She started her fitness quest with Tara’s Bootcamp, directed by local marathoner Tara Zimliki. “I ran some half marathons,” she said of her early experience, “But then I discovered Strongman events. That’s what I love.” Many of the contests raise funds for charity, which also appeals to Jen. She plans to compete in a Lift for Autism in April in Eatontown. Locally, Jen trains at Lifetime in Bridgewater with weekly training regimens designed by her coach in New York. She has been doing four or five contests a year since age 39. Recent competitions have been at Showboat in Atlantic City and Nationals in Dallas, TX, in June where she won the Women’s Masters 50-Plus Heavyweight division. Next up is a show near White Plains, NY, at the end of the month where Jen has a chance to set records for Atlas stone, log press, and axle press. Branchburg Rotarians, Rotaract students from RVCC and Interact students from Somerville High School collected food in front of Branchburg ShopRite on Dec. 9, and made a significant impact on local hunger relief efforts. After six hours, the volunteers collected an impressive ton of nonperishable food items for the Backpack Program of the Somerset County Food Bank. In addition, about 500 healthy snacks were provided to the Branchburg School District for local need. The generosity extended beyond just goods, as cash donations poured in to support HOME of Somerset County. – Submitted by Kathy Feigley Branchburg Rotary Aids Food Bank Pictured are Rotarians Joe Horner (Santa), Cathy Callahan, and Kip Bateman.

Submitted by North Branch Volunteer Fire Company The North Branch Volunteer Fire Company recently held elections for the 2024 leadership positions. The result is an extremely well-seasoned leadership group. These officers, pictured from left to right in order of how their names appear in this article, have the fire department and Township of Branchburg positioned for another safe and successful year. For a fifth consecutive year, Dan Russoniello returns as Chief of the Department. He is once again supported by Deputy Chief Zois Pournaras, Captain Keith Schroeder, and First Lieutenant Mark O’Dell. Stephen Lombardo was elected to the position of Second Lieutenant for the first time after building a reputation of an extremely dependable interior firefighter. Chief Russoniello’s team is responsible for all fireground related activities, maintaining equipment and apparatus, and conducting training and drills for all members. Tom McCartney was elected as President for the fifth year in a row. Vice President Leigh Taylor, Secretary Stephen Lombardo, and Treasurer Chris Zownir return to support him on the executive side of the department. This group is responsible for membership and business operations– including budgeting, fundraising, recruitment, and retention. Company Trustees for 2024 are Doug King Jr., John Corbo, and Connor Mallon. This group meets with the President and Chief monthly to review all expenditures, discuss upcoming needs, and establish a vision for the future of the department. The 100% volunteer fire company is composed of about 50 of your neighbors. In 2023, the department responded to just under 500 calls ranging from general alarm activations to structure fires, vehicle extrications, and swiftwater rescue operations. The department is reliant on the residents it serves and is indebted for the generosity it receives. North Branch Fire Co. Names 2024 Officers North Branch Volunteer Fire Company Leaders

We collected numerous toys, a variety of clothing, monetary gifts and various gift cards. As always, we were able to achieve our goals due to the outpouring of donations from our generous Branchburg residents and as well as the work of our volunteers. This year we had a total number of 24 families with children to participate in our program. The gifts and gift cards were divided among 37 children. We offer our sincere thanks to many throughout our town and beyond. Thank you to Tamiko Hubbard of Sweet Reads, who provided over 100 books to divide among the children; Branchburg Cookie Ladies for supplying prepackaged sweet treats and gift cards; Branchburg Rotary which supplied each new child in the program with a coat, a hat and a pair of gloves; Branchburg Woman’s Club for prepackaged cookies for each family. Beautiful handmade gift tags were made by Giovanna Spagnolo and Lauren Westermann that were distributed among the families. Denise Bayles from Bayles Family Speech Center was a collection site on behalf of NJSHA (Speech-Language-Hearing Association) “Ryan’s Toy Round Up,” a program where Denise chooses where she would like the gifts to go. Denise chose the PTO Holiday Happiness for this year. Thank you to Daniel Button, who works for the non-profit S.H.I.P., (Samaritan Homeless Interim Program) where he selected items to be donated such as socks, hats, gloves, and clothing. Many thanks to the outstanding Branchburg Township School Staff, as well as our many Branchburg residents for the new gift donations along with the extremely generous variety of gift cards. Special thanks to delivery volunteers and Heidi Davis, chair. Heidi and her family store and sort donations in their home, and serve as the hub station for the program. Bayer My story started out visiting the Branchburg Township offices recently. My neighbor could not fill out her 2020 ANCHOR form. So being a good neighbor, I said, “Let me take you down to the Municipal Building.” When arriving some employees offered the form but no assistance. So I said to myself, “They can see that we are very old senior citizens who need a little help.” Then I met two lovely ladies, Diane Schubach and Mindy D Amico, who work in the tax office. They helped us fill out the paper form, and they made our day because of their kindness. I just wanted the citizens to know there are very good people in Branchburg Township who care. The members of 185-G have learned many valuable lessons over the past year, as scouts and as friends. Troop 185-G has created many opportunities for the girls to make new friends and grow as individuals. Congratulations to members of Troop 185 and Troop 185-G especially. The past year has been filled with amazing experiences, and we look forward to many more. Both 185-G and 185-B are scouting for new members to welcome. One Year Ago, Jan. 2023 – The Branchburg Township Commitee selected David Owens to be Mayor, and Anna Columbus to be Deputy Mayor at the Jan. 4 reorganization meeting at the Municipal Building. Also sworn in to serve on the Township Committee for 2023 were Thomas Young, James Schworn and Brendon Beatrice. Five Years Ago, Jan. 2019 – Archaeological research continued along Old York Road above the confluence of the Raritan River branches. Funded by a federal grant, researchers used ground-penetrating radar to “look” under the ground for evidence of artifacts related to a skirmish between Patriots and British sympathizers during the American Revolution. 10 Years Ago, Jan. 2014 – It was a shock to many when retired conservative talk radio legend Bob Grant died on Dec. 31 and had his viewing and prayer service in early January at the Branchburg Funeral Home on Route 202. Part of Grant’s family lived in Bridgewater, and he lived his final days at a facility in Hillsborough to be closer to his family. 20 Years Ago, Jan. 2004 – Anthony Boffa created a group for Branchburg citizens to discuss Somerville High School issues. At the time, the Branchburg School Board and State Assemblyman Kip Bateman were working to restore Branchburg’s six votes on the Somerville School Board. This Month In Branchburg History

Sleepy eyes involuntarily shut to set the stage for transient dreams to vie for recollection in morning’s foggy consciousness, as a mid-winter storm promised a night of undecided precipitation. The view through the frosted bedroom window at dawn revealed the storm’s final decision in the form of powdery snow, preserved by an overcast sky and sub-freezing temperature. First light of dawn appeared as a proxy of the sun who farmed out deIcing on the Gunnels livery of a mere fragment of daylight intended to last the day. A long spell of cold had locked the river in ice and curtailed any thought of canoeing. A heavy rain followed to raise the water level and break up the ice. The water settled down to a suitable flow, and I was anxious to see the aftermath and capture some wildlife images in between winter’s extreme mood swings. The air was still and not a breeze stirred, a sure sign of snow to come. The conditions were perfect, as light snow was expected about halfway through the trip, and it would add mood to any landscape or wildlife images. Wildlife tends to feel more secure and reluctant to move in subfreezing temperatures, allowing a close approach. The camera lens is less likely to get blurred in the absence of windblown precipitation. If a stiff breeze was predicted, I would never launch my canoe. Wind is the rate limiting step for my winter sojourns, along with safe water levels. Safety is critical and is weighed against any cold weather canoe trip. I placed the boat in the quiet water along the shore, just inside the edge of the current. I carefully settled into the center seat, holding the carbon fiber paddle across my lap. Out of habit, I always wait a moment after engaging with the current to feel the enthusiasm of the river’s energy to partner with my energy infused paddle strokes. There can be several distinct reasons to make a downriver run on any given day, all dependent on mood, weather, and water flow. The intent of this winter paddle was to see what nature is doing when she thinks no one is watching. Digital evidence is nice to have, but not as essential as just being present to experience what cannot otherwise be seen and felt in tamer conditions. The current is my guide, as my hull is directed to follow its winding course worn into the hard shale riverbed, especially critical at lower water levels. I generally use a hit and switch style of paddling where the boat is kept on course by alternate strokes instead of turning the paddle blade at the end of the stroke, which is grossly inefficient, as it slows hull speed. Though, any paddle stroke in the nick of time is the correct choice. As I switched sides after each seContinued on Page 11

Fine drops quickly freeze and after layers of ice accumulate, its collective weight and height above the water, moved the center of gravity forward to make the hull plow left or right with each stroke and reduce stability. An occasional pause was required to clear the gunnels of ice, using the paddle’s sharp edge to shatter the ice. Clearing the ice was not an existential crisis and at times I would use a north woods style paddle stroke in deep water, where all paddling is done on a chosen side, never lifting the paddle from the water. This is a useful stroke when drifting up on unaware wildlife as paddling motion is restricted to the offside and the stroke, completely silent. As I neared home pasture, a light but steady snow began to fall straight down. This was the time to allow the river’s energy to take control one last time, set aside my physical presence and exist for a meditative moment in conscious stillness – a brief side trip, compliments of the water’s endless energy. The carry from the river through the pasture to home had its own reward. I have a pair of pile lined, heavy wool mittens stowed in a zip lock bag, reserved just for this occasion. I rarely wear gloves when paddling in cold weather, though when I take out, stow my pack and paddles, lift the hull on my shoulders, my hands get wet and cold from the water collected in the hull. It is an anticipated treat to wear those mittens on the portage home. As I slipped on the mittens, I noticed a single flake of snow caught on an errant strand of wool, its unique structure designed as if by intelligent hand. This was the essence of a mid-winter canoe trip, ephemeral moments in nature, stored in memory for instant retrieval, to be enjoyed and shared. It was just the icing on the gunnels.
