While there was no giant community tent this year, the fair was festive nonetheless with kiddie rides, live music, vendors, and food. Fireworks ended the event at 8 p.m. One man’s trash is a bear’s treasure… or at least his next meal! This big fella was photographed near North Branch Village last month. The photographer, who wishes to remain anonymous, now comes up with dozens of excuses when it comes time to take out the trash. Kiddie rides were a new attraction. Vendors and community groups provided their own tents and tables, with a few pop-ups taking flight with the wind gusts. The New Jersey State Police Homeland Security helicopter drew a crowd when it landed on the soccer fields around 2 p.m. The Branchburg Womans Club held a basket raffle and collected items for the food bank. From left are Regina Lembrich, Sue Anczarki, Nancy Shamberger, Linda Mish, and Kathy Harris. Plenty of well-behaved pups were in attendance. Teacher John Gottshalk to Give Branchburg History Talk Roger Johnson Branchburg Community Garden Advisory Committee The Branchburg Community Garden has concluded its 14th gardening season. Gardeners enjoyed a bountiful harvest of produce such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and flowers which were grown in the 80 garden plots rented by our gardeners. Over the years, the garden has provided opportunities for gardeners to grow produce and flowers, socialize and also give back to the community. This year the garden donated over 1000 pounds of produce and nonperishable items to the Raritan Food Pantry. There’s a little something for everyone in the garden. There are organic and nonorganic plots and raised beds for folks who may find a ground level plot more challenging. Parents and grandparents have used a plot as a learning experience for their children and grandchildren. Elly May Tom and Leonard Grand, Leo and Grace “The Friendly Store of Value” Tara Murphy Nathan Rudy James Schworn Three Candidates Seek Township Committee Seat Branchburg Township voters will elect one Township Committee member to a three-year term in the Nov. 7 General Election. Three are vying for the spot. The Branchburg News requested the following info and 80-word candidate statements to assist voters in electing the candidate that best represents them. Responses are listed alphabetically. Tara Murphy, Libertarian 1. What is your occupation? Parent, wife, daughter, friend, neighbor, disabilities advocate and financial tech analyst. 2. How long have you lived in Branchburg? 14 years 3. If you are an incumbent, how many years have you served on the board? N/A 4. What is your candidate statement, that is, why should residents vote for you? Branchburg’s problems are rooted in 40 years of single-party rule. Why are 5 committee members getting paid while school board members volunteer? One committeeman even has full family health insurance at a highly subsidized cost. I support term limits, tax rebates for seniors, ending PILOT and respecting the concerns of residents over businesses. Look beyond the big parties, think local and choose Tara Murphy for township committee. I will always be on the side of people. (www. freedomforbranchburg.com) Nathan Rudy, Democrat 1. What is your occupation? I am the Public Information Director for Somerset County. 2. How long have you lived in Branchburg? My wife, daughter, and three rescue dogs have lived in the Neshanic Station Historic District of Branchburg for four years. 3. If you are an incumbent, how many years have you served? N/A 4. What is your candidate statement, that is, why should residents vote for you? The current Township Committee has been reactive – their own word – in response to development for decades, and now their answer is to give millions of dollars to developers to buy vacant lots. They don’t even know how to pay for the $28 million they just spent, but plan to charge the average homeowner $350 in annual taxes. I have extensive development and planning experience, and will bring a new voice and ideas to create a positive future for Branchburg. (Website: https:// branchburgdemocrats.org; Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ BranchburgDemocrats; X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/BranchburgDemo2) James G. Schworn, Republican 1. What is your occupation? I retired from NJ Transit in 2018 after 30 years serving as Chief Procurement Officer and Deputy Chief of Light Rail Operations. I am currently Senior Operations Manager for Kinkisharyo International, LLC. 2. How long have you lived in Branchburg? My family has lived in Branchburg since 2003. 3. If you are an incumbent, how many years have you served? I have had the honor to serve the residents of Branchburg since 2012. 4. What is your candidate statement, that is, why should residents vote for you? I am an experienced official with a proven record of responsibly and successfully representing our residents. During my tenure, Branchburg maintained a 99% tax recovery rate, AAA bond rating, and a budget surplus. We prioritize protecting open space and preserving historic properties. We maintain dedicated funding for infrastructure maintenance and in support of our volunteer emergency services. Residential tax increases remain well below County and State averages. It is indisputable that our town is safe, solvent and exceptionally well managed.

The new housing (completed and anticipated), brings with Charles Tuma Voters Will Elect Three to Board of Education it increasing student enrollment for the first time in recent memory. This presents challenges which the district has not faced in many years. Larger enrollments, demographic changes, behavior issues, increasing special needs costs, possible financial constraints and can Somerville High School absorb our new students and theirs? These important issues will need to be addressed by a relatively new administration and the BOE. Now, more than ever, Experience Matters! Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Locally, voters will elect one Branchburg Township Committee member and three Board of Education members. Township Committee candidates are incumbent Republican James G. Schworn, Democrat Nathan Rudy, and Libertarian Tara Murphy. Uncontested candidates for the Board of Education are Robert Maider, Charles Tuma, and Vincent Carpentier. (See articles on pages 4 and 5.) Running for State Senate are Democrat Andrew Zwicker, Republican Michael Pappas, and Libertarian Richard J. Byrne. The “Night of the Roses” also honors the memory of Meghan Rose Bradley who lost her battle with pediatric brain cancer on Oct. 1, 2004, just 38 days after her diagnosis. This tragedy inspired her parents, Bob and Ileen, to devote their lives to achieving the goal of eliminating this dreadful disease. Since its formation in 2005, the MRB Foundation has raised $625,000 to fund research projects specifically focused on pediatric brain cancer patients. Dr. Amir Sheikhi, affiliated with Penn State University, is completing the second year of foundation-funded research into a gel that targets cancer cells. Dr. Winson Ho, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at University of California at San Francisco, is the newest grant recipient from the foundation. His lab is focusing on non-surgical treatments for medulloblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumor in children. Events such as the “Night of the Roses” demonstrate that community involvement, awareness, and compassion can translate into real world success. Branchburg Middle School and Somerville High School continue to celebrate Meghan’s life with fundraisers that increase awareness. Local students are also eligible to receive scholarships in Meghan’s name. The next event is Ladies Night Out set for Feb. 29, 2024. 12 The Branchburg News • November 2023 By Devin Conner Have you ever taken a kayak down class III rapids tightly gripping your paddle and hoping the white water doesn’t flip you out of your boat? For six Boys Scouts and three adult leaders from Branchburg’s Troop 90, that is how they spent the first week of July on the New River in West Virginia. Summit Bechtel Reserve is one of four high adventure experiences where Boy Scouts from across the country get to experience unique outdoor activities that test their skill and nerve. After an eighthour van drive, the Scouts from Troop 90 met up with members of Troop 439 from Phoenix, AZ, and Troop 4011 from Jackson, MO, at the 14,000-acre reserve to prepare for the kayaking and rafting trip known as the New River Experience. In total, there were close to 40 Boy Scouts and adult leaders along with 5 river guides that took part in the week-long excursion. After spending the first night in canvas tents at the Summit Bechtel base camp area, each Scout was given a dry-bag duffel for all their belongings, an inflatable kayak (known as a “duckie”), a personal flotation device (PFD), a helmet, and a paddle. Over the next fourdays the Scouts navigated through rapids down the Upper New River. Averaging 10-15 miles per day, the Scouts enjoyed the challenge of the white water along with the large open “pool” areas of the river where they could float, have water fights, and build duckie towers with their boats. Every evening, the Boy Scouts would put out at a new campground where they were responsible for setting up their tents and preparing dinner for their crew. On the morning of the 5th day, the Scouts were able to trade in their duckies for a larger raft to take them down the Lower New River. In this section, the Boy Scouts were divided into teams of 8-10 with one guide per raft, and they now had to navigate through trickier Class IV and V rapids. They knew they had finally completed their journey when they finished underneath the New River Gorge Bridge, standing at a height of 876’, towering over everything in sight. Once they cleaned and turned in all of their rafting gear, a bus took them back to the Summit Bechtel base camp for a much needed shower and change of clothes. Before getting in the van to head back to New Jersey though, the Scouts were able to put their fear of heights to the test as well by traveling down the high adventure camp’s zip line, Big Zip. For most of the Scouts, the rapids were the best part, along with constantly trying to toss each other out of their boats and capsizing them. The last Class III on the Upper New River, called Surprise, was especially memorable. It started off as a normal rapid, but ended with two massive waves that flipped over half of the group out of their duckies. The entire week was one that everyone will remember for years to come. Lots of jokes and laughs were shared, new friends from other Troops were made, adventure skills were gained, and fears were conquered. Members of Boy Scout Troop 90 at Summit Bechtel Reserve New River Experience (from left) are: Victor Haddad, Scott Conner, Rob Ott, Joseph Keck, Aidan Haddad, Liam Ott, Devin Conner, Brian Armstrong, and Dylan Nyakanga. Within minutes the glow was extinguished as the rising sun surrendered the day to the leaden November sky. Temperatures remained in the mid-thirties throughout the day as November took in a deep breath, held it for a long moment, and exhaled a flurry of snow. My view across the flooded marsh was now obscured, as if looking through a white gauze curtain. The fading daylight and falling snow blurred the detail, leaving the tall white trunks of dead trees and a dome shaped muskrat house, powdered with a light cap of snow, to stand out against a background of black water and a heavily wooded shoreline. The weathered white trunks of the standing dead trees and stumps provided perspective as the pall of darkness fell. A light wind directed the angle of the snowflakes to contrast with the perfectly vertical dead trees. Above the whisper of the hissing snow, the creaking sound of wings betrayed an invisible flock of black ducks, coming in silent, to roost on the quiet pond. The whooshing sound of each bird skidding to a stop on the dark water was immediately followed by low chatter and then silence. The snow was still falling in the early morning and lightly dusted each duck’s back, though the accumulation on the ground was barely an inch deep. November is full of bluster but leaves the hard ice and snow to December. The transitional weather of November teases of the cold and ice to come in December and stands in stark contrast to the pleasant weather and color of October. Autumn expresses three distinct personalities, offered as a three-season sampler in one main entree. Type cast as the time of leaf fall, and wild color, few associate autumn with cold, leafless November and the greater part of icy and frigid December. The same pond under autumn’s spell can hardly be differentiated from summer. The greenery dominates the shoreline and water plants grow in profusion. Painted turtles bask in the sun on partially submerged fallen timber and stumps, while the swirl of a bluegill disturbs the water’s surface as it inhales an errant insect. The muskrat house derives its heat from decaying vegetation as well as the sun and is especially attractive to a painted water snake. A close look at the tree line reveals a small patch of crimson poison ivy, so obscure as to be ignored, though a sure sign of the changing season. An immature male humming bird takes energy from a patch of yellow, cornucopia shaped, jewelweed flowers, before he joins the migration south. A whitetail buck, still in velvet, browses the shoreline greenery to supplement his fill of fallen acorns. The dark brown cattail heads are beginning to disintegrate, as their beige fluff is exposed and dispersed by the wind. Green-winged teal, mallards, and black duck feed upon the underwater vegetation as they begin a limited migration south. As winter nears, the first full week of December delivers a hard freeze and consistent sub-freezing temperatures. Still autumn, the arrival of December brings the first harsh winter weather with no hope of retreat. The pond is now frozen thick enough to walk across after a week of sub-freezing cold. A crust of snow covers all flat surfaces and tops the dead timber with dome shaped white caps. Where the ice freezes clear, lines of air bubbles trapped under the ice, betray the path of muskrats travelling from their mud and grass houses to feeding grounds and bank dens. Whitetail bucks, antlers free of velvet, search out grape vine, honeysuckle, dewberry, and blackberry leaves. No sign of waterfowl as they migrated south or moved regionally to find open water. Cattails are shredded ghosts, some bent over, others standing tall, all cemented in place by thick ice. Their fronds and stalks serve as cover for roosting songbirds. To unwrap autumn’s seasonal sampler is to enjoy the variety of distinct flavors contained within one fall serving. Autumn is a guide who accompanies life on earth from the moment darkness overtakes the light, through the darkest days, and departs only when the birth of new light is delivered at the winter solstice. Autumn’s Entrée Offers Variety November sentinels stand boldly against the open sky, leaf bare and ready to meet the cold wind and snow of December. Contact jjmish57@msn. com. Branchburg CORN This Month In Branchburg History One year ago, Nov. 2022: The 7U Branchburg Bulldogs Travel Baseball Team was named Central Division League Champions for the fall season after a convincing 8-2 victory over Bridgewater on Nov. 5, in the championship game. The Bulldogs were 11-1 for the season. Five years ago, Nov. 2018: In the Nov. 6 General Election, Branchburg voters mostly went for the incumbent candidates. For Township Committee, for example, Republicans Anna Columbus and Brendon Beatrice were victorious. In the race for US Representive, incumbent Republican Leonard Lance earned 3,271 Branchburg votes to Democratic challenger Tom Malinowski’s 2,637. Malinowski did win districtwide, however. Ten years ago, Nov. 2013: Back when supermarkets still gave out plastic bags for groceries, the boys from Branchburg Cub Scout Pack 185 would put the bags to use every November in a “Scouting for Food” project, collecting food donations from residents all over town for the Food Bank Network of Somerset County. 20 years ago, Nov. 2003: Branchburg school students experienced a first on Nov. 14 – a wind day. At the crack of dawn, class mothers started the phone chain to let everyone know that school was cancelled due to wind and its resulting power failures. It all started the day before when a major wind storm led to an overloaded transformer at Whiton School. Meanwhile, power also was lost at Old York and Central Middle Schools. The only school spared was Stony Brook. Dr. John Hrevnack, Interim Superintendent, made the decision to call school off, and planned to add a make-up day in June. 50 years ago, Nov. 1973: In the 1970s, the state discussed plans for the Raritan Confluence Reservoir, which would provide new water sources and recreational opportunities, but would submerge parts of Branchburg, Hillsborough, Bridgewater and some other towns. The plans were eventually shelved due to acquisition costs . PROTECT YOUR LIFE, BUSINESS & ASSETS Get the Insurance Coverage you Need at the best rate with a reputed insurance company.
