By Colleen Repoli Whiton Elementary School On Friday, May 17, Whiton Elementary School hosted its annual Author’s Day for the entire thirdgrade class. “This is truly a unique experience for our students,” explained teacher Miss Cristina Pernini, as our school is able to host three authors/illustrators in one day. Joining us were Alan Katz from Connecticut, Ralph Masiello from Massachusetts, and Amulya Veldanda Vadali from New Jersey. Throughout the day, students enjoyed an hour-long presentation with each author/illustrator, were able to ask questions, learn how to draw pictures and characters, and dive deeper into the writing process. Although this event was organized by Miss Pernini and Ms. Colleen Repoli, it would not have been possible without the support of the Branchburg Township Education Association (BTEA) and the NJEA, as well as the Branchburg Education Foundation (BEF). These grants provided the expenses for all three authors, books for the students to take home, and breakfast and lunch for the authors and third-grade staff. The excitement on the students’ faces was priceless when they heard all about the writing process and how long it takes these authors to publish books.

First “Flags for Heroes” a Success Have you seen us paddling down the North Branch or the South Branch of the Raritan River? Have you seen a group of canoes and kayaks enjoying any of our other local waterways? We are the Mohawk Canoe Club, one of the oldest paddle clubs in the USA. The club formed in Trenton in 1903 and has been active now for 121 years. In the beginning and until 1968 the members were all male. In 1968 the club opened membership to everyone. Families came with their children and these children passed on the fun to their kids. When one paddles with a group good things can happen. With the group you may expand your skills safely with encouragement from more experienced paddlers. Then there are the “shuttles.” How do I get my boat and myself back to the “put-in” spot? No worries here. The trip leader has arranged for all boats and paddlers to have transportation. I see canoes and kayaks on racks in backyards just longing to get out and play. We welcome all would-be paddlers of any age to join us in the spirit of our motto of “Good Fellowship.” So if you Join the 100-Plus-Year-Old Mohawk Canoe Club are looking for people and places to paddle this summer, consider learning what we offer. 6 The Branchburg News • July/Aug. 2024 What is happening at Solberg Airport? Solberg Airport is engaged in a process that will lead to airport expansion similar to Morristown Airport. How could this happen? With final NJDOT approval the 740-acre airport becomes eligible for 10’s of millions of federal dollars for construction through the State’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP). Why is airport expansion a concern? An expansion creating an “Advanced Service” airport, accommodating mid-size jet traffic, will lower our property values and degrade our quality of life. What can citizens do to stop an expansion? • The NJDOT needs to hear from you. Make them aware of local opposition early in this process. • Appeal to elected officials for assistance. • Stay informed. Visit the website below. • Spread the word. • Join BRAAC. Lunch Bunch, Dinner Bunch and Game Time are still meeting thanks to their chairs: Barbara Dugan, Linda Mish and Barbara Melitski. Thank you ladies! In June, the Girl’s Career Institute was held again at Rutgers University. The New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs began the Institute and BWC again sponsored a participant. These 148 high school juniors learned about several possible career paths from women currently working in those areas. The girls had a busy three and one-half days. In addition to the career speakers, the girls were divided into small groups where they were presented several challenges: perform a service project, create a vision board, plan and perform a skit, and form a chorus and perform a program. In between they experienced college life, living in the dorms and using Rutgers’ recreation facilities. All in all, it was a busy, meaningful event. Four of our members participated in the “Branchburg Library 43 years of Volunteers” celebration on May 30. Our little library on Olive Street in Neshanic Station is part of the Somerset County Library System. One of our club members was instrumental in the library’s formation 43 years ago. The club then adopted the library as a Community Improvement Project working with DPW to paint the walls and ready the library for occupancy. Today you can enjoy all library services including the weekly Storytime for children and be proud that it is all volunteer run. If you think you might be interested in joining a group of women that began the Girls Career Institute and the Branchburg Library please call 908-866-1938 or email us at [email protected]. BWC Aids Girl’s Career Institute, Library Celebration By Joan Hanley Current volunteers of the Branchburg Library on Olive Street in Neshanic Station celebrated the 43rd anniversary of its existence at a dessert - iced tea party on May 30. Many former volunteers and members of the Branchburg Woman’s Club attended to share anecdotal accounts of the early days. Several exhibits included hand-drawn original plans for the designs of the desk, the tall bookcases and small bins accessible for our little readers. Photos documenting hard-working builders, painters, crafters and readers at work guided by Mary Kay Muckenhoupt filled story boards. Branchburg Mayor Anna Columbus congratulated all who attended, singling out the ability of the volunteers to carry on “this 43 Years of Service Honored at Branchburg Library valuable gem” in Neshanic Station. We have chosen to commemorate all who volunteer with a plaque that honors their service. It will be affixed to the left of the library door. We have also planted a “crazberry” (color combination of cranberry and raspberry) butterfly bush to the right of the entrance, Please do stop by, and please volunteer.

A lifetime of near-death experiences with large animals provided me the creds to engage in a slashing knife fight, in knee deep water, with an angry beaver wearing a 220 conibear body grip trap on its left front leg. Close encounters with animals who were motivated to do me harm, seemed a natural course of events. My first real job involved handling and evaluating more than a thousand lab rats on long-term studies, each week. Most rats were compliant, there were killer rats among the cage banks who would defy any attempt at being held. On a few occasions I had to quickly withdraw my hand with a hefty rat attached firmly to my finger tip. Finally, I left the rat race for the jungle where I managed the veterinary clinic. One of my first days on the job, I was given a short course in throwing a lariat and charged with roping a caribou. The veterinarian, wildlife manager and I entered the natural boulder strewn enclosure where an injured caribou defied roping attempts. I was lucky enough to get a rope on the reluctant caribou. Now what? Seemed like forever until another two ropes restrained the animal so it could be immobilized, treated and released. It was a male Bactrian camel which introduced me to Tachypsychia, a situation where time and thought evaporate, and everything appears in slow motion and instinct is the only operating condition intact. We had to treat a wound on the large male Bactrian camel in the herd of four. There was no chance to rope the animal on the open range, so the group was herded into an eight-foot high fencedin enclosure set on pavement, about 25 yards square. Once the herd was secured, the other camels were released, leaving the lone two-humped patient, now further stressed by the absence of his herd. The camel was treated with a collard dart used to remotely inject a large dose of antibiotics. Before the camel could be released, I had to remove the dart using a longhandled adjustable noose. The general rule when treating stressed large creatures, was to immediately step out of their personal space to ease tensions. I backed off inside the pen after removing the dart, to give the camel an obvious exit. To everyone’s surprise, especially mine, the camel turned and came charging in my direction. I ran in a straight line directly away and saw the camel coming at full speed. I turned on the afterburners and realized I had run out of room and had to make a sharp left turn. I slipped and fell on the wet pavement, now on my hands and knees, with the camel coming like a freight train, a millisecond behind. I scrambled to my feet and ran in whatever direction I was pointed. The bull camel skidded past my crash site as I reached the opposite fence. Surely the camel would back off and just leave. No luck! My back was against the fence and both hands gripping the chain links as the camel recovered from its skid and charged again like a locomotive. My escape choices were pared down as time evaporated. Instinct demanded I wait until the last second to kick off the fence and fly past the outraged camel. I headed for the gate and stood back as the camel calmed down and walked out of the pen. Middle East medical journals report camel bites often result in tissue and bone loss treated by amputation. A camel’s teeth are arranged like a jaw full of filthy butter knives, and the shoulder is usually where the bite is inflicted. Lucky beaver contemplates its freedom. Huge orange incisors self sharpen and can fell an oak tree. Highly recommend the book “Lily Pond” for insight into the life of this otherwise social creature. All this and more was just another day on the job. Coming face to face with an angry beaver did not seem out of line and was well within my wheelhouse. I observed from a shelf on the cliff, what I thought was a muskrat slowly swimming in a stuttering manner near shore, heading upriver. I waited for it to get closer and saw a large size body-gripping trap on its foreleg. I planned to attempt a rescue, though the animal would probably head to deep water and be lost. I kept taking images as I got a closer look. I set my camera down and decided to walk into the river to move the muskrat toward the shore. A closer look revealed I was dealing with a beaver, its bright orange, oversized incisors flashed as I closed in. The extra large trap made the beaver seem small and was the reason I initially thought it was a muskrat. The trap on its left foreleg hindered the beaver’s escape. The impromptu plan was to jam a heavy branch in the river bottom between the trap and beaver’s mouth. The first few attempts ended in failure as the beaver lashed out at me. A second branch was needed to pin the beaver long enough to release the trap. All this was taking place in knee deep water; advantage beaver. After a few more rounds, I saw my chance to squeeze the trap spring and release the thick wire jaws. The spring would not budge and the beaver was motivated enough to continue the dance. I had it pinned again, and this time my adrenalin kicked in and with one free hand, released the beaver from the trap. The arm was intact and the only injury was some torn skin. I backed out into the river after grabbing my camera, to give the beaver its personal space. The beaver went ashore and rested on the foot high river bank for several minutes. I had enough images and went forward to grab the untagged trap, laying in the water. The beaver suddenly leaped forward into the river and swam directly at me. To my relief, it turned and swam upstream. The beaver was likely an unintended catch. Though this is all speculation. How lucky was that beaver to cross my path on that day at that moment. Made the risk worth it, for me. Never, ever attempt to free a wild animal from a trap. Call the animal rescue organization or state if an unintended catch or trap is left active after the season is closed. Be careful, as interfering with a legal trap is a violation of the law. Each trap must have an ID tag. Most trappers will apply for a coded ID number provided by the state, rather than list name and address on the tag, as previously required. Hunting/trapping regulations in booklet form are provided for free, where licenses are sold. An on-line version is also available. My animal handling curriculum vitae is extensive and varied enough to attempt a rescue, whether it be eagle or beaver. Rule number one; ‘first do no harm’ to yourself or the animal. Branchburg CORN This Month In Branchburg History One year ago, July 2023 – Late July around here was a time of hot air balloons drifting over backyard parties, coming from about 30 years of balloon festivals at Solberg Airport in Readington. With favorable breezes, 2023 turned out to be an especially good year for Branchburg sky watchers, but little did we know it would be the last such event for a while. In mid-December, the New Jersey Festival of Ballooning announced in a statement that there would be no festival in July 2024. The Festival Group would use the hiatus to reimagine, refresh and relaunch the next version of the festival in 2025. “Coming out of the 2020 pandemic, we have seen an exponential increase in operational costs,” the statement explained. “Inflation, supply chain interruptions, vendors who went out of business during the pandemic” are all part of the problem. Five years ago, July 2019 – Multiple meetings during June began to clear up the future of the dilapidated “wooden bridge” on River Road near the train station. Its future would be its replacement. The wooden bridge, about 125 years old, and pre-dating the motor-vehicle revolution, was closed on June 5 after an inspection by New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT). 10 years ago, July 2014 – Storming Robots Technology Learning Center of Branchburg, representing the U.S,, won the World Title in the 2014 RoboCupJunior International Championship held in Joao Pessoa, Brazil. 20 years ago, July 2004 – Final construction of the Neshanic Valley Golf Course was underway after three years of drought and deluge, and was expected to open on Labor Day weekend, about a year later than the original plan.
