March 2024 www.branchburgnews.com Pictured at the Person of the Year Ceremony at the Municipal Building on Feb. 12, from left, are Bernie Rosario, Maria DeSimone, Dana Lauducci, Jason Miessler, Greg Linde, and Tom Decker. The Third Annual Branchburg Township Person of the Year Ceremony was held Feb. 12 at the Municipal Building to honor Branchburg residents who volunteer their time and talents in support of various organizations that have a positive impact on the community. Following are excerpts from the nomination letters members of the community sent to the township Communications Committee in 2023: Dana Lauducci, winner, was described by her nominator as a “font of wisdom, sharing important information and events to the parents of this year’s graduating class as an administrator of the Facebook Page Class of 2023.” Dana’s work as a lactation consultant has helped many parents. Dana has been a volunteer La Leche League Leader since 2011, providing free phone, email, online and in-person breastfeeding support to local families. Dana also serves as VP of the LLL Garden State Council and social media coordinator for LLL USA. Dana served as president of the Somerville High School PTO for four years. She was the Somerville High School marching band uniform coordinator and chaperone for four years. Dana was previously a den leader for Cub Scout Pack 315, committee member for Boy Scout Troop 185 and continues to volunteer as a merit badge counselor. Dana was a religious education teacher for St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church in Bridgewater for 9 years and currently volunteers as a Eucharistic minister. Dana has also been a classical choral singer for Masterwork Chorus for 26 years, performing annually at Carnegie Hall, and currently serves as Masterwork’s president. Greg Linde - Honorable Mention - volunteers on Saturdays with Branchburg In-Town Soccer’s TOPSoccer Special Needs division. “Mr. Linde’s Pancake Breakfasts” have become the hit of the season; and Greg’s time with the soccer players always brings them such joy, his nominator wrote. As Greg has continued to want to provide best in class facilities to the youth of Branchburg, in 2019 he formed the Branchburg Turf Initiative, to help bring awareness to the residents of Branchburg for improved recreation facilities. Greg brought this knowledge to the Parks and Recreation committee and joined the committee the same year – having served until current. Greg spreads the magic and joy every year to Branchburg’s littlest residents as one of the voices of Santa Claus. This small piece of service may be one of the most important, reminding us all that the simplest things sometimes have the biggest impact. He has imparted wisdom beyond years to those around him. His kind spirit, and willingness to jump into any capacity needed are unwavering. Tom Decker - Nominee - is a very influential scoutmaster of Branchburg’s own Troop 185 of Scouts BSA, even long after his own children aged out of the troop. Today, there are 10 scouts, and Mr. Decker continues to teach them important life skills and to help the community through scouting. Maria DeSimone - Nominee - works hard and spends a lot of time to make the Branchburg Country Fair a success each year. She is the driving force for the coordination of vendors, food trucks, entertainment, games, crafts, etc. to make fair day run smoothly. Maria is the Branchburg Honors Person of the Year, Nominees Continued on Page 11 Can You Spell Champion? She passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 30, after a brutal stabbing outside her family’s North Bridge Street home in Somerville. David Shroitman of Somerville is the murder suspect. Aside from both graduating from Somerville High School in 2014, the two reportedly had no relationship. Born on March 25, 1996, Maryrose was raised in Somerville and graduated in 2018 from Rutgers University. She was a Logistics Management Specialist, formerly employed by the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC). She had taken a break from her profession to focus on her life’s mission work as a visual artist, anti-drug activist, entrepreneur. philanthropist, and writer. She was committed to empowering youth and those battling addiction. Founder of the non-profit 4TheYoungerMe (4TYM), she also was involved with the nonprofits Not An Easy Fix and Empower Somerset. In August 2022, Maryrose and her brother Ian were impactful key speakers sharing their stories at a Not An Easy Fix community event. In 2023 they were featured in Not An Easy Fix’s DJ Choices assembly programs in Somerset County schools bringing strong preventative and informative anti-drug messages to over 1,500 students. Fealey gained TikTok fame as she shared her family’s story. In 2021 her efforts to get her brother off drugs and into recovery are shown in a Brut documentary. A follow-up documentary in 2022 found the two dealing with relapse, recovery and advocating for people to live clean, sober lives. Maryrose leaves behind parents Janet Pizzelli and Jim Fealey, her brother Ian and his wife Tiffany Fealey. She is predeceased by her sister Marisa Rose. Funeral services were held on Feb. 7 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Somerville. Donations in her memory may be made to Not An Easy Fix (visit notaneasyfix.org – click on homepage Donation button). 10 The Branchburg News • March 2024 The fluffy white blanket of an early March snowstorm, preserved by the cold days that followed, began to shrink as the sun fought the darkness for dominance. The snow cover was still unbroken as it grudgingly settled lower each passing day. Eventually the white blanket would lose its loft and become threadbare, unveiling the gravid brown earth. The days following the storm dawned clear and cloudless. The night sky was a showcase of brilliant white diamonds, alive with energy as they sparkled in the infinite celestial darkness. An hour before sunrise the west facing snow-covered hillside reflected enough light to reveal the fine detail of the skeletal silhouettes of every tree and bush that stood above the white ground cover. Even as the sky began to brighten, the entire hillside remained in shade, preserving the dramatic pre-dawn contrast. For a few slow minutes, the sky above the hill was bathed in a diffuse aura of gold, The Edge of Winter fading into white, which blended into the palest blue, growing more intense as the brightest stars lingered and were lost among the deepening blue background. For a long moment, night and day, past and present coexisted at one glance. The dynamic scene, frozen on an imaginary vertical tapestry, the black and white hillside held in sharp contrast to the gold and sunlit blue sky above. In a way, that dawn was symbolic of the dichotomy of March, as the month ushers in the last cold breath of winter and departs amid life emerging from dormancy under the influence of increasing daylength. Maroon, orange, green, and red buds decorate the bare tree branches to rival fall color, as early spring flowers tolerate the mercurial weather and defiantly poke through any errant late Match snowfall. Bird migration is now in full swing as flycatchers, osprey, and colorful warblers make their appearance. Great horned owls, hatched a month earlier, are flightless and near adult size. March is the best time to find migrating woodcock and observe the unique mating flights performed by the males at dusk, choreographed to impress a potential mate. Woodcock were common locally in open woods and damp fields. As their habitat dwindles, any sighting becomes a rare treat. When March rolls around I head for a likely spot where a swale is formed by the earlier mentioned hillside. The hillside is drained by a seasonal stream which remains wet where the gradient levels. The saturated soil creates a perfect environment for earthworms, the main food source for migrating woodcock. Woodcock, also known as timberdoodles, will often sit tight and allow a close approach. All migrating birds must deal with unpredictable weather anywhere along their migration path. So, arrival at any one location will vary from year to year. It is somehow comforting when birds that migrate through, show up on schedule. All is right with the world. When snow buntings, headed to points north, stop over at a specific location year after year, a dependence of sort can develop on behalf of the observer. The snowbirds become a reference point, much as a birthday or anniversary. March provides the ‘wind beneath the wings’ of migrating birds as well as sweeps the land and grooms the trees. Wind and March are inseparable. March has earned the reputation as the month of relentless wind as it rushes mercurial weather on and off the stage to stir the breeze. Think about the wind and the scale of expression from hurricanes and tornadoes to a gentle whisper, where the wind uses a dried stem of grass or tree branch to etch its thoughts in the snow or on the side of an old wooden barn. The first day of spring will happen on the nineteenth day of March, 2024, at 11:06 p.m. Day and night reach perfect equilibrium for a split second as winter surrenders to spring. A fox sparrow takes refuge from a late March snowstorm as it migrates north to its breeding grounds. –Contact [email protected]. See more articles and photos at winterbearrising.wordpress.com. This is a free, fun event put on every year. In 2022 for the 25th Anniversary, 5000+ turned out and it was a terrific day for all. Her nominator wrote that she handles most of the work herself, using the committee to collaborate with and come up with solutions. Roger Johnson - Nominee - is noted for his ongoing and past activities regarding the outstanding leadership he has voluntarily provided to the Branchburg Community Garden. With over 85 plots representing approximately 60 families, the garden has required someone to step up to ensure that the garden runs well, covering the gamut of coordinating the communications; dealing with individual member issues; coordinating with the township to ensure that required maintenance, improvements and repairs are taken care of; coordinating and overseeing work parties as needed; proactively reaching out to new and current members to make sure that all are getting the most out of their garden experience; setting up a garden web site, and of significant importance, ensuring that coordination is established and maintained to provide the mechanics and organization for the food bank donations which provide for hundreds of pounds of produce and other items being donated to the local food bank annually. Kristeen Kohrs - Nominee - has lived in Branchburg for about 20 years. Her heart and home are open to just about any animal in need. Kristeen is currently active in several animal rescues and pet therapy groups. The Kohrs Krew is quite large. Kristeen is currently fostering a momma cat and her kittens. They are the most recent recipients in a long line of kitties that have been fostered. What is the tally for the kitties welcomed into her home, you ask? Well, that number is 391, and she has kitties of her own. And pups, big or small it does not matter. Currently, she has two great danes named Keena and Koi and three chihuahuas named Kevin, Gwen and Cecil. Koi and Kevin are both pet therapy dogs. For the past few years, multiple times a week Kristeen, Koi and Kevin get into the “Dane Bus” and head out to various places like Morristown Memorial Hospital or JFK Hospital, Midland School and other places to bring a little bit of sunshine into the lives of patients there. Kristeen is also the admin for the Facebook group “Branchburg Neighbors.” There too she saw a need and provided a helpful solution. As far as agencies: 1.) Scales and Tails - ferrets 2.) Jason Miessler - Nominee - is a coach and the Director of Branchburg Rec Softball. His nominator wrote that Jason is the best coach the girls could have had at a difficult time in their young lives, especially during the pandemic years. He was encouraging at all times and gently pushed them to do their best. The nominator’s daughter said, “He always had a positive attitude. When he told us we can do better, we knew it’s because he wanted us to be the best we can be. He never yelled except when cheering us on. When a player on the other team did something well, he encouraged them too.” Bernie Rosario - Nominee - is the voice of Branchburg. As the Township of Branchburg Communications Committee Chair, he is the producer of all the township’s content covering the town’s events and news. Bernie starts each video with “Hello Branchburg!” which makes him easily recognizable with the content he produces and contributes about the town. Bernie is also the unofficial town photographer and can be frequently seen running around the town taking photos that end up on the township page and in The Branchburg News. Bernie’s involvement within Branchburg is vast. It’s no wonder why everyone seems to know Bernie wherever he goes, as the head PR representative of the Township of Branchburg. Highlights of Bernie’s contribution to the Township of Branchburg: • Former Chaperone for SHS Marching Band and Photographer for SHS Marching Band • Former Chaperone for SHS Robotics, Former SHS Robotics Team VP and Former Adult Advisor (Currently takes pictures and video when asked by Robotics Team) • Current Republican District 1 Representative • Former Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselor • Current Branchburg Communications Committee Chair (he also takes videos/pictures for groups that ask that aren’t necessarily Branchburg-sponsored events but feels they are important like the Meghan Rose Bradley Foundation) • Volunteer for St. Ann Festa (when Festa occurs in the Summer) • Former Photographer for SHS Drama Club • Former Adult Advisor for three Somerset County 4H Clubs (Train, Broken Props and Astronomy) Congratulations to all who were nominated for the annual award. –Submitted by the Branchburg Township Communications Committee Branchburg Township Person of the Year Continued from Page 1

While in college, he would eat protein bars, but none of them would ever taste great. Also, his brother, who was in high school, had a peanut allergy and was unable to eat any of the bars, even those that worked for Patrick. He needed something that he could eat that was allergyfree, fast, easy, and high in protein. With the Covid-19 shutdowns, post-graduation was challenging for Patrick, and truly changed his life’s plan. Although he was on the road to medical school, his path diverted to creating a healthy, good-tasting, high-in protein, allergy-free snack. Patrick wanted to control his destiny. The lack of availability of good-tasting, allergy-free protein products gave Patrick the idea Patrick Manning with his Alio bars of creating a product to help him and the millions of others just like him who couldn’t find a quick easy bar to eat. With his family’s support and encouragement, he pursued the mission to create something that was never done before: A protein bar that was allergy-friendly, high in protein, low in calories, and not a seed or oat-based bar. After three years and hundreds of different formulas, names, and package designs, he finally had the first-ever allergy-friendly protein bar – high in protein, 15 grams of plant-based protein, and low in calories, (only 170 calories). It’s also high in fiber with 10 grams. It’s low in sugars, with only 3 grams and it’s free from the top 9 allergens, vegan, glutenfree, non-GMO, and Kosher Certified - all while tasting amazing and having a very soft, chewy, and moist texture. With zero business experience and limited financial resources, Patrick has marshaled his entrepreneurial instincts and accomplished what multi-billiondollar corporations haven’t. Using guerilla marketing tactics, he’s personally selling to college bookstores, gyms, via his website (www.livealio.com ), nursing homes, hospital gift shops, and more. He sold out his first production run within two weeks and he’s on his way to becoming a major player within the healthy snack category. Ten years ago, March 2014 – “Harsh Winter Creates Cabin Fever, Exasperation, Fun” -- that was the front page headline of The Branchburg News of March a decade ago. The harshness of the winter led to an email exchange with New Jersey State Climatologist David A. Robinson, a resident of Hillsborough, including the following passage: “Anyone with a snow shovel in Branchburg knows the peskiness of the way it came down. There seemed to be an eight-inch snowfall, followed by the cold, and repeat the cycle.” 20 years ago, March 2004 – The Little Red Schoolhouse’s “Bring Back the Belfry” fundraising campaign took a leap thanks to a $2,500 donation from Branchburg-based Advantage Bank. Additional donations this month brought the fund to $6,062.61. Funds raised were aimed at replacing the belfry of the historic one-room schoolhouse, which had been missing since 1947. Local Orthodontists Dr. Darren Loew and Dr. Niyati PatelParekh once again educated the children of Somerset and Hunterdon Counties for National Children’s Dental Health Month in February. The orthodontists visited elementary schools for the 24th year. Their engaging presentation emphasizes the importance of proper brushing and flossing techniques, healthy diet, and visiting the dentist twice a year in order to maintain healthy gums and teeth. They also highlight the role of braces and Invisalign in achieving optimal dental health. The doctors provide each child with a dental kit containing a toothbrush, floss, and timer, ensuring they have the tools they need. Elementary school students ask questions while learning about the importance of proper oral hygiene, featuring “Flossy” the dinosaur.
