Hiring experienced kitchen staff. Call or stop in to apply. The need for speed, exercise and partnering with gravity, led me on a quest for lighter, more efficient solo canoes. My first canoe was a 1915 Old Towne OCTA, a canvas covered cedar plank canoe. It weighed around eighty-five pounds. Not a problem back then, even carried down through the pasture and paddled to the Parkway bridge. A worthy craft which served many uses. The “ Wild Turkey,” as I christened it, negotiated tidal creeks in pursuit of ducks and muskrat and sailed from Clinton to the Raritan Bay in one day. Though heavy by any standard, that boat could pirouette and glide like no other. Then one day came the fiberglass Mad River tandem boat which tipped the scale at a mere sixty-three pounds. A veritable feather! That hull was popular in the early days of canoe racing and was marketed as an optional solo boat for a big person. Loved that canoe for its stability, two young kids and a black and tan coonhound could erase freeboard to the gunnels, and it remained comfortably stable. The quarter mile portage up and down the hills from home to pasture and launch, was a breeze. On a casual trip to the Jersey Paddler after a promotion at work, I discovered a new solo boat offered by Mad River, designed by Jim Henry, called the ‘Independence.” Lifted one end and it felt so effortless I had to purchase it on the spot. Forty-two pounds seemed the ultimate! What a beauty, dark green, light gray interior, battleship gray was my all time favorite color… ash gunnels, butternut decks and caned seat! I have arrived! Then came the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race in Maine each April after ice out. The Indy had to be the perfect boat for that race, sort of. The hull was marketed as a quiet water boat, not for fast water, rocks and waves. Well, it was my only option, so of course it was perfect…for me. As this was my first foray into whitewater, I made a crucial mistake, and was washed over a ledge and experienced time travel. The marketing ad never mentioned time travel capabilities of that hull. It was like going in for an operation and the pre op anesthesia stops you in mid sentence and next you remember; you are sitting in the waiting room fully dressed. I lost control entering an eddy and next memory I was twentyfive yards downstream searching for the river bottom and the crowd was cheering. I emptied the boat and continued to complete the course. The ”Winterbear” saw at least a dozen more trips down the Kenduskeag before I finished 20 years of that race. Now I had another Mad River boat, the “Traveler.” This was a large capacity Kevlar hull, ash trim, solo boat with a sliding seat and foot brace, and felt super stable. I ran this boat in the race a few times and it felt so comfortable. Weight for this sixteen and a half footer was 42 pounds. This was my safe boat, of course I never met a canoe I did not modify and replaced the original cane slider with a saddle seat and pedestal. Next boat was a Kevlar WWC1 Jensen hull designed for whitewater. That boat demanded it be paddled in rough whitewater when all your being said to give up, put both hands on the gunnels, take a deep breath and remember to stay upstream of the overturned boat. This boat was a hula instructor in whitewater, a trait never mentioned in the catalog description. Turned out this deep hulled, narrow boat with my modified tractor seat and foot brace was one of my go boats for winter wildlife photography. My quest for lighter and faster boats continued, mostly for my 11- mile journey down the South Branch to home pasture and up hill carry. Then came the DY Special, designed by Dave Yost, a solo Kevlar hull with aluminum gunnels, weight about 40 pounds, modified seat and foot brace of course. When I showed up to the race and set my boat down alongside the gathering of other canoes, I broke into a sweat, realizing I had 16 1/2 miles of rocks, waves and class whitewater ahead and my boat’s freeboard was a mere fraction compared to the assemblage deep hulled craft. I actually came in first in the Kenduskeag race twice in my class with this boat. Amazing how good it felt to get into a trance like rhythmic paddle stroke for three hours. A boat may be fast, but if it doesn’t feel fast, you can get psyched out. This boat felt fast! Figured I was at the pinnacle of speed and weight until I came across a Grasse River solo boat. It was almost seventeen feet long, black carbon fiber, pedestal seat and adjustable foot brace, plenty of tumblehome to promote a more efficient paddle stroke. Tumblehome describes the inward tilt of the midship hull, allowing the paddler to pull the stroke closer to the body as opposed to inefficiently reaching out away from the body to Black Canoe in High Summer The fast black canoe gently rests upon the lush green grass along the South Branch after a high summer run down the blue and silver water course.

This was the only boat I did not modify; it was as near perfect as a solo boat can be. I often refer to my local river run as a ‘thousand miles down an 11-mile stretch of river.” I love to paddle distance and this boat encourages that desire. When you buy a tool or a boat you have a purpose in mind. Some tools are for specific needs, others, general use. In my situation I might want to paddle for wildlife photography or fishing, but often I need to just put my head down and paddle; locked into the hull by saddle, thigh and foot brace and my Timex watch velcroed to the thwart. There is joy in movement and canoeing can be a perfect exercise that combines core, upper body symmetry and balance. My black boat is a thoroughbred, it feels fast and is fast. At 20 pounds, a real joy to portage any distance, over any terrain. This hull demands your attention, it does not tolerate diversion from the partnership. Though this boat is more specialized, it brings me joy to paddle. I save it for higher water to preserve the hull and for summer to accommodate the occasional penalty swim. It is my high summer boat that rests in memory upon the lush greenery along the river’s edge as I stow the carbon fiber bent shaft paddles and prepare to head home. Contact [email protected]. Black Canoe in High Summer Continued from Page 10 By Toni Lynn Burke Enrichment Teacher The Stony Brook School 5th grade gifted & talented class won First Place in the New Jersey State Bar Foundation’s Law Fair Competition in New Brunswick recently. The class was one of the top 10 entries in the state and first in their grade category. The students wrote and submitted an original mock trial case that promoted an understanding of the law and the justice system. The students presented their winning case at the NJ Law Center with Judge Francine Axelrad presiding over the case and other schools serving as jurors. Dawn Solari of Branchburg, retired Hunterdon County Assistant Prosecutor, was our mentor through this exercise, which educated the students about their rights and responsibilities under the law. The students are so proud to have represented Stony Brook School and Branchburg in this way! Stony Brook’s 26th Annual Showcase of Stars – On June 12, 4th and 5th graders participated in Stony Brook School’s 26th talent show, directed by Enrichment Teacher Mrs. Toni Lynn Burke. There were 32 acts from singers and dancers to a Rubik’s Cube solver. It was a fun day for all of the performers and audience members and for the always-energetic Mrs. Burke, as well. Talent shows are always awesome because of the talent on display, but Stony Brook’s is special because of all that goes into it. Mrs. Burke is retiring, so this one was her last, and we are proud to have been part of it. - Submitted by Haleigh & Megan Mastroserio, Stony Brook students Lacrosse All-Stars – On Sunday, June 4, Ryan Kappmeier and Noah Harris represented the Jr. Pioneers Lacrosse Club of Branchburg in the North Jersey 8th Grade All-Star Lacrosse Game held in Towaco. The Spring Luncheon was held at Neshanic Valley with 98 in attendance. The weather could not have been better for the beautiful view of the manicured golf course, and the food was out of this world. The entertainment was provided by our dear friend Joni Lauyer of Ocean Health at Rolling Hills in Flemington. Jerry Castaldo turned up the music and had a lot of our members on the dance floor. We ended the month of May with a trip to Sight & Sound in Lancaster, PA, with 50 members on the trip. We ended up with a great smorgasbord at Shady Maple. The show “Moses” was outstanding. At our June 1 meeting we stepped back in time with Dana Bala - The Kitchen Historian. She took us on an adventure of a hundred years in the evolution of culinary cuisine and kitchen gadgetry. We looked at advertisements and recipes from 1860 to 1960 and how everything in the kitchen has evolved over time. She shared cookbooks from the Boston Cooking School by Fannie Merrit Farmer 1896, The Suffrage Cookbook 1915 by Mrs. L.O. Kleber, Win the War in the Kitchen, What to Eat and How to Cook It 1918, The Joy of Cooking by Irma S. Rombauer 1931, Toll House Tried & True Recipes 1936, and of course the Betty Crocker Picture Cookbook from 1950! Dana even distributed a Brownie Recipe from Fannie Farmer 1896, WWII Chocolate Fudge Frosting and Mamie Eisenhower’s Million Dollar Fudge. (If you want the recipes, I will be happy to share them with you, just email Recreation.) We closed out the month with our June picnic at White Oak Park, hosted by the Branchburg PBA 397, with 90 seniors in attendance. A special thank you to Cpl. Jon Elbert and Ofc. Bryan Russoniello for organizing this event. The Branchburg PBA did an amazing job with the BBQ and proved that not only do they keep our township safe, but they are experts with their grilling skills. Lt. Scott Jepson manned the grill with Cpl. Jon Elbert, Sgt. Mike Decandia and Ofc. Bryan Russoniello with the assist. The officers mingled with our seniors and some even played a little Corn Hole. Our newly installed Police Chief Richard Buck along with our Township Administrator Greg Bonin were in attendance and made sure they connected with our seniors, answering questions and concerns. Thank you to Lt. Ed Edgar, Ofc.’s Kieran Green, Corey Neiper, Rob Gadaleta, and Cpl. Jeremy Weniger for taking the time to visit with us. We are taking a meeting break for July and August and will regroup on Sept. 7 with a meeting at Whiton Hills Community Room. If you want to join the Branchburg Seniors, and are a resident of Branchburg, just give me a call in Recreation - 908-526-1300 x 188. Have a great Summer! Cocktail hour begins at 6:30 followed by dinner, dancing, and entertainment. A silent auction will offer guests an opportunity to bid on themed baskets donated from businesses and individuals in our community. Tickets are available online at https://mrbroses.eventbrite.com. Cost is $125 per person. The gala is the premier fundraising event and will honor the memory of Meghan Bradley by raising funds to develop treatments for pediatric brain cancer. Donations to the MRB Foundation have supported projects associated with Columbia University, Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering Department, and the Children’s National Health Center in Washington, D.C. Each has demonstrated encouraging progress. The all-volunteer foundation was established in 2004, shortly after Meghan succumbed to a brain tumor. Her young life was cut short at age 16, just five short weeks from the time of her diagnosis. Please join the Bradley family and the foundation at the gala to remember Meghan and support the lives of countless others fighting pediatric brain cancer.
