Lesson 12.7 INTRODUCTION OF AIR POLLUTION
Air pollution , which is commonly thought to be the result of
the industrial revolution, actually preceded man himself.
Nature has long contaminated the air with sand & dust
storms, with forest fire & volcanic eruptions that threw tones
of particles & gases into the atmosphere.
The magnitude of the problem of air pollution,
however, increased immensely with industry relation &
urbanization. The pollutant late out by various industries &
automobiles have surpassed. nature’s contribution thousand
folds. The foul air that has come
To be execepted as an inevitable part of city leaving has
suddenly become intolerable in many of the well populated
cities of the world.
Lesson 12.8 INTRODUCTION OF AIR POLLUTION
To be excepted as an inevitable part of city leaving has
suddenly become intolerable in many of the well populated
cities of the world.
Lesson 12.9 TYPES OF POLLUTENTS
Pollutants are divided into two categories
1) Primary pollutants
2) Secondary pollutants
Primary pollutants : those are emitted directly from
sources.
Such as ash, smoke, dust, fumes, mist &spray.
Inorganic gases such as sulfur dioxide, hydrogen supplied
Nitric oxide, ammonia Etc.
Secondary pollutant : those are that are formed in the
atmosphere
By chemical interaction among the primary pollutant.
Such as sulfur trioxide, nitrogen dioxide, PAN, ozone
Kenton etc.
Lesson 12.9.1 EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION
• Air pollutant • Effects on man :
suffocation, irritation of eye,
sulphur dioxide throat, Respiratory diseases.
Hydrogen sulphide • on man : irritation of
respiratory passages, danger
paralysis & asphyxition
Nitrogen dioxide • Irritation, bronchitis,
effect on lungs.
Lesson 12.9.2 EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION
• Air pollutant • Effects on man : on
• Hydrogen floride man : irritation disease
of bone matting of teeth,
• Dust
Respiratory disease like
Silicones, asbestoses etc.
• Carbon monoxide Poisoning, increase
accident liability
• Carcinogenic hydro-
carbons cancer
