Safe Routes to School Parent’s Role in Keeping Children Safe

As a parent/guardian, you know that your children are always watching and learning from you. Parents/
guardians are the most important role models in a child’s life. This is just as true when it comes to safe walking as
it is with anything else. By modeling safe walking habits when you are out walking with your child/children,
it could lead to increased safe behaviors and decreases in walking-related deaths and injuries. Remember
every step you take is a teachable moment. With your safe walking habits as a guideline, your child/children will
be on their way to forming safe walking habits for themselves.

Here are a few basic safety behaviors you can role model for your child/children:

BE AWARE EYES ON THE DRIVER CROSS CAREFULLY
Engage your child by Make eye contact with Stop, look all four ways and listen

Safe Routes to School Summertime Traffic Safety

yourrialto.comDuring the summer children are out of school and will be more active in their
neighborhoods, so we need to be extra cautious of our young bike riders.

Summer Safety Tips for Drivers:

• Be alert, especially in residential areas.
• Expect the unexpected.
• Obey all laws.
• Be predictable.
• Double-check behind you and around you when backing out of a driveway or parking space.
• Don’t be distracted.

Bike riding is a lot of fun, it great exercise, but crashes happen. Important things
you can do to keep your child safe are:

• Have your child wear a helmet every time he or she rides a bike—no exceptions. Wearing a
helmet that fits well every time you’re on a bike helps protect their face, head, and brain if
they fall down. Just like the bike they ride, it should be the right size and not one the “will
grow into.”

• Teach your child the rules of the road to keep him or her safe while riding.
• Make sure your child’s bike is kept in good working order.
• Teach your child safe control of the bicycle. Both hands should be kept on the bike’s

handlebars. Books and other items should be carried in a backpack or a basket. And only
one person should ride a bike at a time—no exceptions.
• Make sure your child never wears headphones while bicycling. Your child needs to be able
to hear oncoming traffic.
