DALEEN NEL HALL Service to the school 2002 – 2007 BIOGRAPHY - Daleen Nel Hall completed her degree in Fine Arts and Educa on at the University of Pretoria in 1995 where she specialized in printmaking. A er comple ng her studies she pursued a career as Art, Design & Photography teacher for 11 years. Her most memorable years as an Art teacher were the years she taught at Pretoria High School for Girls in 2002 – 2007. In 2013 she relocated from Johannesburg to Cape Town. ARTIST’S STATEMENT - In these works that form part of a larger body of work en tled “I am not from here, nor there” I explore the emo onal and psychological effects of displacement as a result of migra ng and being forced to become part of an “unfamiliar society-culture” in order to survive. Be it forced or voluntary migra on, due to socio-economic and/or poli cal circumstances; migra ng from the familiar ‘self’ to the unfamiliar stranger - where one has no op on but to morph into a shape into which one does not belong, where one does not recognize one’s own iden ty and essen ally become alienated and detached from ‘self’ and the world. By making use of juxta-posi on, I emphasise the effects of this uprootedness, otherness and emo onal detachment experienced when foreign surroundings and socie es are o en ‘unwelcoming’ of outsiders.

ASTRID VAN DER LAAN Matric 2005 BIOGRAPHY - Astrid is Pretoria born and raised. Matriculated in 2005, she obtained a postgraduate degree in Informa on Science specialising in Mul media in 2009, and a Bachelors in Architecture in 2013. Combining the skills and experiences gained within industry, she is now working as a computa onal designer in civil engineering. Crea vity has always been ingrained in Astrid's essence, evident since school. Professionally, her exper se now resides in data structures, mathema cs, and extensive coding; however, the true quality of her crea vity thrives when paper, brush, pen, or pencil is in hand. Currently, Astrid describes herself as an art hobbyist, or ar st-a er-hours, cherishing the mere process of crea ng art as stress relief a er a full work day. The sa sfac on of comple ng an artwork; a deligh ul bonus. Nevertheless, a shi has occurred in recent years, as she is now earnestly commi ed towards taking art-making more seriously. As an avid member of the Johannesburg Urban Sketchers chapter Astrid is inspired, perhaps not solely by an individual, but the sense of community and comradery that art-making fosters. The same sense of togetherness is fostered in niche virtual spaces, and so much of what she has created recently stems from the annual Inktober challenge. ARTIST’S STATEMENT - Par cipa ng in the Inktober challenge, an event hosted online across social media every day in October, since 2019, the ar st has produced more than 100 pieces of art. Are they all unequivocal successes? Certainly not. Yet, the experience has kindled an unwavering inspira on to delve deeper into all facets of ar stry, encompassing conceptualiza on, mark-making, and con nuous learning. Typically, Inktober provides single-word prompts daily, tes ng an ar sts’ conceptualisa on through a range between seemingly straigh orward and abstract concepts, ideally each artwork should take no longer than a single day to formulate and complete, tradi onally, in ink. Art exhibited is work completed between 2019-2023 on A4/A3 grey or white paper, drawn and painted in black waterproof-ink, watercolour ink (where colour is added) and pen by hand, then professionally scanned, colour matched and printed on 200gsm archival paper.

BRONWYN COPPOLA Matric 2005 BIOGRAPHY - Apart from a three-year world-wide travel adventure mid-career, Bronwyn has lived and worked in Johannesburg since gradua ng with a BA Fine Arts (Educa on) from Wits. She taught Art and English, direc ng her efforts to cross-curricula methodologies, with a convic on that applying crea ve thinking to problem solving was the way forward in a changing world. In 2000, Bronwyn established a strategic communica ons company and specialises in represen ng the crea ve and cultural economies. Clients have included William Kentridge's The Head & The Load and The Centre for the Less Good Idea, the Joburg Contemporary Art Founda on (JCAF), RMB La tudes Art Fair, FNB JoburgArtFair, Keyes Art Mile and the Inside Out Centre for the Arts. As parts of the arts ecosystem, her company, ThinkARTMedia connects the public with ar sts, organisa ons, collectors and sponsors – and when she has some down me, her latest ini a ve, ThinkGOODFood provides delicious dinners and event catering to customers. And when she has some me on the side, Bronwyn also conducts art workshops to learners and adults from her studio, ThinkARTStudio in Parktown North. Drawing is her first love. Charcoal is her current medium of choice. But that is evolving too - into tex les and other tangibles. ARTIST’S STATEMENT - Women explode quietly and implode drama cally. We live with awe and envy, inadequacy and purpose, apprehension and triumph. Alone: we crumble - o en with obedience and the insidious weight of expecta on. Together: we fight, we fall, we claw back. In this series of three drawings, I have built fic ous communi es of women in the hope of finding an iden ty that isn't defined by beauty (or its absence). My drawings search for women who struggle against being boxed by their flaws, labelled by their opinions, confined because of their competencies or filed according to their sexuality. It's about the divisive impact of male-dominated social controls and the enormous collec ve strength and generosity that women find amongst each other - underwri en by an ever-present sense of impending doom and impermanence. As a female, you may recognise a version of yourself in my church-like spaces with close walls and looming roofs. As a male, perhaps you'll stop and think. If you iden fy differently, I hope this lives for you.

CHANTAL COETZEE Matric 1983 ARTIST’S STATEMENT - The tle of this exhibi on, “African Queens: Restoring History” sums up the inten on of this body of work. As an avid history geek, I soon realised that history is wri en by the victors and oppressors, and therefore slanted in their favour. As a child of Africa, I wondered what the true history of this vast con nent could be, ravaged by so many and misrepresented by European historians, thereby jus fying the colonial mindset. As a woman, I began to wonder if any African countries have been ruled by female monarchs through the ages and, of course, how well they were received by the men of their me. To my surprise and delight, my research uncovered not one or two, but more than 20 African Queens, thus far! These Women of Africa ruled na ons with extraordinary skill and strength. Some were military strategists that expanded borders, some fought off colonialists, while others vanquished slave traders. All protected their people with superb leadership and relentless stamina. This exhibi on showcases nine of these impressive women. It is part of an ongoing series of iconic portraits aimed at bringing these women out of the shadows of history and to showcase their accomplishments against the societal construct of where a “woman's place” should be. The pain ngs of “African Queens: Restoring History” are a series of inten onally large, confron ng portraits. Each Queen is grander in scale than the human observer. She's centred and unapologe cally makes eye contact with the viewer. Her physical appearance is based on eyewitness accounts, etchings, or renderings and, if none are documented, I have used ar s c licence based on her na onality, ethnicity, religion and accomplishments. Each portrait contains clues that reveal biographical informa on about the Queen and her historical context. I've incorporated gold leaf in each portrait, either as a background or in selected items, to add to the sense of power and royalty of each personality. My inten on with this body of work is not to diminish the achievements of men, or to further polarise the genders. My aim is to celebrate these newsworthy women and, simultaneously, turn a spotlight on the absurdity of the dis nc ons that we make. We discriminate based on gender, yes, but also based on na onality, race, class, religion, and age, to name just a few, and these Queens are all but invisible because of the prejudiced hand that wrote the history we know. Despite the rise of women's ac vism, many governments around the globe s ll support policies, laws and customs that suppress and subjugate women. The road to enlightenment is long, and as Fannie Lou Hamer (civil rights leader and women's rights ac vist) famously said… “Nobody's free un l everybody's free.”

From there it grew to portraits in pencil, chalk and pastel as well as s ll life in oils. Presently, I'm experimen ng with mixed media using subject ma er from my European adventures. CHEREE JANSE VAN RENSBURG Matric 2014 BIOGRAPHY - I started my art career of the passion and skill of my encouraging mother. Her alacrity for life spread to me and that is why I developed the urge to express the beauty around us through art. I use all mediums but really enjoy inks and of course sculptures. My passion for ar stry is con nued in my hobby of lapidary. However, my day job is in water engineering where my crea vity is also used to create solu ons for water issues faced by our country.
