MATHS OLYMPIAD

The third and final round of the South African Mathema cs Olympiad
(SAMO) was held on Thursday, 25 July, at a few central venues around the
country. The top 100 juniors (Gr 8-9) and the top 100 seniors (Gr 10-12) in the
country were selected from those who wrote the second round of SAMO.

Emily Hawkes (Gr 9) was selected to par cipate in the third round at Pretoria
Boys High School. The junior paper consisted of 15 Olympiad-level
mathema cal ques ons, while the senior paper consisted of 6 even more
challenging problems that kept the learners busy for four hours (and leave
them wishing for more me!) SAMO provided an ideal opportunity for
learners to test their mathema cal abili es and to challenge themselves to
improve their skills.

We are very proud of our very own genius for bringing home a bronze award.

Junior Soccer, Athlone took gold, while Clarendon and
Duncan received silver and bronze respec vely. In Senior
Soccer, Van Zyl gleefully accepted first place, with Clarendon
in second place and Buxton in third. In Hostel Soccer School
House won first place in Senior, Junior and mixed matches
with a penalty shoot-out.

On 23 July the Matrics, wearing quirky ou its, jumped into
the freezing waters of the school pool for the famous Polar
Bear Swim.

The event was kicked off by a Matric belly-flopping into the
pool and leaving her golden crocs floa ng as she swam the
length of the pool. Matrics, donning combina ons of
strange clothing, followed her into the pool to the cheers of
the spectators.

It was enjoyed by all involved and hopefully the memory of
the icy waters will keep them all cool during the upcoming
warmer seasons.

On 25 July, the Inter-House Athle cs took place at Afrikaanse
Hoër Seunskool (AHS). The Houses Cheerleaders kicked off
the event with surprisingly energe c cheers. Throughout the
day the DJ played upbeat, gleeful songs.

There was a mul tude of heats, races and intense compe on
between the houses. The teachers' race provided well needed
comic relief before the results were announced. Van Zyl once
again took gold with Clarendon in second and Duncan in third
place. McWilliam, as expected by all, won the Spirit trophy.

The day ended with a sensa onal feeling of joy. All involved
walked back to school with proud smiles on their faces.
