This year was once again jam-packed with excitement. The energetic Minnie Mice cheerleaders graced
Athlone Grade 8 Camp was a fantastic, spirit-building
event. They came in the top half at the Gr 8 Gala but they Athlone’s presence at the Inter-house Swimming Gala
did Athlone even more proud with their good manners, and Athlone’s super-heroes plus super-villains seized their
moment on stage with the comical play Just Super at the
House Play Festival. The ‘sweet strawberry field’ jersey
display was ‘berry’ well done, thanks to the Grade 10s and
once again Athlone donated many jerseys to the needy.
Athlone’s ‘McKnow-Knows’ outsmarted the rest of the
school to win the General Knowledge Quiz.
The moment that stands out the brightest this year for
me was certainly at the Inter-house Athletics. We lived up
to our motto! We showed the school that Athlone CAN
come second in the Athletics and still win the spirit cup!
To all Athlonians, they say friends are hard to find
but Carla and I always know where to find you! With an
awesome Head of House, Mr Jelley, dedicated teachers as
well as all the enthusiastic and dedicated Athlonians, may
this blazing Athlone fire shine forever.

This year started on an exciting note with our new Buxtonites Bu x ton
showing enthusiasm at the Grade 8 Camp which was an
awesome way to start the year. Their spirit at the new Grade Buxtonites proved what stars they were when they organised
8 Fun Gala proved that they were all in the right House. the 2011 jersey display. The rest of the House gave their
support by bringing in jerseys – a perfect example of true
‘Buxton is back from the dead’ was not only our theme team spirit. We’ve got the spirit yeah! man yeah!

house Athletics as the girls supported the athletes. We took
sixth place.
Our Buxton debaters managed to keep our winning streak
alive, taking first place again in our Inter-house Debating.

Connaught was greeted with an enthusiastic group of 40 years! This inspired us for the rest of the year, setting
Grade 8s this year, who started off on a high note by the tempo in spirit and enthusiasm. Connaught then
winning the Grade 8 Gala. The highlight of our year was came second in the Inter-house General Knowledge

The annual National Girls’ Schools’ Festival proved to be
the biggest challenge for the Chess Team as all participating
teams played chess. Although some games were lost, the
team still managed to use the knowledge and skills gained
from the tournament for league matches throughout the year.
When the Chess Team played against Eunice, the scores
equalled. As a result both teams wish to beat each other next
year at the annual Eunice Day. May the best team succeed
in 2012!
The 1st Team ultimately managed to beat their rivals,
Afrikaans Meisies Hoër and therefore were placed second in
the league. Congratulations to all the teams that participated.
Many new aspects were introduced to the Chess Club this
year, all of which were well received. These aspects included a
Chess Team of ten members participating in a Co-ed League
in which the girls performed exceptionally well; a fun Blitz
Championship where Marlise van Tonder and Mirielle Wacal
were tied in first place, and a School Championships where
girls could compete for a place in the school team.

The 2011 Golf season has been a really great one. For the Front Row (L-R): Jessica Aereboe, Mrs M Andrade, Angela Correia
first time in many years we have faced more than one girl who
has been less intimidating than playing against a whole team
of boys. Out team was placed in the D Division of the High
Schools’ League and with the level of golf increasing each year
we have had to strive and make every putt count. Our team
has grown in leaps and bounds over the last year and I am very
proud to have captained such an enthusiastic team for the last
three years. Win or lose, each player was ready for the next
match with a smile. The positivity and perseverance of the
team are what will keep them going in the years to come.
I must thank Mrs Andrade for all her love, encouragement and
support that she has shown over the last three years. She truly
is the driving force behind the Golf Team and without her my
task at hand would have been impossible. So as I move on
I wish the 2012 Golf Team all of the best for the next year and
may the next season be even better than 2011!
