Aitken I find it rather difficult to describe what has been an unbelievable year for Aitken. The
year started with a group of Grade 8s being welcomed to the Aitken family. The new
babies had all the spirit and enthusiasm that makes a true Aitkenite. They carried this
enthusiasm through to the Grade 8 Camp where they managed to rank first overall in all
the activities and did unbelievably well in the Grade 8 Gala. The much anticipated Inter-
house Gala rolled along and here Aitken proved, once again, why we are the spirit
champions. Everyone showed an energetic display of spirit and passion for the House,
spurred on by the originally themed cheerleaders in their “Nerdcore, So Hardcore” gear.
The atmosphere was infectious and Aitken went on to win the Spirit Trophy for the third
consecutive year. Aitken’s never-ending talents were once more showcased by an
outstanding cast in this year’s House Play Damian’s Will. Congratulations go to the
Director and Co-director Rachel Sola and Andisiwe Kumbaca as well as Chevanne
Potgieter for receiving the Best Actor award. Aitken’s Grade 10s continued to bask in the
creative rays with their excellently created jersey display, bringing to life the Candyland
theme. Not only the creative spirits but also the braniacs, the Aitken team consisting of
Cleo Floudiotis, Janke Malan, Samantha Kee, Ona Botha and Mashadi Mogase did
immensely well in the Inter-house General Knowledge Quiz, ranking third overall. The
Inter-house Athletics came along and the Aitken masses rolled upon the Affies stands
armed with Aitken-coloured paper plates and burgundy tainted spirit. Even though we
ranked tenth overall, a big congratulations must go to all who were brave enough to
participate in the name of the House and to our shining stars of the day, Gonste Letsapa
and the U14 relay team. Aitken in 2010 has most certainly been a House to be proud of,
climbing the ranks in the Clephan Shield and never failing to show unquestionable spirit
and love for the House.
To the Aitken Head of House for 2011, I wish you the greatest success and hope that you
will continue to instil the values that Aitken so strongly stands for: spirit and devotion.
To my right arm, left arm and supporting foundation, Cleo Floudiotis, thank you so
much for being such an amazing deputy and friend. Without your efforts my job would
have been impossible. To the Aitken cheerleaders, Rea Motsamai, Tarryn Small,
Rochelle Kirstein and Andisiwe Kumbaca as well as the Aitken matrics, thank you for all
your help and support. And lastly, to Ms Dugmore, my gratitude to you is indescribable.
You are what holds Aitken together and only someone as phenomenal as you can head
such an amazing House. We love you Aitken, deep down in our hearts.

Athlone The year 2010 was a year of high expectations. The year when football fever
was at its peak. The year of Ayobaness! But here at Pretoria High School for
Girls, it was Athlone’s year.
The year kicked off on a good foot. The new Grade 8s were enthusiastic
about joining the Athlone family. Fun was had by all at the Grade 8 camp
where the Firepuff Girls showed off their super powers. They participated in
numerous activities and in a nailbiting finish at the gala, they were placed a
superb second. Then everybody’s favourite House activitiy came along – the
Inter-house Gala. Our cheerleaders blew everyone away with their theme
where they were upgraded from pantsulas to gorgeous Athlone ladies.
In the Gala, our girls swam beautifully and we came out victorious for the first
time in twenty-two years! The House Plays were next on the calendar and ours
was called The Staffroom and was directed by Kelly-Jane Williams and Michelle
Bettman. Aswati Alummottil was nominated for the Best Actress Award.
The General Knowledge Quiz was enjoyed by all and our representatives did
us incredibly proud and were placed second. Then the winter breeze came
blowing by and we did our bit for charity. The Grade 8s did a brilliant job with
their well-constructed Cokeman which drew all the attention. Athlone’s
favourite charity, Inter-house Athletics, came by. Everybody set high goals
and standards for themselves and for the third year in a row, again we were
victorious.
The House Week will take place early in November and we are sure that
Athlone will not disappoint.
This year I truly understood why Athlone is the only House where excellence is
not an exception but the norm.

Buxton It has certainly been a victorious year for Buxton, in my opinion, and the ladies of
Buxton have made me extremely proud by trying their utmost to excel.
The year commenced with a fun-filled Grade 8 Orientation Camp that left most
of us sunburnt and with a new string of friends. On Friday we played games with the
various Houses and we ended the night off on a very melodic note with songs such as
Mamma Mia and YMCA. Saturday morning started really early with a nutritious
breakfast to fuel us for the Fun Gala that awaited us. The Buxton flag waved high as
our young lasses broke records and in the end, finished in first position.
After this, the excitement of the Inter-house Gala slowly started seeping in,
especially for the cheerleaders. Our theme was Michael Jackson and if I may say, we
pulled the look off! The Buxtonians swam their hearts out and the rewards were all
worth the efforts. Buxton came out victorious in second position!
Our House Play was directed by two young ladies in Grade 11, Micke van Zyl and
Megan van Staden. Since they were experienced, they did not let Buxton down,
winning an award for Best Set. We are very proud of you ladies and our heartiest
congratulations to you.
This year Buxton was represented by a number of girls who inspired us to keep
our brains working, at the Inter-house General Knowledge Quiz. We secured a
pleasing position and left the younger grades aiming to fill the big brainiac shoes to
fill.
Even though there was controversy around the Jersey Display, Buxton still made
us very proud with an innovative theme and a mountain of jerseys collected!
The recent Inter-house Athletics left the Buxtonians with a few tears on our
cheeks but the hunger to persevere! Buxton finished in eighth position but that
doesn’t mean we are giving up. Well done to all the athletes who represented Buxton
and put in an effort.
House Week will take place in November and sports such as Soccer and
Basketball will be played, amongst many others. Good luck to all the participants
and I know Buxton will make me proud.
I would like to thank all the teachers for being there and helping Buxton rise to the
top. The spirit of the Buxton was at an all time high, the attitude was positive and I
am feeling sad that I have to go. I will definitely miss you all.
Aobakwe Nembahe (Grade 12)
Clarendon Multi-talented? Most definitely!
2010 has been a super epic year for Clarendon! So we might not have won the
Clephan Shield BUT one thing this House has had, is fun!
We started the year with the Grade 8 Camp where our new babies joined
the House with enthusiasm, spirit and drive. New friendships developed
amongst the young ones through the games and activities in which they
participated. They also enjoyed the gala even though they were placed tenth.
The Inter-house Gala was amazing where the cheerleaders stunned the
crowd in their cool ‘pimp’ outfits. Clarendon was placed fifth at this event.
Well done!
Once again the Clarendon cast of A Change that Loved the World did an
amazing job in presenting this House Play. Thank you to Sofia Zway and
Yentel le Roux for directing this play. Our play won the award for Best
Ensemble and Best Director.
The 2010 Jersey Display was really great. The Clarendon theme was Follow
the Yellow Brick Road with bricks leading from each entrance of the hall. The
Grade 10s did a great job in putting this display together.
In the third term, Clarendon showed great spirit in their participation in the
Inter-house Athletics where the house was placed third. Well done to all our
athletes!
This year Clarendon has been AMAZING!
CLARENDON! The memories and friendships made in this House will
live on forever! Keep being cool, Clarendon, you’re the best!

Connaught The Dark Blue colour of our prestigious House carries the symbolism of
importance, confidence, unity and intelligence. In another word:
CoNnAuGhT! Our Superhero ‘Conquering Conovians’ set the year for an
exciting start. Our Grade 8s, at the annual Grade 8 Camp, worked together
representing our goal to be united as the Dark Blue Ladies who ‘Stay True to
Blue’. The Grade 8 Gala showcased the talented individuals who love to swim
for their House. They made us proud through their perseverance and were
finally placed fifth. We all lived in a Blue Submarine this year at the Inter-house
Gala. Our blue and white flags flew high, shaping our efforts as we took fourth
place.
In the first term, Skye Pienaar and Nicole de Sousa, our directors, led our
confident actresses to victory in being the Best Play production of 2010!
Katlego Lekalakala was the shining star in taking Best Actress and showing her
brilliance in writing this screamingly funny play Ghetto-ly Ever After, taking the
festival by storm and claiming the title of Best Script. Yet another victory was
just around the corner as Keyuri Naidoo, Nolo Moche, Simone le Roux and
Unathi Nkhoma rose to the top in the General Knowledge Quiz and claimed
first place! They also represented the school in the Inter-school General
Knowledge Quiz. What outstanding achievements!
As the weather got colder it was time to: Make a Wish Come True and Let’s Go
Blue and Stop the ‘Flu! The Grade 10s, at the Jersey Display, made a difference,
supporting the Genie of the Lamp and creating hope, excitement and
enchantment for all. Enthusiastic volunteers raced around the athletics track
and put in a great effort at the Inter-house Athletics and were placed sixth.
This year has flown by but it will definitely not be one that will be forgotten.
Thanks go to Ms Turpin and all the Connaught staff for their dedication,
support and guidance throughout the year. Thanks also go to the matrics and
especially Adelaide, for their hard work, enthusiasm and spontaneity in making
this year GrEaT! To all the ladies in Dark Blue: continue to strive for greatness
and make the most of every opportunity! Overall it has been a memorable year
and I am very honoured to have been a part of it.
Jacqueline Hawker (Grade 12)
Duncan What an incredible year it has been! Duncan started off with a bang
when our new recruits were taught the ropes by the super heroes in
charge at the Grade 8 Camp. The cheerleaders went all out this year
with their military theme. The entire House was transformed for the
evening and we were all extremely proud to be a part of Duncan. Once
again the dark green House managed to pull off a fantastic House Play.
The audience immediately took to The Interrogation Room directed by
Ronley Cooper and Samantha Rogers. Everyone who attended the
Inter-house General Knowledge Quiz had an absolute ball. The team
consisted of Zizi Dlamini, Leonette Craffert, Ting-ting Zhang, Caitlin
Wagner and Trudie Spangenberg and even though they did not know
every answer, they were creative. Our Grade 10s did not let us down
and Superwoman, along with her sidekicks, brought a lot of warmth to the
Jersey Display. Duncan managed to collect 143 jerseys to be distributed
and the knitted squares were in abundance this year. Inter-house
Athletics was yet again a fun day on the calendar. Duncan proved not to
have the greatest athletes but the greatest sportsmanship. Through all
the good times and bad times, Duncan kept it together and we leave this
year as a stronger family!

Gladstone Our busy and successful year began with our Grade 8 Camp. The Grade
8 girls also helped to create the Gladstone banner and participated in
composing their song which lead to the birth of the ‘To Infinity and
Beyond’ slogan. In the Fun Gala we were placed fifth.
At the Inter-house Gala our cheerleaders were dressed in the 1960s
and 1970s afro-look and we certainly stood out in our eccentric blue afros
and lovely blue bands. Again, we came fifth in this gala. Much fun was
had by all.
‘He says, She says’ was the name of our House Play, directed by Marie-
Claire van den Berg and Diana Mawoko. Our costumes looked great and
special mention was made by the adjudicators. The year soon marched
on and we supported our Inter-house General Knowledge Quiz
participants who were Olivia Middelton, Marie-Claire van den Berg,
Netseke Hortonn and Nicole Camara. Winter arrived and the Jersey
Display was next on our agenda. Our theme was aptly named Eskimos and
Igloos. At the Inter-house Athletics we were placed second overall and
special mention must be made of Andrea Manual, Taryn O’Brien and
Samantha Ferreira for their excellent performances. The spirit and
attitude of the girls must be commended.
May our House grow from strength to strength. It was great being
part of all the activities over the past five years. We wish our matrics all
the best for their exams.
Otile Mooketsi (Grade 12)
McWilliam We started the year by welcoming our energetic Grade 8s at the Grade 8
Camp. The weekend was fun-filled and ended off with the gala which
brought our spirit to an all time high.
We brought the Disco-five to the Inter-house Gala, with our diva
cheerleader and McBling Ladies cheering our swimmers along. The
charity Big Drive was enjoyed by all and the matrics played outstanding
soccer. The Grade 11s looked gorgeous at the Valentine’s Ball, the
Grade 10s swam like fishes in their Big Swim, the Grade 9s toned their
bodies in the Boxercise and the Grade 8s got fit in their Big Walk. Live
Theatre was our play, directed by Ntombi Ngwenya and Zinhle Novazi.
The annual General Knowledge Quiz was represented with a great
team that took eighth place. The Jersey Display ‘Concrete Jungle’ was
absolutely creative. Congratulations to the Grade 10s for a wonderful
job. Inter-house Athletics was an exciting event with our cheerleaders
geared up once again brining the spirit to the House and athletes, with
McWiliiam tying for eighth place.
Thanks must go to Ms Cass, the McWilliam form teachers, the
cheerleaders, to the McBling Girls and lastly to my partner, Kelin
Oelofsen, for the support and motivation. Keep blinging ladies!

Selborne ‘Higher achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation’ is a
quote by Jack Kinder which was very relevant for our House this year. We aimed high
and achieved higher than we could have imagined, not only in House activities but in
our meetings that brought about camaraderie, greater spirit and enormous hope. We
began the year with the Grade 8 Camp where we met our little new babies. They were
keen on taking part in all the activities that the prefect super heroes had in line for them.
The Grade 8s made Selborne proud by winning the Fun Gala. This was the beginning
of our success. Then in the school gala, Selborne gave the rest of the school a lesson
with the help of Barney, the dinosaur, at the Selborne Academy. It was a joyous day, jam-
packed with lots of spirit and excitement and we were content to find out that we came
third overall. Our House Play, 5 Finger Discount , by Busi Ntisa and Monica Blignaut,
had the audience in stitches with its witty comedy. It received enormous credit and
Best Supporting Actor was awarded to our House.
The whole school participated in a General Knowledge Quiz but only the top five from
each House were selected to participate in the main quiz. Our five participants were
Robyn Barlow, Kathrin Gioia, Alexa Gioia, Yelena Mohamed and Liezel Swiegers who
were trailing behind in tenth place but made us proud by ending in seventh place. Then
the Grade 10s were in charge of the Jersey Display where they organised a cute Tea
Party in Lala Land, filled with lots of colour and what Girls’ High girls cannot resist:
cupcakes. The matrics had their final athletics day and were proud to end their legacy
with a pleasing third place. Although they could not participate in the fun House
Week, they knew Selborne would do us proud. One of our very own matrics, Akhona
Mafenuka, represented our House by being one of the few girls to represent South
Africa in Singapore with the Formula One In Schools’ Competition. As a House, we
stood behind her and were so proud of her. In fact, as a House overall, Selborne was
very supportive and eager to take up any challenge given to them. A huge ‘well done’ to
our House for coming second in the Clephan Shield competition this past year.
I personally could not have asked for a better house to have led and without the
support of my deputy, Lize Mostert, Mrs L du Toit and the matrics, it would have been
difficult. I am content with what Selborne has achieved and I feel we have been
blessed this year. To all my Selbornites, thank you for an amazing year and keep being
the stars that you are.
Olebogeng Morolo (Grade 12)
van Zyl Van Zyl’s 2010 began with the Grade 8 Camp. The Van Zylian Grade 8s
were polite, amped and proud to be sporting the neon orange. At the
Inter-house Gala our cheerleaders tried hard to find Van Zyl’s spirit but
did not quite achieve it. Our swimmers were great, especially Nadine in
Grade 11. We ended seventh in the gala. The entire House is to be
congratulated on the number of jerseys brought as well as the Grade 10s
who made a lovely display. The House Play, ‘Subtly Senile’, written and
directed by yours truly, with Tanja Schmid as my co-director, was a great
success. A special mention goes to Violet Nyirenda for her amazing
performance. Then came the Inter-house Athletics – what a day! Our
runners were superb, especially Zinande in Grade 8 who won three gold
medals. Our cheerleaders were inspired and, through perseverance,
found Van Zyl’s spirit. We came fifth in the Athletics and won the Spirit
Cup! A definite highlight for Van Zyl. To Catherine Humphries – thank
you for being a dedicated and helpful Deputy Head of House. I think we
made a great team! Mrs de Bruin, your love and will to better Van Zyl
made all the difference. To the 2010 Matric class who was the TOP
academic class EVERY YEAR since Grade 8 – you guys are amazing!

This sport requires many hours of hard work, from training

exceptionally challenging.

Hockey
The 2010 Hockey season began with a promising start for the First
Hockey Team. With seven matrics and a lot of hope we began
the season with hard training sessions in the intense heat.
Our first test arrived in the form of the annual St Mary’s
Festival. In our pool we played the majority of our matches
at Kingsmead – all of which we won which enabled us to
play for positions one to eight. After two losses we ended
up seventh out of twenty-four teams from around the
country. Then the league began. We started off by playing
against AHMP. Our dismal performance resulted in a 0-2
loss and many uneasy feelings about the upcoming All Girls’
Festival. We managed to win all our pool matches through
determination and guts, ending top two in our pool. For the
cross pool playoffs we had to once again, play against AHMP.
We then played for fifth or sixth and ended sixth in the
tournament. After a lot of effort, hard running and more sweat
than we would like to admit, we came fourth in the Pretoria
League. Sadly luck was not on our side this year and although we
did not obtain the results we had hoped for, the 2010 Hockey Team
was a force to be reckoned with.
The future of PHSG hockey still shines brightly as the younger teams
have done so well. A big thank you to all coaches and teachers
involved in hockey and especially to Mr Reid-Ross who really uplifted
our game and Mrs van Zyl, without whom the First Team would not
be the family I know it to be. To the girls – always BELIEVE!

This year we all started with a goal: to
become qualified lifeguards and be prepared
to save a life. With the guidance of Mrs
Mariaan Koolen, who runs her own
lifesaving club, and coach, Mr Gustav Gröpp
and the determination of the girls, we have
achieved our goals. Theory and practical
exams were done in the fourth term, but
preparation for them started on day one.
Spinal board and rescues were practised in
the pool and in winter, CPR, chocking and
theory were done. The girls also wrote many
prep tests and in addition some participated
in the FPA exam to allow them to do duty at
open water events.
This year Brittany Mann, Victoria Horne,
Azille Schulze and I were very lucky and
fulfilled our lifelong dreams of wearing a red
costume, red shorts and a red t-shirt
(Baywatch style) while being official
lifeguards at open water swimming events
such as the Bosveld Myl. These were
fantastic experiences that we enjoyed greatly
and hope to continue with other Girls’ High
lifeguards.
Joining lifesaving at PHSG is a great
opportunity for acquiring a very fulfilling,
useful skill and I am very privileged to have
led this team. Special thanks to Mrs de Sousa
for organising and looking after us and to
Mrs Koolen for opening the window for all
of us. A big thanks to all the girls for making
it a year to remember.

The 2010 Netball season was memorable and special to
all the girls who participate in this wonderful sport.
The First Team squad showed admirable
commitment and dedication by attending First
Team practices throughout the off-season. The
PHSG First Team played in the St Andrew’s
Festival for the first time, where they played
against twenty of the top schools in the country.
During this festival the players formed a very close
bond and learned how to play together as a team.
The First Team was then given the exciting
opportunity to fly down to Stellenbosch to compete
in the Annual National All Girls Schools’ Festival.
The team improved with each match they played and
gained a lot of experience from the tournament. All
the Netball Teams enjoyed their friendly matches and
the highlight of the season for most of the players was the
trip down to Bloemfontein to play against Eunice.
Congratulations to Zenande Booi (U14) and Boipelo Nyatlo
(U15) on being selected for the Gauteng North Netball
Teams.
A big thank you must go to Ms Grover who efficiently took
over the role as Head of Netball this season. She also took the
initiative to enter an U15 team into an Action Netball League,
which was a tremendous success. Lastly, I would like to thank
every single player who contributed to making this netball
season unforgettable and wish them good luck for the next
season.
