WINTER WOOLIES

DRIVE

By Teagan Hawkes
Every year, towards the beginning of winter, the school has a
winter clothing (or winter woolies) drive. The drive aims to
collect clothing items for the winter from learners.
Items that could be donated include new or used sweaters,
jerseys, blankets, beanies and scarves. All second-hand items
that are donated should be in good and wearable condi on.

The school then donates the clothing to charity for those who
need it most. This year the final deadline was Friday 6 May and
items were given to the Good Shepherd Sisters Mission.

WHAT IT WAS LIKE ON DERBY DAY...

By Kayleen Weyer
First things first, waking up at 3am, ge ng ready to win the
games and pu ng on the armour of our school, Pretoria High
School for Girls, was rather difficult to tackle in the dark blue
skies, but it was worth it at the end of the day. When the buses
arrived, one would have thought it was going to be a boring trip,
but it wasn't! In fact, it was one of my favourite trips to date due
to the pre-game pump and the laughter on the bus. My friend
and I slept for a while on the bus (and so did the others) un l we
woke up …
When we arrived, it was spectacular as all the Pretoria Girls,
Parktown Girls and Potchefstroom Girls waited in line for the
opening of the day. Instruments were played by the Potch girls,
accompanied by cheerleaders who performed with dance
moves. I was impressed that every Potchefstroom Girl greeted
us “Good morning” or “Good a ernoon”.

When the opening finished, everyone dressed in their sport or
cultural gear. My team raced off to the Diamond Astro excitedly.
We played…and played…and one could hear the thumping of
spirits by all teams and cheering by the cheerleaders for our
games to succeed.

When our team finished the match, we walked around and
experienced human beings as statues and fairies who weren't
allowed to speak! One girl came up to our team and asked if she
could cheer us up by playing on one of her instruments and
jumping side to side. I would say she was rather successful as
she had everyone laughing and enjoying what she performed.

All said, the bus trip back was rela vely quiet but we s ll sang,
laughed, spoke, slept and mostly with everyone. When we
passed the other buses we waved at them of course.
As a Pretoria High School girl, these are events and experiences
that every learner should seek to have. I therefore encourage
you to try it out next me, you will only gain enjoyment of the
experience with your friends, peers and teachers.
