THE
Hui Family
1977
A Senate Committee of Management of the Hui Oi-Chow Trust Fund (hereinafter
the Fund) was set up in 1977 to administer the fund established by the late Dr
Stephen S. F. Hui. The most generous donation, made in memory of Dr Hui’s father,
Mr Hui Oi-Chow, was to be used in the construction of the Hui Oi-Chow Science
Building, which would then house the Department of Geography and Geology.
The first HK$2 million was used to establish the Fund, in the hope that it would
encourage further research and study in the earth and environmental sciences,
both fields of particular interest in Hong Kong.

In 1991, The Hui family donated a further HK$4 million to the Department
of Geography and Geology, HK$3 million of which was to be used to establish
the Dr Stephen S. F. Hui Trust Fund, in memory of the late Dr Stephen S. F. Hui,
with the remaining HK$1 million going to supplement the original Fund. It was
intended that the two funds would separately support works related to the two
major areas of interest of the Department:
(i) the Dr Stephen S. F. Hui Trust Fund would support research and scholarly
activities related to earth sciences, particular geology, physical geography, and
environmental sciences;
( ii) the Fund, in turn, would be used to support research and scholarly activities
related to human geography, such as transportation, urbanization, and regional
development.

2019
In addition, the Fund also has a long history of contributing to a range of awards and
providing various other means of support to members of staff and students in the
Department by supporting:
(i) research grants;
(ii) visiting scholars;
(iii) travel grants;
(iv) conferences, seminars, workshops, and training courses;
(v) departmental equipment and books for teaching and research;
(vi) scholarships for students from China to study higher degrees; and
(vii) grants for conferences organized by the Department of Geography and held
in Hong Kong.

Hui Oi-Chow
Trust Fund
Since 1977, the Hui Oi-Chow Trust Fund has unwaveringly
supported the staff of the Department of Geography. Not
only does it offer numerous academic and scholarly awards
in the field of geography, but the long-term relationship
provides valuable opportunities and encourages continuous
outstanding research and study.

Research
Publications
Thanks to the generous support of the Hui Family, the Fund has helped the
Department’s faculty members conduct excellent academic research and scholarly
activities. Since 1987, over 130 research outputs have been published with more
than 2000 citations. Some of our research outputs have been published in Q1
journals (Impact Factor 2018), such as China Quarterly, Cities, Environmental
Health Perspectives, Environmental Research, Journal of Cleaner Production,
Quaternary Science Reviews, Transportation, and Transport Reviews. The following
is a selection of research papers supported by the Fund. Studies cover a broad range
of both human and physical geography topics, including public health, transport
and logistics, environmental studies, sustainable urbanization, tree-ring studies on
climate, and China studies.

Departmental Van
In 1979, thanks to support from the Fund, a Department van was purchased to
transport students and equipment during field studies. In 2011, the van was replaced
with a new Toyota Hiace light goods vehicle. “Donated by the Hui Oi Chow Trust
Fund” was printed bilingually on both front doors to express the Department’s deep
appreciation for the Fund’s long-standing financial support.
