COMMUNITY

Our projects include St Albans Flyerz, a
disability hockey project with Oaklands and
Access Sport, extending to youngsters with
learning difficulties. Our Schools Project
sends coaches into local junior and senior
schools. We run Hosted Events like university
visits and promote leadership and officiating.

In March 2016 we hosted a visit by South African international, coach and top umpire
Lance Louw who conducted free coaching sessions at 7 local schools and a Masterclass
at the club. Our first Schools Invitational Tournament and international Masterclass was
funded by Partner money and also took place in March 2016.

NEWS

In early June 2016 St Albans HC was delighted to announce the appointment of Dillet
Gilkes as its first ever Club Development Member and as a Club Coach. Dillet is a
midfield player and professional hockey coach. He is a Trinidad and Tobago international
who played international Under 21s (Pan American Junior Championships 2000) and
has played senior international hockey (outdoor and indoor) since 2001, winning gold
in the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico and bronze in the
Indoor Pan American Cup in Ontario Canada. He has played in three Commonwealth
Games (Australia 2006, India 2010, Glasgow 2014) and hopes to play in the 2018
Games. He is an assistant coach (under 16 girls) at England Hockey’s JRPC (Northwood)
and is a bronze-qualified goalkeeping coach with England Hockey. Dillet joins from
Chelmsford HC where he was 1st XI player and head coach (2011-2016), and also
coached the boys under 16s and under 18s. At St Albans HC, Dillet will play in the
men’s 1st team, outdoor and indoor. As a coach he will be leading newly scheduled
development sessions on Tuesday and Thursday early evenings, coaching on several
Sunday morning colts sessions, acting as a Saturday pool coach for senior ladies’ and
men’s sides, and coaching on holiday hockey camps.
Dillet Gilkes said: “I am over the moon to be part of such an ambitious club”.
St Albans men’s 1st XI Head Coach, England and Great Britain men’s team manager
Andy Halliday, said: “Dillet’s addition to our squad is a major boost as we look to build
towards achieving a sustainable National League place. I would like to thank our
Corporate Partners, without whom this would not have been possible”.

NEWS

In June 2016 St Albans HC also announced that Adele Sammons would be joining the
club for the 2016/17 season. Adele will train and play with the Ladies 1st team and
act as a pool coach for senior teams on a Saturday. Sammons (aged 22) is a defender
and midfielder who has been on a 4 year international sports (hockey) scholarship at
Ohio University since 2012. She previously played for Old Loughts 1st XI from the age
of 16 and was U18 player of the year there in 2011. She played for Saxon Tigers u18
team in the 2011 Futures Cup tournament and attended HIPAC in 2010. In the US
Adele made both the All Mid-American Conference first team and conference team,
in successive years. Sammons, who returns to the UK in August, said: “The ambitions
of St Albans Hockey Club are very exciting and I wanted to be part of it. I cannot wait
to begin training with the team.” The move, backed by St Albans Head Coach Hannah
Macleod who is currently representing Great Britain in the Champions Trophy, will see
Sammons reunited with St Albans player Amy Kee. Kee, who was herself a former junior
international and US hockey scholar, coached Sammons in Ohio and said: “She is a
great competitor and solid defender with awesome distribution”.

CHRIS HOBSON is SAHC’s official photographer whose work adorns the walls and
banners in SAHC clubhouse at Oaklands. He is the father of SAHC Ladies 1st XI player
Chloe and is a frequent visitor to the Club, and member of the Tangerine Army. Chris
used to be a hockey goalkeeper, in the days of face masks and ski gloves, before
helmets and proper padding. He is a real estate litigator at Olswang solicitors. He is a
fan of the music of Santana and Deep Purple and, after 25 years as a coach potato, took
up running to do a 5k in 2015 but wrecked his achilles and now keeps to photography.
