To Mom, We find ourselves here with family and friends celebrating
the end of a life well-lived. During that lifetime you wore
many “hats.”

You were more than a mother to us and a grandmother to
our kids because, you were a surrogate, or honorary mother
or grandmother to many. We haven’t forgotten the Hanks,
the Valeries, the Waga Nagas, the Nicholases the Wesleys
and countless more kids along the way.

You were also a mentor and an instructor to your students,
a friend to some lucky people, and simply that nice woman,
“Ms. Barefield” that cooked, sewed, laughed, and talked on
and on and on to others!

You were the best mother that you could be at the times
that we most needed you to be… Through thick and thin,
triumphs and disappointments…. You extended olive
branches, a helpful hand, a smile, lots of chatter, and often
some unsolicited advice… As you smoothed things over and
placed emotional band-aids absorbing great stress, great
anger, and great sorrow as only a mother could.

The most important lesson you taught and shared over the years and even most recently was one of
acceptance and tolerance. You did so because you continued to grow and evolve as you kissed “it”,
patched “it”, and forever worked to make “it” called “ life “– better for all of us! One such obvious example
of this was the celebration of Kwanzaa. As we recall, the three of us first celebrated Kwanzaa in our
childhood. You gave it back to us in our early adult lives as you observed who we cared about, who we
loved, who our friends were, and relationships that produced children for us and grandchildren for you.

These friendships and relationships, many of which have
continued over the years, encompassed individuals from multiple
races, cultures, religions, and lifestyles, Some folks financially well
set, others much less so. You returned Kwanzaa to us recognizing
that it allowed a joyous, secular, noncommercial celebration of a
holiday season where all were welcome, well-fed, and lessons were
taught about life, and cultural and familial values were stressed.
It was a favorite time of the year for you because you enjoyed
having young people around and sharing your talents with them.

Over the years, adult grandchildren and old friends from our
teens, past students from classrooms, several with their kids,
appeared during that week to share, talk, eat, dance, and laugh
with you. That’s why it is only fitting that we hold your end-of-life
services to celebrate your life this week. We thank you all for
joining us today.

With Peace and Love,

Order of Service

Grandma Carol has had an indelible impact on my life. Through her, Tarik
and I gained the invaluable experience of Kwanzaa which has shaped my life
growing up in many ways. As she imparted it to me, I shared it with others; I’ve
acquainted every academic institution I’ve attended thus far with Kwanzaa,
and I am sincerely thankful for that.

Love, Adrian
