Obituary

Annette (Barnes) Lucas, affectionately known as “Little Bit” began her life on August 6, 1938

in Gary, Indiana, the fourth of eleven children born to the late Ollie Garfield Barnes, Sr. and Thelma Brooks
Barnes. She transitioned from this life on Sunday, October 25, 2020.

Annette, having grown up in the “2-5” neighborhood, attended Roosevelt High School, from
grades K-12, graduating with the Class of 1956. She fondly participated in the Glee Club and the school
marching band, enthusiastically playing the French horn. Annette became an active member of St. Monica
Catholic Church.

Annette pursued degrees from Eastern Illinois University and DePaul University. She worked in
the school systems of Racine, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois, as a speech therapist and was a tireless
delegate for the Chicago Teachers Union. After serving students for thirty plus years, Annette retired from
Alex Haley Academy Elementary School.

Annette was an active member in many social and civic groups, including The Red Hats, The South
Holland Master Chorale, Glen Woods Keno, and Growing, Learning, Serving, Inc. (GLS). Patients and staff
at Ingalls Memorial Hospital genuinely enjoyed her volunteerism.

Annette rarely missed mass at St. John’s Catholic Church where she participated as a Lector and
sang with the choir.

She gave her all to her pastimes. Annette was proficient at bowling, sewing, puzzles, painting and
crocheting. She was a master Sudoku player. She loved watching tennis, especially those Williams sisters.
Annette loved sports!

Annette enjoyed traveling (in and out of the country) with family members and her long-time
friend, Dr. Evonne Blakey.

Annette thoroughly enjoyed family get-togethers and frequently served as a hostess in her home
for many events. She could fix a “mean” pot of greens!

After residing in Glenwood, IL and Flossmoor, IL, Annette relocated to Stockbridge, GA, to be near
her son, Chip, who resides in Atlanta. The move to Atlanta allowed James, a Delta Air Lines pilot, as well
as Annette’s sister Diana Satterfield and niece Donna Blair additional opportunities to spend time with her
and continue to create memorable moments.

Her loving son, James Antoine Lucas (Chip), mourns his mother’s passing. Deeply grieving her
loss are siblings, Katherine (Barnes) Lorden, Ollie Barnes, Jr., Thomas V. Barnes, Betty Barnes, Milton
Barnes, Jeanette (Barnes) Pike (Alvin), Lenora Barnes, Edward L. Barnes, Donna J. Smith and Diana B.
Satterfield.

Remembering her with love are devoted relatives, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a
multitude of friends. Her former husband, James Lucas, remained a steadfast and early presence in her
life.

Annette will be missed by many. She brought enlightenment to so many lives and will forever hold
a special place in our hearts. Remembering “Little Bit” with a lot of love.

Poem Tribute for Aunt Annette

God called you;
The best way that I know to accept the unacceptable.

God needed you;
That smile, that glow, that ray of sunshine, that divine soul.

God saw you;
Broken, hurt, in pain, and discouraged.

God healed you;
No more pain, suffering, forgetting, and loneliness.

God moved you;
You are at your final resting place, where the floors are made of marble and gold (fancy, huh?)

Then, why am I still heart-broken and miss you so much?
