2 | 8 The Rt Rev Datuk Danald Jute Message from Bishop Dear Teachers, Students, Parents and all friends and supporters of our beloved St Columba’s School. Many congratulations and felicitations to the big family of SMK St Columba, Miri on your 94th Patronal Festival. It is wonderful to gather to mark and celebrate this significant moment, alongside the 100th Anniversary of St Columba’s Church, more so after Covid19 pandemic has denied us the opportunity to celebrate the last three years. No one needs any reminder that our Church and Schools are intricately connected. All praise and glory be to God! God in His faithfulness and goodness has sustained us and caused us to flourish and be a source of strength, truth, and righteousness. We honour and give thanks to God for the pioneers of our School and all those who have gone before us - those who planted, nurtured and tended this school, those who have taught and studied here, those who have contributed in one way or other, to make our school what it is today. As we celebrate the past, we can look to the future with confidence and hope - that our school flag will fly even higher with pride. And so I want to encourage teachers, students and parents - be proud of what you do, for what you are doing has lasting values. As tomorrow begins today, and the future starts now, let us continue to offer our best so that the generation to come can stand proudly on the legacy that we will be leaving behind for them. For that reason, we must know our calling, our vocation and what we stand for. Unless we know what we stand for, we will not be able to stand firmly and steadfast. We will have nothing to communicate from lack of identity within. My prayer is that we may all know that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 9:10) Blessed 94th Patronal Celebration! The Rt Rev Datuk Danald Jute President, Mission Schools Bishop of Kuching

3 | 8 School Patron of Saint Columba was born on the 7th December 1521 A.D. in Donegal, Ireland. He was involved in the building of churches and a charismatic leader. During this time that a dark incident changed his life. Because of the conflict involving the freedom of speech, Columba and his followers attacked those that are of different understanding with him. This incident had cost loss of lives and left a deep mark in Columba. He regretted his hasty act and was filled with remorse and guilt. As his own self-punishment and to redeem himself and seek peace in his heart, he left his hometown and go on a journey. Columba’s journey was to carry out evangelistic missions to save the souls of human kind from sin and destruction. Columban’s decision to do so was a way to redeem his past mistakes. He passed away on the 9th June 1597 A.D. in Iona, Scotland. The interesting facts about Saint Columba was his due diligence in doing his work. He will put his full attention and do it with all his heart whatever that he wants to achieve. He also could face and overcome his own weaknesses with a brave and strong heart. He is always ready to help those that are in need. His life portrays the humility and the sacrifice of oneself for the benefits of others. School’s Founder Reverend Canon Paul Chong En Siong Saint Columba school was started on 16th January 1929. In the beginning, the school only consists of an old government building with 13 students. The idea of establishing the school was inspired from an Anglican priest from Sabah, Reverend Father Paul Chong En Siong. Together with another priest, Reverend Father F. W Synnott, they decided to start a school in Miri. From there, Saint Columba’s school was established with Reverend Father Paul Chong En Siong himself at the first headmaster. Rev. Father Paul Chong served from 1929 to 1935. This school was named after an Irish saint, Saint Columba who was always ready to do God’s work by helping others. Saint Columba

Their faith and obedience to God made what Saint Columba’s Church is today. I strongly urge the present members, both local and abroad, to carry on the good work started by our founding fathers.” Remarks by : Retired Bishop the Rt Reverend Solomon Cheong Sung Voon Acknowledgement Sincere and heartfelt gratitude bestowed upon every individual involved directly or indirectly towards the 94th Patronal Celebration of our beloved school , especially our Honourable The Rt Rev Datuk Danald Jute President of Mission Schools , Bishop of Kuching for gracing our ceremony.
