Message from The Hon John LEE Ka-chiu, GBM, SBS, PDSM, PMSM Chief Executive Hong Kong Special Administrative Region 香港特別行政區行政長官 李家超先生，大紫荊勳賢，SBS, PDSM, PMSM 獻辭 It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the 25 undergraduate students who have been awarded this year’s Innovation and Technology Scholarship. The award winners come from six Hong Kong universities. Alongside Medicine, Engineering, Surveying, Computer Science and Business Administration, students from Global China Studies and Arts Technology also received the Innovation and Technology Scholarship this year. All are worthy recipients, imbued with a passion for innovation and technology (I&T) and a commitment both to pursuing excellence in their chosen field and to Hong Kong. Each winner will receive a scholarship of up to HK$150,000 to study in the mainland or overseas in the coming year. This year’s Scholarship focused on six Innotech areas of specialisation, designed to expand our I&T talent pool. To keep up with technology’s rapid and continuing advances, Hong Kong has embraced one of the nation’s guiding principles – that talent is our primary resource, technology the primary production force and innovation the primary motivating force, as emphasised by President Xi in his report to the 20th National Congress. My thanks to the Scholarship’s organiser, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, as well as its sponsors, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and the Innovation and Technology Commission. I am also grateful to the Awardee Selection Committee for its laudable and painstaking work, which included paper-vetting and interviews with nearly 50 short-listed candidates. A special thanks to this year’s Scholarship mentors, prestigious leaders from society, academia and business, each of whom provided students with significant support and encouragement. My Government will continue to prioritise the development of I&T and related industries. In doing so, we will raise Hong Kong’s competitiveness, while improving quality of life for the people of Hong Kong. My congratulations, once again, to the 25 award winners of the 2024 Innovation and Technology Scholarship. Congratulations to all the awardees this year. Hong Kong’s Innovation and Technology industry is flourishing, making it an ideal destination for emerging start-ups and unicorn enterprises. To ensure Hong Kong’s continued success as a leading international city and innovation hub, nurturing a talented generation in innovation & technology is a top priority. HSBC is honoured to support this vision and proud to co-found the Innovation and Technology Scholarship. Established 14 years ago in collaboration with the Innovation and Technology Commission and The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, this programme has supported 350 talented undergraduates from local universities to pursue their career aspirations in the innovation and technology sectors through numerous developmental programmes. Hong Kong’s business landscape is constantly evolving. Many sectors are exploring strategies to address challenges such as the impact of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, the importance of sustainability, as well as the savvy application of business and finance technology. A diverse talent pool is needed to meet future socio-economic development trends and sustain Hong Kong’s continued success. This year, the Scholarship has crossed disciplinary boundaries to attract young talents passionate about InnoTech from various fields. This change not only encourages the younger generation to combine knowledge from different sectors but also equips them to use technology to engage with society and promote sustainable growth. As our scholars, we encourage you to stay curious and venture beyond conventional norms. The world awaits your audacious innovations and your fearless innovation spirit. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Innovation and Technology Commission and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, enriching the city’s talent pool, and shaping the next chapter of innovation and technology in Hong Kong. The late great physicist, Professor Stephen Hawking once said, “Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious.” This is the driving force behind every social, scientific and technological progress, vividly illustrated by Newton’s uncovering the mystery of gravity under the apple tree and Darwin’s thesis on the origin of species and theory of evolution. Human curiosity has shaped the world we live in today. With the support of the Innovation and Technology Commission and HSBC, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups has been organising the Innovation and Technology Scholarship since 2011, and has recognised 350 outstanding undergraduates to date. These distinguished students are as passionately curious and innovative as their predecessors, and are courageous in exploring unknown fields. The Scholarship not only acknowledges their achievements, but also encourages their pursuit of knowledge and continuous exploration of science. Through the diverse elite training programmes of the Scholarship, they can discover the world in this challenging and opportunistic era, connecting knowledge and ingenuity, while acquiring skills through experiential learning. This year, the Scholarship has, for the first time, broken the boundaries of disciplines and established six major areas of innovation and technology. It emphasises participants’ creative aspirations, who are then encouraged to make good use of the Scholarship resources to realise their pioneering ideas. We firmly believe that the Scholarship can serve as a bridge connecting different individuals, bringing together expertise and ideas from different fields, sparking ground-breaking ideas of young talents while igniting their passions to connect society and change the world. The continuous success of the Scholarship in these years is the result of the collective efforts of all the partners. I sincerely thank all mentors, members of the Awardee Selection Committee and Scholarship Administration Committee, and various companies and organisations that have provided amazing internship opportunities. Finally, congratulations to all the awardees. “Innovation and Technology Scholarship” was first launched in 2011 and has achieved remarkable result. Under the joint sponsorship and support from the Innovation and Technology Commission and HSBC, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups organises the Fourteenth Scholarship this year. The Scholarship aims to recognise outstanding undergraduates from local universities who are passionate about InnoTech. Every year, it selects and awards 25 of the students nominated by the Vice-Chancellors/ Presidents of universities. OVERSEAS/MAINLAND ATTACHMENT PROGRAMME 海外/內地暫讀計劃 With the Scholarship, awardees will have the opportunity to visit overseas/Mainland universities for attachments related to their field of study. 得獎者將獲資助到海外或內地學府，就所修讀的學科作相關研習。 Since 2011, awardees have undertaken nearly 550 overseas/ Mainland attachment programmes, which can broaden their horizons and equip them to be compatible in this globallyconnected world. 自2011年起，歷屆得獎者已參加了近550個海外/內地暫讀計劃， 得以拓寬視野，使他們能與全球接軌。 9

Each awardee will be assigned to a mentor, who is an outstanding personality in the field relevant to the awardee’s study.
