Our oceans don’t have time to wait!

urtles have been around for over 200 million years, but
their survival is now under threat. Of the seven species of

Tsea turtles, six are on the International Union for

Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species; this
list is the most accurate indicator of the health of the world's
biodiversity.

Turtles are called an indicator species because they provide vital
insights into the health of complex marine ecosystems. Looking
at it another way, conserving and preserving turtles has a direct
impact on the lives of other marine creatures – and on the
whole ocean system. Five of the seven species of sea turtles are
found in the Indian Ocean, making Kenya a key conservation
country.

Green turtles are Kenya's most populous residents, often

spotted resting and relaxing on the reefs – and getting their

shells cleaned by the fish. Their favourite foods are found in the Kenya's Turtle Conservation Projects and what they do:

A n international business and convention centre soon to be
built in Mombasa, will upgrade the status of Kenya’s
second largest city upon its completion. The planned
construction of the landmark building is aimed at improving the
city's reputation as an international destination and a regional
hub.

It is envisaged that being a tourist destination, the centre will
also act as an incentive for international conferences, meetings
and exhibitions in East and Central Africa region. The proposed
facility will be known as Nyali Business and Convention Centre,
an equivalent of Kenyatta International and Convention Centre

It is anticipated that the centre will add diversity to the various

ALI BARBOUR'S

Cave Restaurant

Author: KELLY-MARIE MARTIN

Kenya in general has a lot to offer when it
comes to food, with many influences from
around the world, it is not difficult to find
your favourite dish. But if you are looking for
something which offers more than just delicious
food, then Ali Barbour's Cave Restaurant could be
the perfect place. The restaurant not only offers a
selection of tasty dishes, but the whole experience
is unique and offers something for all. As the name
suggests, the restaurant is based in a beautiful
cave along the coast in the small town of Diani,
south of Mombasa. The restaurant is certainly on
the higher end but provides guests a one in a life
time experience, which is certainly worthwhile,
especially if you are on holiday in the area or want
to celebrate a special occasion!

The restaurant offers every guest excellent service
before you even step through the front door,
providing all guests who book transport right from
your hotel or residence. The driver arrives
promptly, and you are whisked away to the
restaurant. As you walk into the restaurant you are
welcomed with calm music, ambience lighting and
a friendly host. You first need to make your way
down a staircase to enter the cave. The beauty of
the restaurant hits you as soon as you make your
way down. There is truly something magical about
being inside a cave, the uneven sloping walls,
rough to touch, but almost mesmerizing, as
everywhere you look there is something new to
see. Although simple in décor, the restaurant has a
mix of Arabic and Swahili charm, which fits the

environment perfectly. As you step down from the
restaurant reception and bar to the restaurant area, your
eyes are immediately drawn to the ceiling where the starry
evening can be observed through the caves large natural
openings above, the setting is perfect and as you sit down,
cozily at your table and gaze at the stars, you really do get a
feeling of peace and serenity.

The restaurant, often busy throughout the evening, receives
people from all over, with families, couples and small parties
wining and dining. Although every table is filled, it is on the
contrary, a rather private dining experience. The menu has
a great selection of food, wines and cocktails and really
does have something for all, including a separate menu for
vegetarian's, which has to be one of the best selection of
vegetarian options I have personally seen. As I order my
food, choosing a starter and a fish dish for my main, I
decide to enjoy a cocktail in the restaurant bar. Sitting at
the bar, I again find myself staring at the rocky interior, and
admiring the small Swahili seating that is scattered around
the bar area. You can't help but wonder how such a place
has come about, which I soon came to learn from
information available at the bar. It is believed the cave is
between 120,000 to 180,000 thousand years old and is part
of a series of interlinking chambers, going as deep and 10
meters below ground level. There are caves dotted all
along Kenya's shoreline, and the cave restaurant is part of a
larger cave structure that pierces miles inland. Furthermore,
the cave which was formed in coral reef limestone, would
have historically been underwater, at some point being
home to the diverse marine life found in the Indian Ocean.

Apart from the necessary changes needed to allow the cave
to function as a restaurant, the cave has been mostly
untouched. The only addition to the restaurant is the stone
floor, along with furniture, lighting and sound effects. The
natural holes which allow diners to sit under the starry night
has a sliding cover, so to protect all during times of bad
weather.

I make my way back to my table and I am welcomed with
warm fresh bread while I wait for my food. My starter arrives
and is both tasty and nicely portioned. As soon as I finish, the
waitress promptly takes my plate away and my main is served
shortly after, impressed by both the friendly staff and efficient
service, my main course does not disappoint. The fish, which
is both fresh and flavorsome, goes down well and the waiting
staff time everything right, always serving you with a smile
and never too far to top up your wine but just far enough to
give you privacy while eating. I watch as others order food
which is rolled out on a hot grill and cooked and served while
eager diners watch, other diners take the opportunity to
photograph the beautiful surroundings. I finish my experience
with a delicious dessert and a coffee. It is worthwhile noting
that during the whole dining experience no plastic straws or
bottles were used. With the water served in a glass bottles
and paper straws provided instead of plastic. On departure,
the host arranges for my pick up, again another bonus to
eating at the restaurant, as you are safely returned back to
your residence or hotel.

The Ali Barbour Cave restaurant did not disappoint, with
great food, service and overall beautiful ambience. It certainly
should be on everyone's to do list when in Diani, although on
the higher end of the dining experiences along the coast, this
old and beautiful cave which happens to have an excellent
restaurant within, is certainly worth a visit.

part of KPAs multi-billion shilling ambitious project to develop
eight of its eleven small ports in the country. The ports include
Lamu, Malindi, Kilifi, Mtwapa, Kiunga, Funzi, Vanga and the
Shimoni Port which has the largest harbour of all coastal small
ports. When KPA undertook a master planning study for small
ports, it identified Shimoni as potentially the most viable for
development to increase trade among the scheduled small ports
in the country. Shimoni Port receives goods between Kenya,
Zanzibar and Pemba. On completion of the new port, it is
anticipated that Shimoni Port will also serve small ports in
Seychelles, Mauritius and Madagascar.

The offshore port has a capacity to handle up to 50,000 metric
tonnes of cargo per year and this capacity will promote KPA’s
mission to facilitate and promote global maritime trade. Shimoni
has a wide well-sheltered deep channel which can conveniently
allow the docking of large sea-going vessels. The expansion of the
Shimoni Port is expected to supplement the Port of Mombasa
which is also undergoing expansion with an aim of increasing its
trans-shipment business to grow its regional market share.
Currently the port serves its hinterland which includes landlocked
countries like Uganda, Rwanda, DRC and South Sudan. Mombasa
Port has been losing its market share to Dar-es-Salaam due to
congestion at the port and ICD.

Currently, it is only the Port of Mombasa which is fully developed
with modern equipment, hence making it preferred to handle
import and export cargo. Records at KPA show that import
business through the port increased by 33% last year (2018).
Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) acknowledges KPA’s commitment
in sustaining growth and development of port facilities in order to
promote shipping and maritime industry in Kenya. KPA is a state
corporation which is responsible for maintaining, operating,
improving and regulating all scheduled seaports on the Indian
Ocean. KPA’s Managing Director Daniel Manduku acknowledges
that Shimoni would be a fishing port to tap the Blue Economy and
the vibrant fishing sector in the South Coast. He says KPA will build
a multi-purpose berth that will incorporate fishing and handle
other cargo adding that storage facilities will also be set up
comprising value addition and fish-processing plants.

Stakeholders in the shipping industry say that the construction of
the port will create more opportunities for cargo efficiency. “We
welcome any initiative that will make clearing of goods less costly
and also efficient. We expect that with the coming in of Shimoni
Port, prospects are high that we will have less cargo congestion at
Mombasa Port and the ICDs”, said the Secretary General of Inter-
governmental Standing Committee On Shipping (ISCOS), Kassim
Mpaata. Goods received at Shimoni Port are handled and
managed by KPA in liaison with other government agencies like
the Immigration department, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA),
Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS), Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS),
among others.

With the expansion of Mombasa and Shimoni Ports, it is expected
that trans-shipment of goods and cargo will substantially increase,
leading to growth in sea trade which has been influenced by
recent global developments in the maritime industry including the
drop in ocean freight charges, technological changes and fuel-
efficient ships.
