Introduction
Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Mohamed Zain bin Shamsudin, also
known as Jins Shamsuddin was a Malaysian actor,
director, politician, writer, and producer. In his 50 years in
the profession, Jins has appeared in over 40 local and
international films, as well as directed a few box office
movies and his first film, Matahari, was released in 1951.
Jins rose to prominence as the Malay James Bond after
starring as Jefri Zain, a secret agent, in the film Gerak
Kilat, which introduced local audiences to the action-
thriller genre.
04
Aside from acting, Jins was also a lyricist, with one of his
songs, Selamat Hari Raya, sung by Fazidah Joned, being a
perennially popular hymn. In politics, he was appointed as a
Senator and was the first artist to have the title of member
of the Senate, serving two terms (2004–2011). After being
diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, he took a hiatus from
politics and the arts to focus on his health.
He is remembered for successfully inspiring Malaysians and people
from neighbouring countries through his acting, directing, and
delivering messages of patriotism, courage, devotion, loyalty, and
difficulties, as seen in the film Bukit Kepong, which he directed. Jins
has received numerous awards and honors throughout his life,
including best actor and best director, and has been bestowed
various titles by royal houses in appreciation of his contribution to the
film industry, thanks to his enthusiasm and dedication.

CHAPTER 1
Early Life & Family
06
With the marriage of Shamsuddin bin Kassim, the father, and Mariam binti
Syed Amir the mother, Mohamed Zain bin Shamsuddin was born or known as
Jins Shamsuddin. This beautiful moment marks the date on November 5, 1935,
in Taiping, Perak. He was provided with a great education and he never missed
school even though he frequently changed school, that is just how great his
love for education is. To add, he discovered about the acting life while he was
still studying in 1956 and even made his film debut in ‘Keadilan Ilahi’ and ever
since that, he started being active in the industry and he was even being
offered to learn about this film industry in London.
Jins married actress Rahmah Rahmat in Singapore in 1961. Rahmah Rahmat
was also a hit actress born in Singapore, she is known for her act in ‘Batu
Durhaka’ in 1962, and before that, she also acts in ‘Batu Belah Batu Bertangkup’
in 1959. As a result of their union, they have a son named Jefri Jins. However,

However, there was a conflict in their family. In between his first and third 07
marriage, he got his second marriage in 1973 with Jamilah Shukor and is
gifted with a second child in the family and was named Hang Tuah @
Shazrin. But the third wife makes a statement that Tan Sri Jins
Shamsuddin only has 3 children and does not include him, which caused
the controversy. Hang Tuah went to the extent of making a press
conference in a hotel stating that he is the real child of Jins Shamsuddin
alongside his lawyer and even bringing in all the proof he had.
Putera Hang Nedim was there at the press conference too without Hang
Tuah knowing, so he stated that the statement made by his stepmother
was just a satire, she never truly meant that. She was just trying to make
him realize that he is still the child but he never went on to check on his
father, Jins Shamsuddin’s condition for four years. Putera Hang Nedim even
said that he should not bring this matter into the public since it is a family
matter, but Hang Tuah said he got to clear his mom’s name from all the
hatred and slander makes by the public towards Jamilah Shukor because
she was also the wife of Jins Shamsuddin.

Education
09
He attended Melayu Bendang School in Siam for his
first primary studies. Since the Japanese Colonial era,
he acquired his early education through the Japanese
school manner. At the time, he was experiencing the
same sufferings as everyone else as a consequence of
the Japanese occupation of Malaya. Furthermore, Jins
Shamsuddin was chosen for “Special Malay Class” at
King Edward VII School in Taiping, Perak, in 1948. He

which was the same level as Senior Cambridge. Thus,
ACCESSION NUMBER:
2001/0025913W Jin Shamsuddin passed the Senior Cambridge
examination in 1956, intending to continue his studies
at the University of Malaya in Singapore.
10
However, his expectations were dashed when the university’s
Admission Officer notified him of the status of his application
stated would be considered at all times. Three months before
the deadline, his granduncle, a teacher at the famed Anderson
School in Ipoh, successfully enrolled for an electrical
engineering study in England.
He spent his leisure time every night taking English classes while
living with a brother who was a director for Radio Malaysia’s
education. Since 1956, he slowly engaged with fashion, theatre
staging and also appeared in Shaw Brother’s first film “Bayangan FIGURE 3: PENDOKUMENTASIAN

11
On January 14, 1970, he was offered to continue his studies in the film
industry. Jins Shamsuddin continued his studies in the film industry at the
London Film School from 1970 to 1972 and graduated in First Class
Honours with a Diploma in Film Technology (Motion Picture Technology).
He was the first Malay who was involved in the film industry there.
Previously, he already directed two films called “Bukan Salah Ibu
Mengandung” and “Di Belakang Tabir”. Despite all challenges and issues,
he stayed unwavering and as a result, he was rewarded with a scholarship
by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).
Two years being abroad, he had studied in various fields, such as film
production, scriptwriting, lighting, and camera setup. He earned a First
Class Diploma as a result of his efforts. Moreover, he was also invited to
see Appolo’s spaceship launched in the United States of America.
Furthermore, in 1999, he was awarded as “Ijazah Kehormat Sarjana
Persuratan” by the University of Science Malaysia.
12
With all of his sacrifice and dedication to the
pursuit of knowledge, he finally awarded in a
doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) by the University of
Northern Malaysia (UUM), on March 24, 2010,
during the 23rd UUM’s convocation. However, in
this regard, Halijah, his wife, informed that her
husband’s major cause of Alzheimer’s was his
tendency for overthinking at a young age and
his participation in Ph.D. program. Nevertheless,

throughout his journeys and sacrifices, from

more successful and known as a figure who

CHAPTER 3
Career
14
In the early 1950s, he began his film career under the supervision of
film legend Tan Sri P. Ramlee. Jins appeared in 46 films during his
lifetime, 31 of which were shot in black and white and the rest in color.
Jins began his acting career with P. Ramlee in Pancha Delima, a film
with a plot that was quite similar to Beauty and The Beast. Jins
portrayed a charmed snake who could only assume human form at
night in that 1958 picture. He saves a poor woodcutter and begs for
one of his daughters in exchange. This lovely damsel in distress was
instrumental in breaking Pancha Delima's spell.
Jins worked hard and learned a lot from P. Ramlee when he
first started out in supporting parts. Over time, he was able to
persuade major movie studios of his acting abilities. From then
on, his career accelerated, propelling him to prominent roles in
blockbuster films such as Sarjan Hassan (1958), Megat Terawis
(1960), Si Tanggang (1961), and Neracha (1962).
15
In 1969, Jins took a stride forward when he obtained the
confidence to begin directing his films. He began
accepting dual parts near the conclusion of the black-and-
white cinema period, a rare capacity that few movie stars
possessed. Bukan Salah Ibu Mangandong (1969) and Di
Belakang Tabir (1970) are two of his most well-known films,
in which he both directed and acted (1970).
Both of these films are significant since they contain P.
Ramlee in supporting parts. It was said at the time that
getting P. Ramlee to perform in a film that he did not
direct was nearly impossible. As a result, the film industry
FIGURE 5: SIMPOSIUM KARYA SENI
was pleasantly surprised when Malaysia's most famous SENIMAN AGUNG P.RAMLEE DI HOTEL

Jins took a break after finishing Di Belakang Tabir, which was also his
final black-and-white film. He desired to continue his schooling. He
saw this as a way to advance in the quickly changing film industry. As
the industry began to embrace the technology to produce colour
films, Jins must have thought that things would never be the same
again. In 1970, he earned a Diploma in Motion Picture Technology
from the London Film School, and two years later, he graduated with
First Class Honours.
He worked with the Royal Malaysia Police to develop and direct Bukit
Kepong, a film on the Bukit Kepong episode, which was a chaotic
armed conflict between Malayan police and Malayan Communist
Party gunmen during the Malayan Emergency in 1981. The film, which
cost RM1.3 million to produce and earned RM1.7 million at the box
office, received eight awards at the 3rd Malaysia Film Festival the
following year, including Best Film. [4] In 2014, KRU Studios undertook
a restoration attempt on the picture.
17
18
In 2015, the father of three made another film industry first
when KRU Productions Prodigital Lab repaired his very
successful Bukit Kepong from its film reel and re-released it in
digital HD format in theatres. Bukit Kepong, which depicted
the story of a group of police officers and villagers in a small
Johor town and was first shown in 1981, won Jins the Best Film,
Best Director, and Best Actor awards.
He wanted to make a film about the events that led to the
assassination of British official J.W.W. Birch in Perak in 1875 for
much of his life. According to a press article, he began work on
such a film in 1992, but it was never completed. Jins revealed
intentions for an epic English-language film called The King of

contribution to the country's entertainment
industry, and his passing is a significant loss to the
industry. Jins has received various prizes and
distinctions throughout his life as a result of his
passion and dedication, including best actor and
best director on several occasions. During the 26th
Asian Film Festival in Bali, Indonesia, in 1980, Jins'

Jins' dedication and determination to learn at the age of 75 paid off when he
obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) on March 24, 2010, in conjunction
with UUM's 23rd convocation, at Universiti Utara Malaysia. In 2004, the 18th edition
of Anugerah Bintang Popular honoured him with the Veteran Artist Award trophy
for his significant contribution to enhancing the status of national art. In 2004, he
was awarded the Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN), a Malaysian federal honour for
exceptional service to the country, as well as the title Datuk.
He made cameo appearances in films outside of the Malay film industry later in his
career. Jins was noted for his commitment and worked well into his seventies. Jins
was elected to the Malaysian parliament's upper chamber, the Dewan Negara, in
2004. It was the country's first time an actor was elected to the Senate, and he
served two terms until 2011. During his time in the Senate, he frequently took part
in debates to defend the rights of artists and art advocates.
22
23
The royal houses bestowed numerous titles on him in
acknowledgment of his contributions to the cinema
industry. One of the most prestigious was the Yang di-
Pertuan Agong's Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM)
award, which included the title "Tan Sri". He was
honoured with the Anugerah Seniman Negara in
2009. His constant pursuit of change, challenge, and
brilliance has firmly established him as a renowned
and illustrious figure in the local film industry.

Retirement
Tan Sri Jins Shamsudin had retired from acting a few
years before he died. The passing of the legendary artist
was deeply felt by art industry activists, especially his
comrades-in-arms who described the deceased as an
inspiration to them in pursuing their ambitions. He is a
very disciplined actor and always takes care of nutrition.
Before his retirement, he had won many accolades and
became one of the legendary actors who had teamed up
with one of the legendary actors and directors of
Malaysia, namely Tan Sri P, Ramlee, whose many works
have been screened until now. He not only created a FIGURE 13: FORUM WARTAWAN DAN PENULIS

As a result, he was rarely seen attending

campaigned hard for the rights of movie employees.
Jins was a member of the Malayan Artists

Jins also proposes a variety of measures to prevent
filmmakers from forming harmful monopolies. He had
requested that the government pay attention to the
possibility for Malays to run their own films, reinforce the
legislation on foreign film entrance, and levy hefty import
tariffs on foreign films, among other things. Jins
Shamsudin should be one of the best examples of artists in
Malaysia because he has contributed a lot to give a
positive impact, especially in the field of acting.
On 1st March of 2017, the sad news about the death of Jins
Shamsuddin flooded in Malaysia. While having tea with his FiGURE 15: SOURCE - FINAS
family, he choked on his food. Realizing the situation, his WEBSITE
wife, Halijah Abdullah rushed him to the clinic.
Unfortunately, as soon as they reached the clinic, he was
announced dead. The whole situation remained as
something that cannot be forgotten by his whole family.

Conclusion
In conclusion, all the contributions and devotion of Jins
Shamsudin are a source of pride in the acting industry in
Malaysia because he once had an actor who had an award at
the international level. Today's young artists should emulate
him in order to further improve the quality of acting. All the
contributions made in the acting industry are a good indicator
that can be used to this day. His simple life set an example for
others who wanted luxury. Although he is a local artist, he also
used to fight for other artists to get pleasure. It is clear that the

Young artists who are new to the field of acting
should emulate him so as not to spoil the quality of
acting. The quality of Jins Shamsudin has embodied
the personality of a Malaysian artist who is
competitive to the highest level. Until now, his acting
shows are still shown abroad which will never be tired
to watch. The character that he brings has always
been the cause of his acting in the film to be the focus
of the audience. His ability in acting reflects the
country's ability to produce an actor of international
