1. Diagram 1 shows a quality control system where tins of milk with volume less than
the minimum requirement will be picked out.

Diagram 1

Table 1 shows four radioisotopes with their respective properties.

Radioisotope Physical state Type of radiation Half-life
Sodium-24 Liquid Gamma 15 hours
Phosphorus-32 Liquid Beta 14.3 days
Cobalt-60 Solid Gamma 5.27 years
Strontium-90 Solid Beta 28.5 years
Table 1

(a) What is meant by the half life?

..............................................................................................................................
[1 mark]

(b) Based on table 1, state the suitable properties of a radioisotope to detect the
volume of milk in a tin. Give a reason for the suitability of the properties.

(i) physical state

................................................................................................................
Reason

.................................................................................................................
(ii) Type of radiation

.................................................................................................................
Reason

................................................................................................................

(iii) Half -life

.................................................................................................................
Reason

................................................................................................................
[6 marks]

(c) Based on the answer in 1(b), determine the most suitable in table 1 to detect
the volume of milk in a tin.

...........................................................................................................................
[1 mark]

(d) In Diagram 1, tin P has required minimum volume. Between tin Q and tin R,
which tin will be rejected? Explain your answer.

(e) The half-life of sodium-24 is 15 hours.
Calculate the time taken for the activity of sodium-24 to reduce to 12.5% of its
initial value.

[2 marks]

2. (a) Diagram 2.1 shows an experiment to observe the pattern of the electric field
for two point charges.

Power supply

Diagram 2.1

(i) What is the function of the seeds? [1 mark ]

(ii) Suggest and explain modifications that can be made to the set up in
Diagram 2.1 to produce and display more clearly a stronger and
uniform electric field between two electrodes.
Your answer should include the following aspects:

• Shape of the electrode

• Size of the electrode

• Distance between the electrodes

• Magnitude of the power supply

• Size of the seeds [10 marks]

(b) Diagram 2.2 shows two electrical circuits, A and B consisting of identical
dry cells and light bulbs. The connecting wires in both circuits are made of
the same material and are of the same length.

Circuit A Circuit B

Diagram 2.2

Compare the brightness of the bulbs and the thickness of the connecting

wires. Relate the brightness of the bulb to the current in the circuit.

Relate the current in the circuit to the resistance of the connecting wire.

Hence, state the relationship between the thickness of the connecting wire to

its resistance. [5 marks]

(c) Diagram 2.3 shows the graph of potential difference, V, against
current, I, for a filament lamp.

Diagram 2.3

(i) Explain whether the filament lamp obeys Ohm's law.

(ii) What happens to the resistance of the filament when the current increases?

Explain your answer. [4 marks]
