Maand is the Rajasthan's most sophisticated style of folk music and is the most exclusive
contribution to the classical music of India. It has come a long way from the time it was
only sung in royal courts, praising of the Rajput rulers, and the local heroes. It was then
mostly sung either by nomadic performers or appointed court singers. It is considered close
to thumri and ghazal. The famous song Kesaria Balam is composed in Maand style.

This Rajasthani style of singing was originated back in the 10th and 11th century in Maand
area of Jaisalmer. Apparently, that is why it is named after it. The main instruments used in
‘Maand’ are kamaicha and cymbals

The famous artistes of Maand folk music are Allah Jilai Bai of Bikaner, Lalita Bai of
Kishangarh, the Jamila-Kulsum group from Jodhpur, Suraiyaa Begum from Jaipur, the
Rukma-Hakla group from Barmer, and the Hasan Khan Manganiyar group from Jaisalmer.

Mangi bai has been a proud winner of the State Award of Government of Rajasthan in
2007 and also titled as the ‘Maand Gayika’ by the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Academy in
2008 for her valuable contribution of Maand music in Rajasthan. She has successfully
propagated the Rajasthan’s musical culture at not just national levels but international
levels too, giving out numerous performances at these platforms which includes Apna
Utsav at Mumbai, Mahabharat Utsav at Kurukshetra, and the Maand Samaroh which was
organized by the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Academy
