Making Amazing
Harvesting the harvest
Every autumn, (usually from mid-September until around
mid-November in North America and March through June in Chile),
cranberries reach their peak in color and flavor and are ready for
harvesting. For growers, it is the culmination of 364 days of hard
work that get the berries ready to rise. The actual harvest time
is quick, typically only a few days, but it is a stunning process. In
fact, a cranberry harvest is one of the most beautiful and unique in
the world.
Cranberries were first picked by hand, then growers moved
to a dry harvesting technique, using a mechanical picker. Later they
revolutionized the process with a wet harvesting technique, the
primary technique used today. This cranberry innovation, the wet
harvest, dramatically improved the ability of farmers to efficiently
bring their crops to market, and allowed for development of the
cranberry industry we know today.

The Cooperative
At many companies, shareholders are anonymous and temporary. the ocean spray story
But a cooperative is unlike a typical company. Our growers are often part
of a family that has been caring for the same cranberry farm for several 31
generations. Similarly, most of our growers have been members of the
Ocean Spray Cooperative for decades. A visit to a grower will tell you most
of what you need to know about the importance of the Cooperative. For
them, the Cooperative is not just a part of their farm, but also a part of
their family. For them, it is a way of life.
As individuals, our growers are inventors, engineers, horticulturists and
small business owners running their family farms. The Cooperative brings
those individuals together to cooperate. Growers share farming practices,
pool resources, and work with each other to continuously improve cranberry
growing. This cooperative spirit extends well beyond the farm. At Ocean
Spray, employees are an extension of the farm, acting as our growers’
research and development group, marketing department, manufacturing
network, supply chain, and sales force. While grower families are part of
the Cooperative for generations, employees are privileged to be trustees of
the business for the time they work at the Cooperative.
At Ocean Spray, growers and employees work together,
collaboratively, to deliver cranberries and cranberry products from the farm
to the world. We all work together to ignite a passion for our cranberries.
As a cooperative, we are cranberry growers.
“The Ocean Spray Cooperative is not just a collection
of farms, it represents the basis for how we do business.
Growers and employees act together as one team,
bringing our fruit to consumers, and working hard
each day on behalf of the generations of families who
built this Co-op. That makes all the difference.”
