What is ICT?

Objectives of the Course

This module is intended for people who need to be able to
operate a personal computer, either as a user of computers, or
as knowledge and understanding for a career in the ICT
industry.

People credited with this module are able to:

· Start up and shut down a personal computer system using
standard and non standard methods.

· Change the configuration of a personal computer.
· Use personal computer operating system functions.
· Use operating system utilities.

The performance of all elements is to a standard that allows
for further learning in this area.

What is Computer Hardware?

• Computer Hardware is the physical part of the
computer system, the machinery and equipment.

• Parts of the computer “you can see”

Examples of Computer Hardware

Monitor: T.V. like screen used to show pictures and

words

CPU: Central Processing Unit this is where most of

the computer’s calculations take place. In terms of
computing power, the CPU is the most important
element of a computing system.

Keyboard: This device is used to type

information into the computer and contains the
numbers 0-9.

More Computer Hardware

Mouse: a small device, which you move across the top of

the desk to move the pointer or cursor on the screen.

Printer: used to make a paper copy of the information

into the computer.

Image Scanner: an electronic device that generates a

digital representation of an image for data input to a
computer

What is Computer Software?

• Computer Software are programmes that tell
the computer what to do.

Examples
•Microsoft Outlook (email, calendar, contacts)
•Microsoft Word-word processing programme
•Microsoft PowerPoint-presentation programme
•Microsoft Excel-work book programme used to
track, calculate, and analyze numeric data

need to know how each component works. Finally you look at how all the components
work together to achieve the desired end product or result.

• You can use the Regional and Language Options tool in Control Panel to

customize the way Windows handles dates, times, currency values, and
numbers.
To open the Regional and Language Options tool: Click Start, and then click
Control Panel.
• Click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options, and then click Regional
and Language Options.
• To change one or more of the individual settings, click Customize.
NOTE: The location selection that you make includes default display options
for the way dates, times, and numbers are displayed.

sample screen of how the new settings will look. If you are happy with the
way the screen looks you click on Apply which will accept the changes for
future use until it is changed again.

Install and Uninstall Software

Use personal computer operating system functions.

Installing Software

General Tips
• Make sure your computer meets the requirements of the programme, game,

or utility you are attempting to install.
• The manuals for the programme or the readme file located in the same

directory as the install commonly contain exact instructions on how to install
a programme.
• After installing or during the installation, a programme may need to install
other programmes, files, or utilities before it is able to run. If this is the case,
the programme will commonly prompt you to install the programme or you
may need to run a separate install before the programme can be fully used.
• When installing a programme, utility, or game, it is always a good idea first to
close or disable any other programmes that are running.
• After installing a new programme if it prompts you to reboot the computer,
do it.

Uninstalling/Removing Software

Removing Software You Installed
• As you use your computer, you would be installing software by yourself,

software that you use for work, games that you play, applications for easier
communication or file sharing with others online, and other such software.
• You would need to uninstall software that you do not use anymore. To do
this, you should go to your computer’s Control Panel and open the
programmes folder. A list of installed programmes will pop up. Click on the
name of the software you do not use anymore and then click uninstall.
