FOREWORD

English Form 1, Poem, News Break! Our handbook has been
crafted thoroughly with care and the purpose of helping
teachers to make Literature fun. It is important to make teaching
and learning Literature fun therefore we have created this
handbook to guide the teachers into helping the students fall in
love with Literature.

The handbook is categorized into three types of sections: Poem
Vocabulary, Literary Devices, and Poem analysis. These sections
contain four activities each where they are applicable in physical
learning settings and also virtual learning classrooms.

The handbook has also explained meticulously how each activity
can be done. Not only that as the handbook has also included
the content standard, learning standard, and learning outcomes
for the teachers to know which activity is suitable for their
classes. With that being said, the students’ levels of proficiency
have also been identified for each activity in the workbook.

It is intended with the hope that the teachers who utilize this
handbook will find it useful as a guidebook to help their
students love Literature even more!

READING

1.The teacher will distribute the photocopy of the poem to each of the pupils and
ask them to read aloud the poem.

2.After the pupils read the poem, the teacher will explain the poem to the pupils.
3.The teacher will ask the pupils to identify each of the certain vocabularies

from the poem.

1.The teacher will distribute display the QR code of the poem on the screen ask
the pupils to scan and read the poem.

2.After the pupils read the poem, the teacher will explain the poem to the pupils.

1.The teacher asks the pupils to go through the poem and ask them a few simple

questions:

a.What do you think this poem is about?

b.What do you understand about the poem?

2.The teacher will instruct the pupils to form and sit in a circle.

3.The teacher will get the pupils to pass the box filled with pieces of paper that

contain vocabulary from the poem around while the music is playing.

4. When the music stops, whichever pupil holds the box has to pick a vocab from the

box.

5.The pupils' task is to identify the chosen vocabulary from the poem and explain its

meaning.

WRITING

1. The teacher will provide the pupils with the poem for them to read.
2. The teacher has a short discussion with the pupils about the poem.
3. The teacher will get the pupils to work in pairs and instruct them to go through the poem
with their peers.
4. The teacher will ask each pair to pick 2 words.
5. Then, from the words they have chosen, the teacher will instruct them to identify and
underline the vocabulary from the poem.
6. After underlining, the teacher will ask each pair to construct at least 2 sentences using the
vocabularies identified.
7. The teacher asks each pair to share their sentences with their classmate.
8. Lastly, the teacher will discuss with them if they make any mistakes.

PHYSICAL

MIX & MATCH (30 minutes)

READiNG

1. First, the teacher distributes the photocopy of the poem to the pupils.
2. Then, the teacher will give the pupils 10 minutes to read and analyse the poem carefully.
3. After 10 minutes, the teacher will ask the pupils what did they understand about the poem
based on their understanding.
4. After the pupils have given their explanations, the teacher will distribute the matching
worksheet to the pupils.
5. The pupils will be given 20 minutes to complete the worksheet.
6. Once the pupils are done with the worksheet, the teacher will randomly pick a few pupils
to share their answers for the particular question that the teacher asks.
7. Finally, the teacher will give feedback on the pupils' work.

MIND MAP (30 minutes)

WRITING

1. First, the teacher distributes the photocopy of the poem to the pupils.
2. Then the teacher will give the pupils 10 minutes to read and analyze the poem carefully.
3. After 10 minutes, the teacher asks the pupils if they can guess what the poem is all about
and what the persona is trying to convey.
4. After the pupils are done giving their explanations, the teacher will explain the poem to
the pupils.
5. Then, the teacher will divide the pupils into pairs and give them the mind map worksheet
and ask them to complete the worksheet within 30 minutes.
6. After 30 minutes, the teacher will randomly pick a few pairs and ask them to present their
answers.
7. At the end, the teacher will give feedback to the pupils for the task they have done.

Paper Bag Poetry (30 minutes)

Speaking

1.After the discussion on the poem, the teacher will ask pupils to get into groups
of 4.

2.Before the activity begins, the teacher will distribute a copy of the poem per
group and identify the discussed literary devices and the elements from the
poem.

3.Each group will go to the front of the class and pick a paper from the paper
bag that contains the types of literary devices.

4.The group then needs to identify the phrase of the picked literary devices by
looking at the poem.

5.The group will be given a total time of 4 minutes to identify the phrase and
also to give a relevant explanation of the phrase.

6.If the chosen group does not manage to find the answers, this will give a
chance to the other groups in the class, they are able to answer the question
and will only receive the scores when given both appropriate answers and
relevant explanations.

7.The group that manages to get 12 points the fastest will win the game.

LS: 5.3.1 Respond imaginatively and intelligibly through creating simple stories and simple poems.
LO: At the end of the lesson, the pupils are able to answer at least 1 or 2 questions based on the poem
by choosing the correct phrase from the stanza that matches the literary devices.

ONLINE

Jeopardy (25 minutes)

Speaking

1.After the discussion of the poem, the teacher will open up the jeopardy
game to assess the pupils’ understanding specifically on the elements of the
poem and its literary devices.

2.Pupils will get in groups of 3, the discussion will happen in the main zoom as
it will be hard for the teacher to observe if they are in the break-out rooms.

3.At the same time, the teacher will open jeopardy website:

4.Or scan the QR code to go on the website.
5.Pupils will read the phrases on the scoring that are based on the poem.
6.The groups will be given 30 seconds to discuss between their group mates

to choose the correct literary devices or elements of poetry.
7.If the group does not manage to answer the question correctly, the other

groups do not get a chance to answer and the scores will not be given to any
of the groups.
8.The group that achieves the most points wins.

CS: 5.3 Express an imaginative response to literary texts.
LS: 5.3.1 Respond imaginatively and intelligibly through creating simple stories and simple poems.
LO: At the end of the lesson, the pupils are able to analyze each of the stanzas of the poem by answering
the question.

Physical

Gallery walk (40 minutes)

Speaking

1.The teacher will greet the pupils.
2.The teacher will segregate the pupils into 5 different groups.
3.Each of the groups will receive Mahjong paper and marker pens.
4.The teacher will assign each group a different stanza on a small piece of

paper.
5.Each of the groups needs to discuss the meaning of the particular stanza

and write down the meaning on the Mahjong paper within 15 minutes.
6.Each of the groups needs to paste the mahjong paper on the wall around the

class.
7.After that, each of the group members other than the group leader will be

moving to another group to listen to the other group presentation with a
different stanza. At the same time, each group leader will be staying and
presenting their groups’ findings to the other pupils from different groups.
8.The teacher will be going from one group to another group listen to the
leader's presentation.
9.Once all presentations finish, all the pupils will be going back to their own
group and the teacher will give comments to the groups.

Online worksheet (30 minutes)

WRITING

1.The teacher will greet the pupils.
2.The teacher will segregate pupils into different breakout rooms.
3.Each of the groups will receive 2 QR codes for the POEM and the live

worksheet.
4.Each of the groups needs to discuss among their group members.
5.Each of the group leaders needs to key in the answer in the blank box

provided in the live worksheet.
6.Once each of the groups had completed the worksheet, the leader need to

submit the live worksheet to the teacher's email.
7.The teacher will discuss the answer with the pupils once all the pupils had

finished answering and submitting the live worksheet.
