Friends of Billerica Recreation

Would you like to play a role in the continued success of our Recreation Department? We are currently seeking

individuals interested in joining our “Friends of Billerica Recreation” committee. This committee is an integral part

in ensuring our ability to grow our special events, and seek alternative funding sources to keep such events at a

minimum cost. Additionally, funds raised by the Friends are used to directly fund our Financial Aid/Scholarship

opportunities for residents in need. A commitment to becoming a Friend simply consists of attending occasional

meetings, and a willingness to volunteer at our special events. If you’re passionate about our department and

would like to be a part of continuing to take Billerica Recreation to the next level, please let us know! Those with

interest in learning more are encouraged to contact Recreation Director, Dave Grubb, directly.

FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge is one of three divisions by age group of the FIRST LEGO League

This year's FIRST LEGO League challenge is called CARGO CONNECTSM. Teams will learn about how cargo
is transported, sorted, and delivered to its destinations. As more demands are placed on transportation
systems, the children need to rethink how cargo is transported from place to place. We have the power
to build a path forward and invent the future of transportation. And it starts here, with you.

All FIRST® programs are built on a foundation of Core Values, celebrating discovery, impact, inclusion,
innovation, teamwork, and fun. They will help guide your team through their journey and show what fun

Public Speaking (Ages 10-14)

Your Voice: Public Speaking, Presenting, and Newscasting
In the modern workplace, public speaking and presentation skills are critical! We say it is never too early
to start learning these talents! Elementary and middle school students who learn skills like making eye
contact, using a loud voice, scanning their audience, speaking from notes and making persuasive
arguments will be confident and powerful speakers. Using fun and engaging activities to teach public
speaking and presentation can help make a sometimes scary task much less daunting. Our students write
and deliver informative and persuasive speeches on fun topics of their own choosing, learning how to
organize what they want to say and deliver it in a powerful and persuasive manner. Students also play
fun public speaking games, engage in mini-debates on kid-friendly topics and create a classroom
newscast featuring news anchors, weather reports, sports updates and movie reviews! Let's make public
speaking fun!
