2018 - Year in review
BY JODI WEINBERGER
EDITOR
Another momentous year in North Salem has ended, and it is time to reminisce and recap the most noteworthy stories of the past 12 months. Being a memorable story, of
course, does not guarantee it was a joyous occasion. Some stories, indeed, fall into that category, but for every inspiring moment, there were just as many heartbreaking and
frustrating ones. Here, we do our best to acknowledge all of those moments, good or bad.
Trees took down power lines and closed roads during several winter storms. FILE PHOTO
NYSEG power woes
e year kicked o with North Salem Supervisor Warren Lucas and Somers Supervisor Rick Morrissey ling a formal complaint against NYSEG with the new York
State Public Service Commission after power outages hit many homes over Christmas and New Year’s Eve in 2017. Power outages continued into the spring where several
powerful rain and wind storms took down trees and power lines.
What followed was a lot of meetings in attempts to hold the power company accountable for the outages and to come up with a path forward so the blackouts become
less frequent. ere were meetings with NYSEG management, meetings with former state Sen. Terrence Murphy, meetings in Albany, and meetings with the Public Service
Commission.
Here’s hoping that with all those meetings 2019 remains merry and bright...ly lit.
Maria Hlushko November election drama
Westchester County carried Pete Harckham (D-South Salem) to victory in the November election in the 40th State
Senate District race over two-term incumbent Terrence Murphy (R-Yorktown). Murphy topped Harckham by 8,049
votes in Dutchess and Putnam counties, but was bested by 10,170 in Westchester.
Locally, the race for town clerk took much longer to reach a conclusion. North Salem waited more than two weeks
for o cial results declaring Maria Hlushko the new town clerk; She pulled in just 120 more votes than her competitor,
Billy Morin. Hlushko will ll out the remainder of the one year un-expired term before the seat will again be put to
voters in 2019.

FROM PAGE 3 Pequenakonck Elementary School almost didn’t open on
time in September thanks to a warm, wet summer sparking
a mold outbreak at the school. But thanks to the fast-acting
work of the district leadership and Quality Environmental So-

hitch on Sept. 6. Behind the scenes, dozens of workers ripped
up carpeting and sheetrock, threw out books, toys and chairs
and scrubbed every surface of the building making sure it was
safe for students and teachers.

expert George Motz.

1988. It’s now owned and operated by Alice O’Leary Kerrigan, who

Googling around to nd unusual New Year’s traditions celebrated
around the world, I discovered a few interesting examples. In Ecua-
dor, it is customary to burn photographs that represent the past year
to banish negative events. It is also tradition to burn large scarecrows
stu ed with paper (credit card bills?) to bar bad fortune from follow-
ing into the New Year.
In Spain, the tradition is to quickly eat 12 grapes at midnight to
encourage good luck for the 12 months ahead. In Puerto Rico, old
timers throw pails of water out of the windows to drive away evil
spirits (or annoy downstairs neighbors).
In South American countries including Bolivia and Brazil, you can
keep your wishes for the New Year a secret by wearing red underwear
in the hope of nding love or yellow underwear for wealth and luck.
Whether you eat special foods or throw coins into a fountain or
wear your lucky socks, I wish everyone best wishes for a healthy and
happy 2019. Happy New Year!

in the middle of transitioning from oil to electric heat.
Outside, it’s nearing peak fall. Her home is situated

Several years ago, Finlay began researching how to
get the farm o the grid and called up Green Hybrid
Energy Solutions (GHES) Solar, based in White

Global warming is the motivation behind this
lifestyle overhaul, Finlay said. And though it wasn’t
the driving force, her electric bill and oil heating was
costing more than $20,000 a year.
“I’m really in it because the United Nations just

Allison Turcan is about as loyal as it gets when
it comes to Starbucks. She had worked her way up
to store manager of the chain co ee shop in Ma-
maroneck, when she decided to take advantage of
the company’s aptly-named “co ee break,” a pro-
gram that allows employees who’ve been with the
store for a decade to take a year of unpaid leave
knowing there’s a job waiting on the other side.
Following her passion for gardening, she signed
up for a year of work exchange with World Wide
Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF),
which places volunteers on sustainable organic
farms around the world. e volunteers are given
room and board in exchange for an opportunity to
work and learn the tools of the trade.
“It completely changed my whole perspective,”
Turcan said.“I wanted to re-create that experience.”
She thought through what she treasured about
that time: getting up early and heading out into
the elds with a group of like-minded folks, tak-
