Bring your family, bring your friends, and let’s make this a day to remember! Welcome Autumn at the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce Fall Festival and Car Show! I hope this letter finds you well. As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Jefferson Valley Mall’s existence in the heart of Yorktown Heights, it is with immense pride and gratitude that I address you today as the General Manager. This milestone offers us an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable journey of our beloved mall, which has evolved into a community hub that stands at the crossroads of history and innovation. In 1983, when Jefferson Valley Mall first opened its doors, it marked a new chapter in Yorktown Heights’ retail landscape. Over the decades, we’ve witnessed the ebb and flow of retail trends, and our mall has been an integral part of this transformation. Many of you might recall the stores of the past—anchor tenants like Macy’s & Sears, which were iconic in their own right. These stores became cherished memories for generations of shoppers, and they continue to hold a special place in our hearts. However, as the retail landscape continued to evolve, so did Jefferson Valley Mall. The merging of retail and experiential is a hallmark of our journey. We have transformed into a place where shopping is just one facet of the Jefferson Valley Mall experience. Our goal has been to create a space where you can not only shop but also engage, socialize, and create lasting memories. We’ve seen the emergence of tenants, like Launch Boutique, Princess by Tali, & BG Autographs and entertainment venues like Playconnection & Pizzazzles. We also now have community and wellness tenants, such as Yorktown Chamber of Commerce, Yorkville Sports/Sonic Sports, and Four Seasons Spa. alongside our fleet of nationals, including Dick’s Sporting Goods, Ulta Beauty, Versona, Express, H&M, Forever 21, and more. One of our greatest joys has been hosting a plethora of events that cater to the diverse interests of our patrons. From the Yorktown Chamber signature events that celebrate local businesses to College Fairs that empower young minds, Boo and Brew & Christmas in July gatherings that bring families together, and vibrant pop-up markets that showcase local artisans and entrepreneurs— each event has been a testament to the bonds we share with our community. In these four decades, we’ve witnessed the evolution of retail, and we are proud to say that Jefferson Valley Mall has not just survived, but has the lowest vacancy rate in over 20 years and is profitable once again, by embracing change. We have evolved from a traditional shopping destination to a place that encapsulates the essence of modern shopping, community engagement, and experiential entertainment. As we embark on the next chapter of our journey, we remain committed to serving as a gathering place for our community—a place where you can shop, dine, and connect with friends and family. The future holds exciting possibilities, and we are eager to continue this journey of growth and transformation with you. Thank you for your unwavering support over the past 40 years. We look forward to the years ahead and the many more memories we will create together at Jefferson Valley Mall. Happy Fall Festival KAREN TRENDELL PRESIDENT YORKTOWN CAHMBER OF COMMERCE MATT MILLER GM JEFFERSON VALLEY MALL Yorktown!

4 landscape isn’t much different eft, we see the Taconic Parkway snaking its to commuter distance to New York City. TOWN NEWS – OCTOBER 5, 2023 PAGE 11 BY EMILE MENASCHE EDITOR Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the Jefferson Valley Mall stands as a symbol of Yorktown’s suburban identity. As a structure, it’s also a monument to the way a once rural town (population around 2,700 in 1930 and 4,700 in 1950) evolved into the community of around 37,000 it is today. Two key factors — the automobile and the highway/ parkway system built to accommodate them — made it possible for people working in New York City and lower Westchester to live further north. Much of the the change took place after World War II, when the American economy was booming and American cities were seen as in decline. The relatively affordable properties north of the Croton Reservoir appealed to families from New York City that would have been priced out of the older, more affluent suburbs in lower Westchester. That 1950 population would nearly quadruple by 1960 (16,453) and by 1970 would top 28,000 — growing by nearly 600 percent in just 20 years. To make room for all those houses, the farms that once dominated the landscape were subdivided. Roads were added, expanded, and rerouted. The main artery bringing shoppers to the JV Mall Route 6, didn’t even follow its current route until the 1960s. Thomas Jefferson Elementary School was built in the late 1950s to accommodate the wave of young students moving to the area, including this writer, who came up from the Bronx in 1969. Yorktown has become a much more diverse and interesting place since then. town 1960: The transformation is well underway with housing developments and Thomas Jefferson Elementary School seen on the right. At this point, Gomer Street still runs straight down to Route 6, which follows its current path up to Baldwin Place. w Jefferson Valley’s rom farmland to ity machine SEE TIME MACHINE PAGE 12 PHOTOS COURTESY OF WESTCHESTER COUNTY

Looking at the landscape in a series of aerial photographs from the Westchester County archives shows just how much the terrain has changed. With Lake Osceola as a point of reference, we can see the area in 1926 (pre-Taconic Parkway), 1953 (the Taconic is there but the area remains rural), 1960 (the sub-divisions are starting to appear, but Route 6 is yet to take its modern path), 1970 (Route 6 is now on the By 1970, Route 6 would move south of Lake Osceola and the old road would become 6N. At the time, the new Route 6 section was a two-lane road occupying what is now the east-bound lane. The area that would house the JV Mall remained undeveloped. To the right, you can the the suburban subdivisions beginning to take shape. PAGE 16 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO YORKTOWN NEWS – OCTOBER 5, 2023 BY JANE AND WALT DANIELS CONTRIBUTING WRITERS If you love to be out in nature, every season is hiking season. But there’s something about the fall that makes many of us want to take advantage of our area’s diverse range of walking and hiking opportunities. Yorktown boasts about 60 miles of trails, more than any other municipality in Westchester County. There are hiking, walking, and biking opportunities for everyone to enjoy. Here are a few that are especially nice this time of year. Hunter Brook Linear Park – A white-blazed trail is a familyfriendly 1.8-mile walk along a stream to the bridge and back. Numerous opportunities exist for tossing sticks or small stones into the stream. For a longer hike of about 3 miles continue over a bridge around a loop. Access is off Fox Trail Lane from Hunter Brook Road. No bikes Turkey Mountain - A rugged hike up the white trail to a viewpoint rewards you with a sweeping view of the Hudson River. If the sky is clear, you can see the New York City skyline. Returning on the blue trail makes a 2.2-mile hike. The entrance to the park is on Route 118. No bikes North County Trailway - This handicapped-accessible multi-use trail has multiple places to access it. The wetlands are south of the Yorktown Highway Department parking lot and if lucky, turtles are visible swimming or sunning. Going north from the parking lot after a walk behind apartments, the trail goes through rock faces and is less traveled than going south.  Sylvan Glen - Interpretive signs tell the history of the quarry operations. There are remnants of quarrying operations along the trails. The 7.9 miles of trails offer multiple possibilities for hikes. One entrance is on Morris Lane off Lexington Avenue in Mohegan Lake. Bridge over the Taconic – Visit the only pedestrian bridge over the 104-mile Taconic State Parkway. Take the 0.2-mile pink-blazed Taconic Bridge Trail from the far end of the parking lot. View and wave to cars whizzing by before returning or venturing into Granite Knolls Park. Woodlands Legacy Field which is reached from Route 132. DID YOU KNOW? Trails in town-owned parks are maintained by volunteers from the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference under a legal agreement between the Trail Conference and the town that was signed in 2010. Maintainers are assigned a trail which they visit at least three times a year to cut back vegetation, refresh blazes, clear steps, boardwalks, and There’s something afoot this fall Whether you want a leisurely walk or a serious hike, Yorktown has a trail for you Proceeds from the sale of Walkable Westchester go directly to maintaining trails. PAGE 18 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO YORKTOWN NEWS – OCTOBER 5, 2023 BY BRIAN MARSCHHAUSER CONTRIBUTING WRITER Everybody has an opinion about pizza. How to eat it. What to put on it. What makes a good slice? To help settle some of these age-old pizza debates, we turned to a few experts from Yorktown’s favorite pizzerias: Anthony Romano of Romano’s, Francesco Picone of Maria’s Pizza, and Joe Giuliano of Yorktown Pizza & Pasta. To fold or not to fold — what is the best way to eat a slice of pizza? • Anthony Romano (Romano’s): Fold. No fork and knife. • Francesco Picone, (Maria’s): You gotta fold, even with the big slice. You definitely can’t use a fork and knife. (Maria’s is famed for its large house slices cut from a 3-footlong pizza.) • Joe Giuliano (Yorktown Pizza & Pasta): I don’t fold. I put a layer of granulated garlic, oregano, hot pepper, and grated cheese, and I eat it flat. What is your go-to spice/condiment? • Romano’s: We use grated cheese and oregano. • Maria’s: I put a little bit of everything on mine. I have a secret spice (Badia’s Complete Seasoning). This is good on everything. • Yorktown Pizza & Pasta: All of them. I get the works. When it comes to leftovers, is a slice better cold or reheated? • Romano’s: Reheated. • Maria’s: I gotta have it hot. I can’t do cold pizza. • Yorktown Pizza & Pasta: Cold, baby. What is the best way to judge a pizzeria’s quality? • Romano’s: Definitely a plain slice. • Maria’s: Sauce. It’s all about the sauce. Anybody can buy the cheese. • Yorktown Pizza & Pasta: The plain slice — that should be what everybody is judged on. Besides your own, what is the best slice of pizza you’ve ever had? • Romano’s: Growing up, there was a bakery in Queens called Volpe’s. That was the best slice I ever had. • Maria’s: I like wood fired pizza (pizza that is cooked in a brick oven). Wood & Fire in Pleasantville is really good. • Yorktown Pizza & Pasta: Sal’s of Mamaroneck. For Sicilian, it was Tom’s of Ardsley, which is closed now. What is the most underrated pizza topping? • Romano’s: Onions. They give a lot of flavor. • Maria’s: Red onion. • Yorktown Pizza & Pasta: Garlic. Because a lot of people don’t put that at the forefront. Do you have any secret menu items? • Romano’s: We have a pasta dish that people go crazy for — Rigatoni Ragusa. We also have lentil soup and a Toscana salad with arugula, roasted peppers, goat cheese, and honey. • Maria’s: No secret items. What you see is what you get. • Yorktown Pizza & Pasta: We have a few customers who have their own pies named after them. The Sal is a thin crust, well-done pie with garlic. We have a Fama pie. That is thin crust, no garlic, light cheese, well-done with oregano baked in, and half anchovy — but the anchovies have to be torn into little pieces. They can’t be whole. What is the most unusual request you’ve ever had for a pizza order? • Romano’s: I had somebody ask for ketchup on their pizza. • Maria’s: It used to be pineapple, but that’s not unusual anymore. We’ve been asked to make a “medium rare” pie or “well done but not burned.” Someone also asked if we served plain pizza. Does Burger King have a burger? Does a gym have a treadmill? • Yorktown Pizza & Pasta: A Hawaiian pie with honey on it.
