BRUCE APAR
I had a lot to write about. Members of the Holy Name So-
ciety who drank their lunches, builder’s schmoozing with local
pols, and Russell. I saved a whole chapter for him.

ere are many kinds of alcoholics. Some need a few blasts
to face the day, others just like their grog. Russell drank himself
into oblivion every day. I could only guess his demons. He’d
been in Vietnam, divorced, estranged from his children. Suicide
by the bottle is not all that rare.

All that winter long I wrote my barroom soap opera. Gary
and Jan’s baby wasn’t born with red hair. He had blue eyes and a
round face, same as Gary’s. So much for small town gossip.

Warren’s girlfriend left him, and the slick, tavern Romeo be-
gan hitting on Marcy. It wasn’t long before her jealous boyfriend
leveled Warren with a mere forearm. It was nice to see Warren’s
perfectly coi ed gray hair get mussed.

Two years later, Russel completed his suicide, freezing to
death in a car. He was the best of us all, going happily to his
death, while everyone else arrogantly attempted life, playing
parts in the human comedy, as if we could live forever.

“We have to limit mistakes on

“We have to be mature, not too
