Acknowledge sports accomplishments

To the editor,
Following the graduation of my two student-athlete children from John Jay High School in the mid-2000s, I have continued to follow the boys and girls basketball

teams each season. I make it a point to attend at least one game of each team every year.
While it has been clear to me that the athletic department and the John Jay Booster Club have continued to place greater emphasis on what I call the “testosterone

sports” (football, lacrosse, wrestling), I continue to be puzzled as to why the basketball team must compete in such a sterile environment.
Last week, I attended the John Jay-Brewster girls game in the JJHS gymnasium. For about the eighth-straight year, I wondered to myself whatever happened to all

the banners that adorned the walls highlighting the numerous accomplishments of the JJHS athletic teams. On many occasions, I have actually inquired as to the status
with whoever is there as “event sta .” In the beginning, the responses ranged from the banners are being “repaired,” or they are being “cleaned,” etc. e past couple of
seasons, the responses have basically been, “I don’t know.”

Yes, there are the banners acknowledging the retired numbers of JJHS past athletes, but that’s it. Where are the banners acknowledging the past league, section and,
most importantly, state champions in all sports? Anyone who has either played or visited gymnasiums throughout the county, region, state or country knows that the
overwhelming number of schools demonstrate pride in their athletic accomplishments by displaying this on their gymnasium walls. ere is also an element of intimi-
dation to this practice as well. High schools and their athletic departments would want opposing teams and supporters to feel a bit intimidated when they walk into
the JJHS gymnasium to take on the Indians. For gosh sakes, even tiny North Salem High School displays a banner across Hardscrabble Road: “You are entering Tiger
territory.”

Meanwhile, we have teams like the recent girls cross-country teams which have won the state championship with no visible acknowledgment either in the gymnasium
or, for that matter, on campus. Many other high schools work with their local township to display the state championships on signs strategically located in the town.

All of this begs the question: Is it simply a lack of support by the high school administration, athletic department and the John Jay High School Booster Club, or the
fact that the larger accomplishments have come from the “non-testosterone” sports?
