Making history

North Salem High School made national headlines with its groundbreaking
approach to holding a drive-in graduation and, among other things,
creating a special social distance hand to deliver diplomas to students.

NCOhloReTTHamSisALEM HS VALEDICTORIAN

We gave this accomplished student one more piece of homework to complete before the year was up with some questions about her experience in high school and what she plans to do after.
Here’s what she had to say:

What activities are you involved in at high school
and in the community?

I have tried to involve myself in our community as
much as possible. I am one of the Board of Education
representatives for my grade. I played on the varsity
tennis team and was a member of yearbook, newspaper,
and Model UN. I also have tutored younger students.
I have been a Girl Scout since I was 7. For my Gold
Award, I beautified a courtyard in the school so
the students could have a place to escape from the
crowded cafeteria and get work done in a stress free
environment.

What does it feel like to be named valedictorian?
Seeing myself up on the screen was a very emotional
experience. It is very rewarding to know that all of my
hard work has been recognized.

Where are you going to college, what will you
major in and how did you decide on that college and
major?

In the fall, I will be attending Duke University as
a biomedical engineering major. For as long as I can
remember, I’ve been fascinated by math and science.
Once when I asked for a microscope for my birthday,
I was mesmerized, carefully examining anything I
could fit on a slide. I still have this childlike wonder
when learning science, whether it is biology, chemistry,
or physics. As a biomedical engineer, I could use
my passion to have a profound impact on others. I
decided to continue my education at Duke because it
has countless research opportunities for engineering
students.

Here’s what she had to say:

roughout high school I participated in varsity

What does it feel like to be named salutatorian?
It is nice to be recognized for the hard work I put
into my academics throughout high school and I was
honored to be able to speak in front of my friends

Salutatorian gives me the motivation to work hard in
