some shape or form. Hence the theme: “Anything Goes; It’s 2020.”

Little did the event’s coordinators, pastry chef Patrice Lovell and
society veep Grace Zimmermann, know that folks would take the
instructions quite so literally.

After things seemed to be getting o to a slow start, the society
extended the entry deadline from midnight on Friday, Dec. 18, to

Lovell, a CIA grad and former Tusker, provided online baking

In the end, the online array of goodies wasn’t terribly extensive,
but it was truly creative.

Among them were a 2020 gingerbread cookie with melancholy
mellowcreme pumpkin eyes paired with an extremely cheery 2021

Besides o ering them bragging rights and the chance to do good,
the icing on the cake for bakers was a special “surprise” and a spot in
a slide show on the society’s Facebook page.

Despite this year’s many challenges, the holiday spirit appears to
be alive and well.

e week before Christmas had never been busier, Lovell said
while up to her elbows in our and butter at Sugar Hi, the Armonk
bakery, ice cream and candy shop where she works.

“It’s insane,” she gleefully admitted.
“Patrice and I wanted to carry on the festival’s tradition and share
a little holiday joy with the community,” said Zimmermann, adding
that she was so happy that harried folks managed to nd the time
to participate.

Looking back on the
2020 sports year

On Feb. 26, the Somers girls’ basketball team competed against Rye in the quarter nals of the
section playo s. When the buzzer sounded, it would be the last time a Tuskers team would see
action until Tuesday, Oct. 13—230 days later.

e world had turned upside down during that time. In order to lessen the spread of COV-
ID-19, schools went remote and the spring sports seasons were canceled. At e Somers Record,
we tried to maintain some normalcy during a stressed time, interviewing student-athletes about
their home workouts, their favorite sports movies and pump-up songs, and a host of other topics.
But everyone was eager to get back to normal, especially competition-starved student-athletes.

As local cases dropped to single digits over the summer, the return of interscholastic sports
seemed like a possibility. Sports considered to be high risk (football and volleyball) were sidelined
until March, but Section 1 schools moved forward with soccer, cross country, eld hockey, and
tennis in mid-October.To limit the spread, teams had to abide by a host of new rules: masks were
mandatory for players and coaches, players had to maintain distance on the sidelines and limit
contact in practice, and crowds were limited to just two people per home player.

ere were some hiccups, the new rules took some getting used to, and the games lacked a
raucous atmosphere—the student sections were severely missed—but for six short weeks, the
student-athletes experienced some normalcy in their lives in a year that was anything but normal.

The Roberts Wesleyan-bound Dani DiCintio was once again a lethal offensive weapon for the After being unable to field a team in 2019, Somers players returned to
injury-plagued Somers Tuskers, which overcame a slow 1-5 start to finish the season 14-3, the ice in 2020 with the combined BYSNS team—Brewster, Yorktown,
securing the No. 8 seed in the Section 1 Class A tournament. Though her career ended in a Somers, North Salem.
heartbreaking playoff loss to Rye, 2019-20 was a season to remember for DiCintio, who averaged
16 points per game on her way to scoring her 1,000th career point against Lakeland on Jan. 29.
She also averaged 4.5 assists and 2 steals and drained more than 50 three-pointers.
