Dad spotlight: CARMEN CICCONE

Father’s Day this year is incredibly di erent from past years
due to COVID-19 and New York on Pause restrictions slowly
lifting. e Katonah-Lewisboro Times reached out to local
dad Carmen Ciccone to ask his perspective on what it’s like
being a dad during these di erent and sometimes di cult
times.

“It’s been taxing, to say the least,” Ciccone said. “My wife
and I de nitely saw our kids having a hard time with home-
schooling and not being able to go any places.”

Being in sales, Ciccone said the rst couple of months he
was out of work but it has started to pick back up again.

He said that while adjusting was di cult, he’s been enjoy-
ing time with his family. To follow social distancing recom-
mendations, Ciccone, his wife Nancy, daughter Anna and son
Anthony have been going on family walks, taking drives and
playing sports outside in the backyard.

While his children have been getting accustomed to home-
schooling, he said that the family has been adapting because
it is unknown what the new norm is. His advice for being a
dad in the pandemic is to have an inventive mind. Ciccone has
been coming up with di erent activities for the family to stay
entertained in the house.

“Nobody’s been through this time so there’s no handbook,”
Ciccone said.

For Father’s Day celebrations, Ciccone said that the family
will be having “a serious barbecue” at home. He said he hopes
for a beautiful day so he and his family can enjoy the weather
together. He added that they will be deciding on a sporting
activity that everyone can participate in.

“Improvise is the new word,” Ciccone said.

Deliver gifts.

Take a few cues from the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus and plan to drop gifts
and run. Seniors and people who have compromised immune systems are at
a higher risk of contracting contagious illnesses. While it may be tempting to
visit your father or grandfather in person, even a short visit could put his health
at risk. Instead, leave gifts outside the house. For added fun, hide the gifts and
provide scavenger hunt clues.

Dine out at home.

If dining out was something you typically do on Father’s Day, replicate the
experience at home. Try to recreate Dad’s favorite meal from the restaurant he
loves or see if that restaurant o ers curbside pickup. Transform the dining table
into a restaurant table, or take the meal outdoors for some al fresco fun. Let kids
