‘We’re doing the people’s work’

Town Hall remains open, ready to assist residents

BY BOB DUMAS
EDITOR

e Town Hall remains open and the

Carmel town government continues to

do “the people’s work” in the face of the

coronavirus pandemic.

At last week’s Town Board meeting

(which was closed to the public but could

be watched on TV or the town website),

members challenged the assertion that

some residents have made on social media

that the town government has been unre-

sponsive and not proactive during the crisis.

“To say this board is not showing the

same concern as any other town board

is absolutely ludicrous,” said Council-

man Mike Barile. “ e building is open;

we are on the front lines. [Councilman]

Frank [Lombardi] is taking questions

from anyone and everybody.”

Barile, who is a contractor by trade, said

he’s found that an open government was

not always the case when he’s attempted

to do business in other communities.

“Because of the business I’m in, I go to PHOTO COURTESY OF TOWN OF CARMEL

County should discourage visitors

To the editor,
Last night, I listened live to the Legislature’s rst meeting since the emergency order was extended.

Shockingly, not one mention was made of the COVID-19 outbreak other than to acknowledge that
we are in uncharted territory. No legislative business was taken up related to the county’s response to
the pandemic. I am simply gob smacked.

e public health commissioners, legislators and county executives of Orange, Sullivan and Greene
counties have all issued statements discouraging travel into their counties from the downstate epicen-
ter of the COVID outbreak. Putnam is even closer to the epicenter, and far more vulnerable because
of our easy accessibility by rail and roadway.

Please, for the health and safety of your constituents, stop operating in a vacuum. Look to the ex-
ample of other counties that clearly are working in smart, e ective coordination. Issue press statements
discouraging short- and long-term visits into Putnam. Our local healthcare system is not yet fully
prepared to deal with illness among our own residents—we don’t need to be dealing with sick visitors,
and we don’t need those visitors spreading the virus. Discouraging visits to Putnam is very low hanging
fruit in our collective e ort to atten the curve.

is recipe for “Roasted Banana Co ee Cake” from “Simply Scratch” (Avery) by Laurie McNa-
mara includes bananas, making it an ideal addition to the breakfast table. e author suggests roasting
the bananas helps to perfect their texture without having to wait for the natural ripening process.

Roasted Banana Coffee Cake

Serves 8

8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted 1 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder
2 bananas 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
3/4 cup chopped pecans 1 cup granulated sugar
3 tablespoons dark brown sugar 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 cup sour cream
1 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose our 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter a 9-inch round cake pan with the 1 tablespoon room temperature
butter and dust with the granulated sugar and tip out any excess.

Place the bananas on a small rimmed baking sheet and roast for 15 minutes. Remove and set aside to
cool.

In a small bowl, combine the pecans, brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
Sift the our, baking soda, baking powder, and nutmeg through a ne-mesh strainer into a medium bowl.
In the bowl of a stand mixer tted with the paddle attachment, beat together the butter and sugar on
low speed until light and u y, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula, then add the roasted bananas, sour cream and vanilla.
Beat until incorporated.
With the mixer running on low speed, spoon in the our mixture and mix until just combined.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Sprinkle evenly with the pecan
topping. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean with a
few crumbs attached.
Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
