PAGE 2 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – DECEMBER 07, 2023 BY JESSICA JAFET CONTRIBUTING WRITER Nestled on a rolling farm in North Salem, come discover the idyllic apple orchard that has been transformed into a spectacular, illuminated holiday forest that twinkles under the winter moonlight— with over 800,000 lights that flicker in sync with music, all to be enjoyed while walking along a guided path.  For the third year in a row, Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard, a favorite destination for farm-fresh produce, pastureraised meats, local dairy products, pumpkin patches and pick-your-own apples, has turned its property into a must-visit, Holiday Festival of Lights—an attraction that is becoming a seasonal tradition for kids and grownups alike, from Northern Westchester, New York City, Connecticut and beyond.  Corinne Covino, whose family has owned the farm since 2011, is extremely proud of the unique, fantasy-world of lights that has been created. “There are drive-through light shows around, but there is nothing like this in the area,” she said. “We are the only half-mile-long, walk-through experience.” Upon entering, guests will see trees lit up in a rainbow of colors as they proceed under a sparkling tunnel of lights, then meander along a trail to take in Candy Land and a variety of themed installations like “Under the Sea” and other whimsical creatures that are aglow in lights. Christmas trees, festive decorations, along with light-changing orbs and an interactive light-up display area for kids create an ambience that will ignite the holiday spirit in anyone who enters the enchanted space.  The brilliant arrangements took about five weeks to set up and are sure to dazzle, according to farm manager Greg Rotter, who manages the light crew for the festival. “It is a one-of-a-kind experience in the region,” Rotter said. “There are a lot of photo opportunities and so much variety in the sections we created.” The staff encourages families to immerse themselves in the magic and perhaps find the perfect backdrops for their holiday photos. Depending on how long visitors decide to linger, the walk takes about 30-45 minutes, and the farm has set up fire-pits and Adirondack chairs for hanging out. Hot mulled wine, beer, cider, hot cocoa, apple cider donuts and more are available for purchase. The Festival of Lights runs Nov. 17 through Dec. 31, weekdays and weekends 4:00 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at harvestmoonfarmandorchard.com; event information is also on Instagram: @ harvestmoonorchard. SUBURBAN WINES & SPIRITS Westchester’s Fine Wine & Spirits Destination Tasting Notes SPONSORED BY 379 Downing Drive • Yorktown Heights, NY • 914-962-3100 www.suburbanwines.com • FREE Same Day Delivery (*Restrictions Apply) PAGE 18 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – DECEMBER 07, 2023 Pop! ’Tis the season, and there is simply no wine more festive than bubbly. Fortuitously, the variety of sparklers has never been broader—with quality right in step—at multiple price points. Here are some sub-genres of bubbly that are enjoying attention they deserve. Hipster Fizz, Anyone? The so-called “natural wine” movement remains niche-y, but the natty-wine producers’ conscious lack of manipulation has earned them a cultish following. Within that umbrella, pétillant naturel wines — aka pét-nats — are made in a manner that predates the traditional method used in Champagne. Rather than induce a second fermentation in the bottle to create the bubbles, makers of pét-nat simply bottle the wine before the initial fermentation has ended. The result is softly fizzy, usually hazy, and sometimes a bit funky. Distribution is spotty, but when a wine shop does carry any pét-nats, chances are they are on top of the trend and have picked a good one. Italy’s Pink Coattail Prosecco Rosé is a modern marketing success story. Think about it: an Italian wine region decided to use a French term for its official pink wine. Originally, Prosecco was made using only the (white) Glera grape. However, as many producers were having success with sparkling pink wines as well, the political-economic wheels turned et voilá—Prosecco Rosé was born just in time for New Year’s Eve of 2020, greasing the way for even more sales. To their credit, the Prosecco Rosés have met expectations, delivering a similar light, easy-drinking style, leaning more to berries than classic Prosecco’s apple/pear. Cava-licious In Spain, the national bubbly, Cava, dates back to 1872. Based on indigenous varieties Xarel-lo, Parallada and Macabeo, Cava is drier than Prosecco and has always been a more hands-on product, fermented in the bottle like Champagne. Attention to craft is arguably peaking in Spain now as the Cava designation has spawned two more official sub-genres. “Clàssic Penedès” highlights the geographic region where Cava was first made and boasts 100% organic production. “Corpinnat,” meaning heart of Penedès, features 11 top-quality producers, who guarantee the entire production process, from certified organic viticulture to estate vinification, aging, and bottling. The best Cavas offer firm effervescence, mild acidity and a pleasant, slightly earthy flavor profile. Vive Champagne (& Crémant) Back in France, two trends are worth tracking. One is the increasing stateside supply of “grower Champagne,” made by a small, hands-on producers. Certainly the large brands like Mumm, Clicquot, Roederer, et al make fine examples of the classic toasty/caramelly bubbly; but grower Champagnes can be looked to for more distinctive personality. The other is the well-deserved recognition of the crémants of France. Made by the same méthode as Champagne, but not within that region, crémants can be stylistic ringers for “real” Champagne at half the price. You can find excellent ones under $25 from the Loire Valley, Bourgogne and Alsace. Sweet Finish Don’t dismiss two other Italian bubblies just because they are sweet. Peachy Moscat d’Asti and raspberry-ish Brachetto d’Acqui are ideal for the holiday season because they complement many desserts without being unctuous. Bill “Tish” Tisherman, a longtime Bedford resident and former editor of Wine Enthusiast and Beverage Media, develops wine tastings and events via his website, wineforall.com. DECEMBER 07, 2023 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 19 BY JESSICA JAFET CONTRIBUTING WRITER As the winter and holiday season gets underway, Nadine’s Restaurant in Yorktown is ready to celebrate with its valued customers in traditional Austrian style. The Schienle family, longtime Yorktown residents who took over the business in 2018, announced it will welcome chef Stefan Bahr to the restaurant’s kitchen on the weekends in January and February. Bahr is an experienced chef who has worked in Austria, Switzerland, Africa, and is notably the former executive chef at Charlie Palmer’s Metrazur in New York City.  According to Christian Schienle, bringing a guest chef like Bahr to prepare authentic Austrian dishes will be a truly special experience for diners. “I think it is a little bit of an underrated cuisine,” Schienle said. “A lot of people are not familiar with Austria and believe the food is always heavy, which isn’t true—it is very refined and the cuts of meat are very different than in the United States.” The owners are excited to introduce a variety of traditional Austrian desserts during the holiday season, Schienle added. Named “Nadine’s” after Pamela Schienle middle name, the restaurant follows in the tradition of excellence that has been exemplified at Sel et Poivre, the Schienle’s delightful French bistro located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and in business for more than thirty years. With a cozy bar area, an outdoor beer garden and fire pit, Nadine’s is the perfect meeting place to gather and toast the season, and then enjoy a delicious Europeanstyle meal. Sip one of Nadine’s many specialty cocktails, enjoy some Austrian Schnapps, or taste an aromatic glass of Glühwein (the hot, spiced, mulled red wine that is a traditional holiday favorite.  Partake in the tastes of Austrian, German and French cuisines, with appetizers like French onion soup, escargot, pierogis or a hot pretzel, and entrees like Jägerschnitzel, Blue Crab ravioli, Wienerschnitzel (breaded pork), Sauerbraten (a traditional German roast of heavily marinated meat) and many more specials during the cold months.  For private parties and functions, the spacious indoor dining room at Nadine’s is available to rent—with an eager staff who will help create a memorable event for any occasion. And for those who prefer to entertain at home, the restaurant offers catering services; its chefs will prepare delicious dishes for your holiday parties and gatherings. Give loved ones the gift of a wonderful meal with gift cards that can be purchased from Nadine’s. The proprietor is especially grateful to all the customers who come to enjoy a meal at Nadine’s. “We want to send season’s greetings to all of our loyal customers and thank them for their support; we couldn’t do it without them,” Schienle said.  Top Austrian chef comes to Nadine’s Restaurant PHOTOS COURTESY OF NADINE’S RESTAURANT Nadine’s Restaurant 715 Saw Mill River Road Yorktown nadinesrestaurant.com 914-962-4298

PAGE 24 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – DECEMBER 07, 2023 ensures that each board or table I create is unique and one-of-a-kind. How do you pick or decide what goes on your boards? When it comes to creating a charcuterie board, I always consult with my clients to find out what meats and cheeses they prefer. From there, I add a range of additional items to enhance the board’s appearance and flavor. If you’re unsure, don’t worry – I’m happy to offer recommendations and guidance. We also like to keep our meats and cheeses seasonal. For instance, during the holidays, cranberry cinnamon goat cheese is a perfect flavor to incorporate. What’s your best advice to those who want an impressive charcuterie spread but have no clue on what they want or where to start? Order from me, of course! Just kidding. Start with the cheese as your foundation. Arrange it on the board and then add in the fruits. Finally, fill any gaps with meat. Don’t be afraid to get creative. Remember, the key to a beautiful cheese board is creativity—the more layers, the more impressive! Connect with Kayleigh at [email protected] or call her at 914-879-2949 for your charcuterie dreams. BY BOB DUMAS EDITOR AT LARGE Anthony Edwards was having a hectic day... as usual. But he still found time to call Hudson Valley Living back and talk about his upcoming show at the Paramount Hudson Valley Theater in Peekskill. “My voicemail gets filled up quickly and I have to delete it at the end of every day,” he said with a sigh. Edwards is half of the Edwards Twins, an act he shares with his twin brother Eddie, and whose relentless touring has earned them the label of the country’s “premier celebrity illusionists.” “We are hardly ever home,” said Edwards, who handles the publicity for the duo, while Eddie was in Las Vegas working as a solo act. “We do close to 300 shows a year.” The twins were born in Burbank, Calif. near NBC Studios.   From early on they were enamored with TV and its celebrities and would take every opportunity to sneak onto the NBC lots and watch the taping of now legendary programs such as “The Sonny and Cher Show”, “The Carol Burnett Show,” and “Laugh In.” Back at home, the brothers would memorize the skits they’d observed and then play together mimicking the stars. Billed today as “The Ultimate Variety Show,” the duo now features more than 75 impersonations of stars such as Sonny & Cher, Billy Joel, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, Rod Stewart, Bette Midler, Barbra Streisand, Tom Jones, and even Andrea Bocelli. But the Edwards Twins not only sound like those who they impersonate, they look like them as well thanks to the magic of Hollywood-grade makeup and state-ofthe-art prosthetics. “Eddie can spend up to six hours in the makeup chair getting ready,” Edwards said. The Edwards Brothers have been seen on shows such as “The Tonight Show,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “The Today Show” and, “Ellen.”  They’ve sold out shows all around the world including in Singapore, Miami, Aruba, Japan, China, and the Bahamas. Eddie Edwards also appears in the Netflix program “The Kominsky Method” with Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin, where he portrays Barbra Streisand. Carol Burnett played a major role in the twins’ success. When Eddie was performing on the premier of her TV show, she suggested that the two brothers unite and do a show together. They took her advice and started to perform their own star-filled spectacular called “Celebrities on Stage,” where Eddie performs as Barbra Streisand, Cher, and Bette Midler. “Carol is just like you think she would be—she is the nicest, sweetest person,” Edwards said. “Actually, at first, she didn’t even realize we were twins. She thought we were the same person until we met her backstage. When she found out, she said, “You two have to combine forces. You’ll take America by storm.” The show coming to the Paramount is called “The Ultimate Christmas Variety Show.” Edwards said it’s similar to their regular show but will feature an array of Christmas songs. “All these women [we portray] have all had Christmas albums out so we will be doing songs from those,” he explained. Critics have gushed over the Edwards Twins. People magazine wrote, “They bring such love and attention to recreating celebrities, that in many ways they are better than watching the real thing.” There are still tickets available for the Paramount show. Go to www.paramounthudsonvalley.com to purchase yours or call 914-739-0039 for more info. PAGE 26 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – DECEMBER 07, 2023  The holidays are peak shopping time, but it’s not just consumers who are ready to take advantage of what the season has to offer. Fraud surges during the season. “The holiday deals have already begun, but buyer beware— not all of those great deals you see online are legit.   Because if the online shopping season has started, it means that online scam season has officially begun, too,” says Kathleen BenedettiFisher, AARP New York’s Associate State Director for Community Outreach.   AARP New York is amping up its campaign to make consumers – young and old – aware of typical holiday scams and the latest methods crooks are using, whether it’s online, on the phone or in the mail. “We work very hard to educate older New Yorkers about fraud and scams, as well as other issues important to the 50-plus,” Benedetti-Fisher says. “Because the more educated you are about what’s going on, the more confident you will be when you get one of those phone calls, text messages, social media posts or emails—and we all do.” There are simple steps you can take to stay a step ahead of the online grinch this holiday shopping season.   Learn how to proactively spot scams or get guidance if you’ve been targeted. Shoppers can sign up for AARP’s alerts with the AARP Fraud Watch Network, which provides free information to protect yourself and your family from scams and fraud. Through the network, you can learn about scammers’ methods, red flags, listen to podcasts, sign up for biweekly “Watchdog” alerts, and check out scams happening in your area on the scam-tracking map. To register for AARP’s Fraud Watch Network, go to: www.aarp.org/ fraudwatchnetwork. Or call 1-877-908-3360 to speak to a fraud specialist. Scammers are skilled at creating slick ads and professionallooking websites and for minimal cost they can force them into your feed. According to the Federal Trade Commission, $2.7 billion in reported fraud losses have been tied to social media since 2021 and 44% of those came from fake sales. Look out for any online sales that are too good to be true; experts say to be suspicious of anything marked down by 55% or more. Also, be wary of any product or websites that offer popular or hard-to-find products at a steeply discounted price. Purchasing products on these sites can lead to shoddy products being delivered or receiving nothing at all. Worse, the site could steal your payment information or upload credential-stealing malware onto your device. Type – don’t click. The safest place to shop online is with retailers you trust by using their app or typing their web address into your browser rather than clicking on a link from a text, email or online ad. Also, know that the unbelievable deal a social media contact messages you about is truly not to be believed. Fraud criminals are experts at hacking social media accounts and one of the first things they do is send out fake offers to a victim’s friends and family. Phishing schemes are more common now. Such scams typically involve fraudulent emails requesting updated payment methods or personal information. This is also the time when people make year-end donations. Check the charity out before you donate on charitynavigator.org or give.org. Here are some additional tips to keep you safe during the holidays: · Use a credit card when shopping online. · Make sure to check your statement for suspicious transactions. · File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov or call  877- 382-4357. The New York State attorney general’s office and/ or the state  consumer protection  office are also options to report fraud. For more information, visit aarp. org/local. DECEMBER 07, 2023 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 27 Winter begins on December 21, 2023, and ends on March 19, 2024. Many people lament the arrival of winter, perhaps thinking the colder temperatures and shorter hours of sunlight will compromise their chances to have fun. Even though particularly chilly thermostat readings or stormy conditions can hamper some plans, when people dig deeper they may find that even the coldest days present opportunities for enjoyment. When winter begins, the following activities can make for an entertaining way to celebrate the arrival of the season. • Build a snow creation. Use the first significant snowfall of the season to organize a snowman, snowwoman, or snow-animalmaking event or contest. Waterproof gloves are a necessary piece of equipment, as are buckets for moving snow, shovels, carving and shaping tools (which can be plastic cutlery), and accessories to dress up the final product. • Go sledding on the best hills. Sledding is a popular wintertime activity that doesn’t require too much equipment. Sleds can be purchased at sporting goods stores or toy stores. Sledders of all ages should consider wearing helmets to protect against injury if they will be traversing especially steep hills. • Host a winter block party. Many cities and towns across North America participate in Winter Fest events, which run the gamut from food and craft festivals to sporting events. Individuals can take cues from these type of activities and plan neighborhood festivals right on their streets. Neighbors can wheel out their fire pits or utilize outdoor propane heaters to keep spots cozy. Hot cocoa and cider stations and warm treats can keep everyone from feeling too cold. Electric slow cookers can keep everything from soups to chilis to stews warm and participants can enjoy a buffet of hearty foods. • Visit an ice rink. Whether a rink is indoors or outside, ice skating is a quintessential wintertime activity. Skaters of all skill levels can take to the ice and enjoy some exercise and laughs. Check local rink schedules to take advantage of open skate times when hockey games or practices are not dominating the ice. • Mark the winter solstice. The winter solstice, also known as the start of astronomical winter, is the shortest day of sunlight on the calendar. It occurs when either of the Earth’s poles reaches maximum tilt away from the sun. In the Northern Hemisphere, this occurs on December 21, 2023. Because there will be only roughly seven hours of daylight, take steps to make the fact that the sun will set at its earliest a little easier to swallow. Kids can run around outdoors with glow sticks, while adults can deck their homes in twinkle lights if they are not decorated for Christmas. Lanterns, campfires and candles can be lit, and everyone can gather outdoors Fun ways to enjoy the start of winter to chat and socialize. Winter begins on December 21, 2023, and there are plenty of ways to celebrate this fun, if sometimes frigid, season. This article was provided by Metro Creative Connection.
