Illuminate Somers winners lit up the town
e following is from the Somers Lions:
e Somers Lions would like to thank all those who entered the Illuminate Somers Light Decorating Contest and all those in the
community who braved the threat of rain to participate in the Parade of Lights. Somers certainly has holiday spirit. It is di cult to
drive into any of our many communities and not see multiple homes that were meticulously illuminated. It was Lion Herb Reimann’s
vision that Illuminate Somers could be a way to give back to the community and we certainly felt his presence with us during our
caravan of more than 130 Somers residents who all got to share in that joy this season together. We again asked registrants to
illuminate the charity of their choice, so without further delay below are your 2018 Illuminate Somers Winners:
1st Prize (Outside): Guyot Family illuminating 1st Prize (Indoor): Aloisio Family illuminating ASPCA
Blythedale Children’s Hospital Honorable Mentions (outdoor): Juan Family, Yovane Family illuminating

Congratulations to all! Our whole community is the real winner because of the time and e ort that everyone puts into
decorating their homes. ank you!

large plaque.
“ ere was a great turnout by his former teammates and wrestlers he
coached throughout the years,” Ron said. “Seeing the support from his past
and present wrestlers during the ceremony showed the impact that he has
had on their lives.”
Dennis had been on the Tusker sidelines for 27 years before coaching
Mahopac for the last eight. He also was a team captain with his brothers
Ron and Vic with the Tuskers back in the 1970s. Dennis, a Somers resident,
also became the winningest dual meet coach in Section 1 history, earning his
422nd career win on Jan. 7 against Brewster.
Ron, who took over the Somers program four years ago, wrestled for Den-
nis at Somers.
“It has been a lot of fun coaching at the same time as my uncle,” Ron said.
“Our teams attend each other’s tournaments and we scrimmage together. I
pick his brain and observe him, trying to learn as much as possible. I see the
bonds that he has made with wrestlers, coaches and o cials within the wres-
tling community and it is very inspiring to see the impact he has had on so
many people.”
Mahopac won the tournament and had ve champions.
A rebuilding Somers team performed admirably, placing eighth overall and had
two wrestlers nish second: Matt Russo (106 pounds) and Michael Rivera (220
pounds).
“Overall, we wrestled how I expected and we nished in the middle of the pack,”
Ron said. “ e team is improving slowly but surely, which is our goal.”
Zach Lupinacci, however, impressed Ron the most in a tough 145-pound weight
class. He battled with Mahopac’s Tyler Roa in the semi nals, but lost a tight 4-3
match. Lupinacci came in third, defeating Beacon’s Ryan Rabenda by pin in 2:22.
“He made the move down to 145 and looked tough,” Ron said. “He has been
working hard and is improving a lot.”
omas Gall was fth at 195 pounds. Peter Kim placed sixth at 152. A.J. D’Orazio

UnWined Winebar
Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve
one’s ability to focus on a task. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony / Networking
A 2011 study published in the journal “Cognition” found Welcome UnWined Winebar to our Somers Community
that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged Ribbon Cutting ~ Networking Event
task. e study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus Wednesday January 16, 2019
on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under vari- 6:00pm - 9:00pm

breaks or diversions. e switch group and non-switch group Price: Includes Tapas ~ Cash Bar

while performing the task. e switch group was the only $10 non-member

ment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the
digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance Where: UnWined Winebar
declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. Somers Commons Shopping Center
However, the performance of those in the switch group did
not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the 80 US-6
digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the Baldwin Place, NY 10505
experiment. e researchers behind the study concluded that Somers Chamber of Commerce - Somerschamber.com
the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain
is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance
will actually su er if it must maintain prolonged attention on
a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot
on their plates may see their performance improve by taking
frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
