SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 3 Estate Planning Isn’t Just for the Elderly: Five FAQs About Long-Term Care Planning Long-term care planning plays a key role in any comprehensive estate plan, especially for New York residents. This sensitive and often complex process generates many questions and requires careful thought and understanding. Addressing these questions will provide clarity and guidance for those navigating this process. WHY DOES LONG-TERM CARE PLANNING MATTER IN AN ESTATE PLAN? Long-term care planning prepares you for potential future scenarios like incapacity or long-term care needs (i.e., nursing home / home care). When you plan ahead, you can decide on the care you receive and manage your assets, even if you have lost the ability to make decisions. WHICH DOCUMENTS ARE VITAL FOR LONG-TERM CARE PLANNING? An Irrevocable Medicaid Asset Protection Trust, power of attorney and a healthcare proxy are crucial components of a long term care plan. WHAT PURPOSE DOES A LIVING WILL SERVE IN LONG-TERM CARE PLANNING? A living will is a document where you express your desires regarding end-of-life care. It applies if you become terminally ill or permanently unconscious and lose the ability to communicate treatment decisions. HOW DOES AN IRREVOCABLE MEDICAID ASSET PROTECTION TRUST CONTRIBUTE TO LONG-TERM CARE PLANNING? The Medicaid Asset Protection Trust allows you to proactively take steps to protect your assets from the cost of long term care while also avoiding probate for the assets titled to the Trust. WHAT FACTORS SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING SOMEONE TO MAKE DECISIONS ON MY BEHALF? You should select someone who is trustworthy, responsible and capable of handling the required tasks. You should consider their willingness to serve in this role, their understanding of your wishes and their ability to make potentially tough decisions. Although planning for the future might seem intimidating, taking these steps can provide peace of mind, knowing you are ready for whatever lies ahead. Contact us today for a consultation. SUBURBAN WINES & SPIRITS Westchester’s Fine Wine & Spirits Destination Tasting Notes SPONSORED BY 379 Downing Drive • Yorktown Heights, NY • 914-962-3100 www.suburbanwines.com • FREE Same Day Delivery (*Restrictions Apply) PAGE 4 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 When I am asked “What’s your favorite wine?”, my answer is always simple, if not exactly precise: “It depends on the season.” Over the summer, especially when outdoors, my “favorite” wine needed to counter the heat, so I was happily soaking up refreshing, light rosés and crisp, cold Sauvignon Blancs. With September on the calendar and autumn at hand, my palate tilts toward reds. Red wine is naturally fuller-bodied and more intensely flavored than white wine because of how it is made: red grape skins, which tend to be thicker than white, are given longer maceration time, imparting more oomph and texture. White and pink wines get shorter skin contact, avoiding any tannic roughness but also leaving them less intense overall. Rather than recommend a single wine for the impending falling temperatures, I’d like to shine a light on a grape: Grenache, aka Garnacha in Spain and Cannonau in Italy. Planted extensively around the globe, Grenache’s spiritual home remains France’s Rhône Valley, where it shares a stage with Syrah as a headliner, plus a slew of ot her varieties. Naturally modest in acid and tannin but high in sugar, Grenache can be especially high in alcohol when fermented to dryness. For that reason, it is often blended with other varieties, with Grenache’s high potency being tempered while still contributing generous flavor, both in terms of fruit (black cherry, raspberry, strawberry) and spice (cinnamon, black pepper). In short, the grape variety Grenache plays well with others. Mediterranean & More Grenache’s iconic combination is with Syrah and Mourvèdre, commonly dubbed a Rhône-style blend. In fact, official Côtesdu-Rhône wines can feature over a dozen grapes (including some white). For a vivid demonstration of French terroir at work, compare a basic Côtes-du-Rhone (most priced in the $12-$25 range) to a Châteauneuf-du-Pape ($50 and up); the CDP is considerably more concentrated and complex—but not necessarily more enjoyable with a roasted chicken or burger. And in typically French fashion, there are multiple official Grenache-driven blends, designated geographically. My suggestion: try a Gigondas or Vacqueyras, two more Rhône Valley entries, which are both priced and styled in between the CDRs and CDPs. The Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre combo is emulated around the world; in Australia these ripe, hearty red blends are often labeled “GSM.” In Italy, Grenache is called Cannonau, and thrives on the island of Sardinia; according to recent archaeological finds, the variety may even have originated there and spread to other Mediterranean lands under Aragon rule. Indeed, in Spain, the grape is known both as Aragon and Garnacha. It plays a supporting role in Spain’s most famous table wine, Rioja, but stars in the denominations of Priorat and Calatayud. Still often blended, these Garnachas frequently come from especially old vineyards and are labeled as Garnacha, delivering boldness and personality for under $20. Suburban Wines & Spirits in Yorktown Heights is the sponsor of this column. Grenache, the Go-To Grape The Rhône Valley’s ‘other’ red variety is both prolific and generous ‘While most often blended, Grenache drives generously fruity/spicy reds from the Rhone Valley as well as from Spain, Sardinia and beyond.’ BILL “TISH” TISHERMAN Wine Talk With Tish

PAGE 6 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 BY: LAUREN C. ENEA, ESQ. Worldwide, 55 million people are living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Losing the ability to handle one’s affairs is akin to losing one’s autonomy and can make it difficult to complete daily personal and financial tasks. Most individuals, including my toddler and ninety-five-year-old grandfather, have the “I can do it myself ” mentality. While this is not a negative trait, it can deter individuals from planning for the future. I find this ironic as planning for the future actually can provide more of an opportunity to stay in control than not planning at all. Unfortunately, all too often I am contacted by children of an aging parent or loved one who has failed to plan and now has an Alzheimer’s diagnosis with limited to no ability to communicate his or her wishes. This failure to plan often results in a time consuming, and costly, Guardianship proceeding where the parent is deemed legally incapacitated by the Court and the spouse and/or children are appointed as the Guardians of the person and property. Guardianships are often narrowly tailored to only allow the Guardian’s authority to handle specific items on behalf of the incapacitated person, and as such, it can make it very difficult for the Guardian to adequately protect their ward’s assets, move them to a location they might wish to be relocated to or handle their personal affairs. Court permission for many transactions and decisions is often needed as well. As such, it is important to have conversations with your trusted loved ones as to what your financial and personal plan looks like. Advise them what you would (or would not) want your money invested in; what medical procedures you would (or would not) want done; and make sure they know what you envision your future should look like. For example, do you want to stay home, be in an assisted living facility, be moved to a warmer climate? While these are difficult questions to ponder, it is important for those you trust to know the answers to these questions in order to ensure they can fulfill your wishes. In addition to speaking with your trusted loved ones, it is of utmost importance to execute advanced directives, including a General Durable Power of Attorney, Health Care Proxy and Living Will, to provide your trusted individuals with the authority to handle your affairs in the event of your incapacity.  These documents can avoid the need for a Guardianship and allow you to be in control of whom you wish to handle your financial and personal affairs and what those individual(s) are allowed to do on your behalf. A General Durable Power of Attorney (POA) is a document that allows you (the Principal) to appoint someone (an Agent) to make financial decisions for you.  A POA will continue to be effective event after the subsequent disability or incapacity of the principal and can be broadly drafted to allow for the Agent to have broad gifting authority and other powers that can be beneficial for estate and tax planning and long-term care planning of the Principal. The selection of the Agent(s) to be named under the POA is a decision of great importance and should be someone you have a great deal of confidence in and trust implicitly. It may also be beneficial that the individual(s) selected as Agent(s) have financial and/or business experience or a Co-Agent to create a system of checks and balances. A Health Care Proxy is a document that similarly allows you to appoint an agent to make all health care decisions when you are no longer able to make these decisions yourself. The Health Care Proxy can specify which treatments and medical care you wish or do not wish to have administered. Under New York Law, only one health care Agent can be designated at a time, but alternates can be listed as well. You should discuss with your Agent exactly what your wishes are with respect to medical care and specifically your wishes with respect to end of life decisions (e.g., artificial hydration and the use of ventilators / respirators).  Lastly, a Living Will enables you to state your wishes regarding life prolonging medical treatments. While a Living Will is not statutorily recognized in New York, it is beneficial to help guide your health care Agent and doctors as to your wish to not be kept alive by extraordinary measures. As outlined herein, I believe it is sufficiently clear that taking appropriate steps to plan for your future can allow you to retain a degree of control even after an Alzheimer’s or Dementia diagnosis. BY BOB DUMAS EDITOR AT LARGE  Taking the first step and contacting The Feller Group P.C. can make an enormous difference for individuals and families who are coping with caring for an aging parent. And with people living longer than ever, that experience is trending more frequently resulting in the advent of the “sandwich generation.”  “The sandwich generation is the people who have to care for their families with younger children and their parents at the same time,” said Alan Feller, who heads The Feller Group, a law office with a team of experts who specialize in elder care law.  The key, Feller says, is all in the planning. Working closely with an elder care specialist will help reduce the stress of such challenges. And that’s where The Feller Group shines.  Whether it is the need for long-term medical care, real estate advisement, advance directives, guardianship or  wills and trusts, Feller and his team will guide clients through the process and its legalities, in order to ease the way.   Formerly known as Sloan & Feller, The Feller Group staff noticed that especially following the pandemic, more people were looking to put their affairs in order and prepare themselves for any inevitability. When someone reaches out to his group to resolve legal matters in advance, Feller says they are making a wise move that will provide peace of mind when they are faced with multiple issues all at once.  While attending Brooklyn Law School in 1996, Feller’s grandfather passed away. He had witnessed first-hand the complex logistical challenges that are involved in caring for an aging family member, while simultaneously trying to manage their finances. This prompted him to focus his career on providing personalized assistance to clients that helps them prepare for the future.   “I’ve been through it with my family,” Feller said. “How do you keep calm and sane? You do it by coming up with a plan, setting things up with a healthcare proxy—setting up care for parents so you are not banging your head against the wall. Most people don’t and they wait till an emergency happens and then it is chaotic. They only do it when they have to do it.”  Feller recommends at the very least, that people determine who will have power of attorney for a loved one. As people age, bills still need to get paid, and someone should be designated as an authority to handle these matters.  Feller’s staff includes dedicated Medicaid coordinators who are on hand to assist the legal team in determining a longterm health care plan—along with estate planners and other professionals.   “Our firm handles matters that touch on life’s most emotional and pressure filled moments,” Feller said. “It is our goal to listen and try to find solutions.”  SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 9 (845) 621-8640 thefellergroup.com • 625 Route 6, Mahopac NY 10541 We make home Contact the team today! & hospital visits • Elder Law • Wills, Trusts & Estates • Estate Planning • Medicaid Applications • Guardianships • Probates Elder Law & Estate Planning The Feller Group Expert elder care guiding families through life’s ups and downs The Feller Group, P.C. 625 Route 6 Mahopac 845-621-8640 thefellergroup.com

Adults are often inundated with confusing Medicare insurance advertisements, especially when approaching age 65. Today, more people are working beyond age 65 and often don’t know if they should stay on their employer’s health plan or move to a Medicare insurance option. Every situation is different, and there is no “one size fits all” solution. “This is where an independent licensed insurance agent can step in,” says Lisa Sedlor, Licensed Insurance Sales Agent at Lawley Medicare Solutions, “We don’t work for the Federal Medicare Program and we do not represent one specific Medicare insurance carrier.” In fact, licensed insurance agents often represent a number of different insurance carriers, which may all have a variety of different plan options available, depending on the service area. They can break it down into simple terms, so that people can decide for themselves what option they are most comfortable with. A licensed insurance agent’s job is to find a plan that works well for you, while making sure you understand it. “Best of all, here at Lawley Medicare Solutions, there is no obligation to speak with us!” says Sedlor. Enrollment in a plan may be limited to certain times of the year unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) or if you have just turned 65 and are in the Medicare Initial Enrollment Period. There are many SEPs, losing employer coverage is one of them. A licensed agent can advise if you qualify for any SEP and are eligible to enroll in a Medicare insurance plan. Lawley Medicare Solutions has independent, licensed, and certified insurance agents that can help you navigate your Medicare insurance enrollment. BY BOB DUMAS EDITOR AT LARGE Dealing with aging parents can be a particularly daunting and heartbreaking challenge, especially when you are also taking care of your own children at the same time. It is a phenomenon that has given name to the “sandwich generation.” The term sandwich generation refers to adult children stuck between caring for both their children and their aging parents. But even for those without children, or for those whose children are grown and on their own, they may still feel caught between dealing with the increasing needs of aging parents and juggling other responsibilities, like a job.   If this is a reality that you are facing, you aren’t alone. Springvale Inn Assisted Living can help. They have the resources that can support an aging parent as well as their adult children. At Springvale Inn Assisted Living, the experienced care team members truly love what they do and are experts at helping every resident enjoy the personalized care they need and the independence that they want. The staff forms close relationships with the folks who live there and partner with their families to ensure that they provide the best possible care and emotional support. Part of The Bethel Group, a non-forprofit group of companies that provide high-quality housing and retirement services to seniors, Springvale Inn has four campuses located in Croton-on-Hudson, Ossining, Valhalla, and Goshen. The organization has maintained a proud tradition as experts in senior care for more than 100 years and has helped older adults live their lives to the fullest by providing enriching and health-promoting programs. As a non-profit company, the pricing for any of the senior care options offered at Springvale is substantially lower than competitors—something that sets it apart in the area. Families and residents are constantly surprised at the quality of care they receive for their monthly fees. They work hard to keep the community affordable without cutting corners. They are flexible on payments with new residents who need to sell a home and veterans who rely on VA benefits which can take time to receive. Jonathan Rivera, community relations director at Springvale Inn, explained that the staff can adapt to the needs of residents when they find themselves requiring more assistance. “We call it kind of apartment-style living, so a person is able to live here independently and as time goes by, if they need help, we have nurses and aides here 24/7,” Rivera said. “We are really the best value in Westchester. We are a company that has been around for a long time, and we are proud to be a trusted home for a family’s loved ones.” If you find yourself in a situation where you want to explore the options of caring for an aging parent, investigate assisted living. Whatever the challenge, Springvale Inn is ready to help. SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 21 The Alzheimer’s Association invites Westchester residents to join the Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on Sunday, Oct. 1 at Westchester Community College. On Walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony—an empowering experience that brings people together in the fight against the disease. The colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent people’s connection to Alzheimer’s, their personal reasons for joining the Walk. “When a family is impacted by Alzheimer’s, they can often feel like they are alone on the journey,” said Esther McCarthy, Walk Director at Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter. “The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a place for them to meet others in similar situations and find a community of support that is working together to end Alzheimer’s.” More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. In New York alone, there are more than 410,000 people living with the disease and 546,000 caregivers. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s raises critical funds for care, support and research programs to support these New Yorkers. PAGE 22 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 BY JESSICA JAFET CONTRIBUTING WRITER Taking a proactive approach to one’s health and well-being is one of the best ways to prevent injury, pain and disease—at any age.  When it comes to averting falls or other missteps, especially as people age, there are some simple exercises that will go a long way in promoting strength and balance, according to Dr. Nicole Solomos, a White Plains Hospital physician who is board-certified in Family Medicine, Sports Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine.  Committing to even just a few minutes a day of strength and resistance training can improve the ease of movement in everyday life activities. “We lose muscle mass as we age, it is just a natural process,” Dr. Solomos said. “In order to step off a curb safely without falling, or pick up a grandchild, resistance training is essential.” The doctor, also a certified health and wellness coach, who once served as a staff physician for the US Open Tennis Tournament and for several semi-pro soccer teams, has some practical suggestions for achieving more self-efficacy: exercises that can promote good health and ease of movement for life.  Her recommendation is to start with something that is manageable—and to commit to doing the movements at least three times a week.  Preventing a fall Tips from an expert Dr. Nicole Solomos, White Plains Hospital Physician Associates. Resistance Training Use bodyweight exercises, bands, kettlebells or dumbbells Remember that sets of fewer repetitions, even five minutes, are better than none. Core and lower extremity resistance training is the best approach for fall prevention and balance. If someone is not comfortable going to a gym, start at home with household items. Try a chair squat where you have some support; stretch down and come back up. Dr. Solomos has had years of experience with non-surgical sports medicine, orthopedic injuries and ailments. She explained that the fundamental need for staying ahead of injury as we get older is not only for the goal of physical strength. “Doing resistance training makes you feel better— so it is good for mood and mental health as well,” Dr. Solomos added. Families with children at home are doing laundry most often, and those with pets may find there is ample laundry to wash as well. With so much laundry being generated, homeowners may want to consider paying extra attention to the space in the house where their clothing is being cleansed. Laundry room renovations may not top homeowners’ priority lists, but it may be time to give these rooms another look. Assess your equipment If your appliances are aging, a laundry room renovation can start with an investment in new appliances. New models have large capacity loads, tend to be energy-efficient and could have innovative features that help fit with your laundry lifestyle. Purchasing front-loading models also can free up design space, as you can install a counter directly above the units, saving room for other items like drying racks. Figure out your room needs A laundry room need not be limited to laundry only. Many homeowners make large laundry rooms catch-all spaces that can serve as utility or mud rooms, pantry overflows, or off-season storage areas. Consider the functions you want the room to serve and include those ideas in your designs. Add some natural light If possible, include a window in your laundry room. Natural light can help make the room more enjoyable. It also can help you identify stains on clothes that need to be addressed and make it easier to fold matching items like socks. Think about a utility sink Many washing machines drain out directly to waste pipes in the floor or wall, but you also can opt to have them empty into a utility sink. This sink also provides a convenient place to handwash items, clean tools or paintbrushes, or store items that perhaps you do not want to bring into a bathroom or kitchen sink. Include some flair This utilitarian space need not be boring or bereft of design elements. Mirror your home’s style in the laundry room, and include wall hangings, plants, accent items, and even task lighting. Play up certain features with a bold floor tile or brightly colored walls. Updating laundry rooms can be a great way to make doing laundry more enjoyable and efficient.  This article was provided by Metro Creative Connection Laundry room renovations you’ll love
