Yorktown menorah lighting

Yorktown celebrated the

rst night of Chanukah on

Sunday, Nov. 28, with a pub-

lic menorah lighting at Jack

DeVito Veterans Memorial

Field.

Dozens attended the cer-

emony, which began at 4

p.m. following a parade that

departed from the Chabad of

Yorktown.

Town Supervisor Matt

Slater lighted the shamash—

the “attendant” candle that

is used to kindle the other

lights—and Rabbi Yehuda

Heber lighted the rst candle.

At the ceremony, following

remarks by Slater and Heber,

those in attendance said some

blessings and sang songs.

Chanukah originated more

than 2,100 years ago when a

small army called the Mac-

cabees defeated the Syrian

Greek army. e Jewish peo-

ple took back the temple in

Jerusalem and rededicated it

with a menorah lighting. A fire juggling show followed the menorah lighting ceremony.
