NEWSPAPERS PUBLISHED WEEKLY BY HALSTON MEDIA, LLC MAIN OFFICE 118 N. Bedford Road, Suite 100 Mount Kisco, NY 10549 ©2023 Halston Media, LLC 25 years ago, I produced the first-ever home makeover TV show in Malaysia at a time when the country was among the pioneers in satellite and pay TV in Asia. Most of the population had never seen anything like it. The show’s format was simple yet fresh and captivating: free home makeovers by one of the country’s top interior designers, using sponsored products and services. My role extended far beyond writing, directing, and overseeing production—I was also responsible for securing product sponsorships. Convincing business owners, from small local shops to international brands, to give away their products in exchange for publicity was a challenge. We needed everything—decorative vases, rugs, wallpaper, designer lights, flooring, paint, appliances, furniture— the works. Some were skeptical, but many saw the potential. Out of over 30 sponsors I approached, only one declined, dismissing the idea as unrealistic. But when the show premiered, it became an instant hit. We transformed disastrous spaces into breathtaking designer homes. The day after the first episode aired, our lighting sponsor called, excited that the store was swamped with customers asking for the exact lights featured on the show. Even the company that had initially declined called back, eager to come on board. Fast forward 21 years, I transitioned into print media. Stepping into the role of Special Sections Editor for Halston Media felt like a new chapter, yet oddly familiar. A year later, we rebranded the section to Hudson Valley Living, further emphasizing our mission to promote businesses in the region. In many ways, it felt like revisiting the essence of my TV show—creating a platform where businesses and readers connect. Month after month, as I write spotlights and features, I strategize the best ways to showcase local businesses. And the best part? Seeing it work. Business owners frequently share how their features bring a surge of new customers, reinforcing the power of creative marketing. It’s a full-circle moment—proof that when you build a bridge between businesses and the community, incredible things happen. So here we are with the March issue, packed with insightful spotlights, articles, and engaging columns. This month’s Boomers issue offers expert insights on elder law, senior living, and health services. Our Summer Camps section helps families plan ahead, while Flavors & Feast highlights special senior menus and a festive St. Patrick’s Day spread. With warmer weather ahead, our home improvement experts share what they can do for your next project. But don’t just stop at the first few pages—we’ve packed this issue with gems all the way through. So, keep turning and keep discovering. Read on! The importance of a proactive approach to estate planning I have always found it important to follow the motto “Hope for the Best, but Plan for the Worst.”  When it comes to estate planning, this motto especially runs true and today more than ever a proactive approach to handling one’s legal and estate planning affairs is essential. There are a number of benefits to being proactive. A mentor of mine once told me that if I wanted to truly understand the concept, I needed to read Stephen Covey’s best selling book entitled “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” For those of you unfamiliar with this particular writing, Professor Covey’s first habit is to “Be Proactive” and he defines proactive people as those who take responsibility for their life and do not find external sources to blame for their behavior or circumstances. Covey emphasizes that instead of reacting to or worrying about conditions or situations you have little control over, proactive people focus their time and energy on the things they can control. The different reactions, and frankly, stages of grief, worry and stress we have encountered during the COVID19 Pandemic best illustrates the difference between proactive and reactive people.  During 2020 and 2021 I heard many clients, colleagues, friends and family say that they were putting off making any major plans and decisions, including seeking medical or financial advice, formulating their estate plans and drafting their advanced directives, such as health care proxies and powers of attorney, until “things went back to normal.” While one can understand the decision to avoid doctors and medical facilities or hold off on making any major financial decisions, the decision to delay estate planning seemed particularly odd in light of the fact that a majority of victims of the COVID19 pandemic were senior citizens or those with underlying health issues.  If the possibility of one becoming ill or being incapacitated is greater due to a global pandemic, I would hope it would be all the more reason to be proactive and ensure that the important estate planning documents such as a Last Will and Testament, Power of Attorney, Health Care Proxy and perhaps a Revocable and/or Irrevocable Trust be prepared and ready to sign as soon as possible.  Fortunately, over the past four years many seniors and others have also been proactive and have used their time to arrange their affairs: they took the time to review their current financial affairs, review any existing estate plans and advanced directives they had prepared in the past, examined the decision they had made, including the individuals they had selected as beneficiaries and agents; and they organized and prepared comprehensive lists of their assets and income. With this roadmap of information in hand, proactive clients then formulated with the help of their attorney, estate and elder law asset protection plans to help fulfill their goals and objectives, including, estate tax planning, planning for the cost of long term care (home care / nursing home care) and protecting their life savings. The simple exercise of merely listing one’s assets, income and objectives is an excellent example of being proactive.  Once this is done, the step of meeting with a qualified Wills, Trusts and Estates and Elder Law attorney becomes less daunting and a more redemptive experience. It allows one to be in the driver seat and take control over a situation and their future decisions. If you have not taken the time to review your estate plan, beneficiary designations, assets and incomes, I urge you to take the time to do so. Being proactive is always the best choice, and it is never too early or too late to start planning for your future. Lauren C. Enea, Esq. is a Partner at Enea, Scanlan & Sirignano, LLP. Clear-thinking For puzzle solutions, please see theparamountrehab.com The impact of reading on cognitive decline Aging and change go hand in hand. Although some may bemoan the gray hairs that start to arrive or stiffness in the knees that seems to sneak up on a person in middle age, such concerns are not necessarily enough to lose sleep over. However, many people 50 or older are nervous about the potential for cognitive issues like dementia as they grow older. The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that 6.7 million people have Alzheimer’s disease in the United States. The Alzheimer Society of Canada estimates that there were 733,040 people living with dementia in the country as of January 1, 2024. Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias can rob people of their memories, personalities and abilities to live satisfying, independent lives. While it may not be impossible to prevent all cognitive issues completely, there is reason to believe that reading could be an ally in cognitive care. The American Academy of Neurology says that reading stimulates the brain and has been shown to slow down cognitive decline in old age. Reading also may help slow down memory loss. The powers of reading were noticed more than 10 years ago when a 2013 study from researchers at Emory University measured readers’ MRI scans as they read books. They found the deeper readers went into a story, the more areas of their brains were activated. This activity remained elevated for several days after participants finished their books. The more a person reads, the stronger complex networks in the brain become. Additional evidence that reading can help the brain was noted by researchers at the Texas A&M School of Public Health. A 2024 study suggests that older people with mild cognitive impairment who engage in high levels of activities like reading, hobbies and word games have better memory, working memory, attention, and processing speed than those who do not take part in such endeavors. Furthermore, a 2021 study published in Neurology found that high levels of cognitive activity, like reading and writing letters, can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease by five years among those age 80 and over. Reading can keep brains functioning optimally and potentially delay age-related cognitive decline. This article was provided by Metro Creative Connection. Think about what aligns with your personal and academic goals. • How can I improve my chances of getting accepted? Focus on strong grades, extracurricular involvement, recommendation letters, and a wellwritten personal statement. Typically, you’ll need transcripts, test scores (if required), recommendation letters, a personal statement or essay, and a list of activities or achievements. • How do I find scholarships or financial aid opportunities? Vintages happen once a year, so change in the wine world is rarely overnight. But I am happy to report that some real wine news has materialized — right here in New York State. Cabernet Franc is primarily a blending grape in Bordeaux, and a 100% varietal wine in France’s Loire Valley, notably in the village wines Bourgueil, Chinon and Saumur. While other French grapes are household names now in America, Cab Franc (fun to say, right?) has never gained much attention. Quietly, but assuredly, wineries from Long Island to the Finger Lakes, have been embracing Cabernet Franc. Decades of trial and error, and research, have led this underdog past Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as the state’s flagship red wine. The delicious results of this learning curve were on display in February with the debut of Cab Franc Forward NY (CFFNY). Founded proactively by eight New York wineries, this statewide initiative staged a remarkable walk-around tasting in Manhattan, with 35 producers representing a spectrum of regions and styles. Samples included a canned rosé, several reserve-level bottlings, and a few still-vibrant library releases. Humble & Versatile Compared to its better-known Cab-Sauv sibling, Cab Franc is consistently lower in alcohol and tannin, giving it an edge both in pure sip-ability and food-friendliness. Further, its production is almost exclusively coming from small producers, who use less oak as they focus on expressing terroir. In short, the Cabernet Franc wines reaching our shelves represent purposeful, hands-on winemaking. In California, while Franc is outplanted by Sauvignon to the tune of 94,000 acres to 3,400, Cab Franc is actually commanding a higher average market price ($2,805.65/ton vs. $2,016.85). New York has 600+ acres of Cabernet Franc under vine; so it may sound micro, but Cab Franc is NY’s second-most planted red variety (after Concord), led by the Finger Lakes (295 acres), Long Island (96) and the Hudson Valley (29).  If the change of seasons inspires you to seek out new wines, Cab Franc is ready to reward. Think of it as a fresh, lively red, dry but still fruity, with a savory edge and not too bold. Perfect for Spring. New York’s best examples top $20, but deliver a delicious taste-glimpse of the future. Labels to look for include: Apollo’s Praise, Bedell Cellars, Boundary Breaks, Dr. Konstantin Frank, Milea Estate, Millbrook, Onabay, Osmote, Paumanok, Ravines, Hermann J. Wiemer, and Wölffer Estate. Low-profile French grape angles to be NY’s next big thing SUBURBAN WINES & SPIRITS Westchester’s Fine Wine & Spirits Destination Tasting Notes SPONSORED BY 379 Downing Drive • Yorktown Heights, NY • 914-962-3100 www.suburbanwines.com • FREE Same Day Delivery (*Restrictions Apply) Topiary Wines, originally a fruit farm called La Tramontane, was transformed in 2005 when Roy Andrews, along with a skilled viticultural team, established a cellar and tasting room. In August 2014, renowned Burgundy producer Philippe Colin and his business partner, sommelier Serge Jaczynski, acquired the 64-hectare estate, drawn by its potential. Situated in the foothills of the Wemmershoek Mountains, the estate is surrounded by the dramatic Klein Drakenstein range, benefiting from a natural wind funnel created by the Hottentots Holland and Simonsberg mountains, which promotes even ripening and elegant wines. The vineyards, planted in 1998 after extensive soil analysis, span 20 hectares and feature Shiraz, Cabernet, and Chardonnay. To honor its fruitfarming roots, the remaining land is planted with plum trees, fostering biodiversity. Welcoming visitors with its namesake topiary sculptures, this boutique winery seamlessly blends nature, viticulture, and artistry into a truly enchanting experience.  Tasting Notes: As the name suggests, the 2021 Chardonnay Sandstone comes from sandstone soils in Franschhoek. The nose offers a brilliant balance of minerality and yellow pomaceous character before sweet Meyer lemon and subtle hints of toasted almonds waft from the glass. Medium-bodied and with 13% alcohol, the Chardonnay offers a fresh and clean mouthfeel with energetic acidity before coming to a bright, complex finish. After spending a year in French oak barrels, the wine was transferred to stainless steel tanks for 12 months of further resting. Just under 5,000 bottles were produced MARCH 13, 2025 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 23

VIM WILKINSON EDITOR Pham Eye in Yorktown Heights is a premier ophthalmology practice dedicated to providing top-tier eye care in a state-of-the-art facility. Led by board-certified ophthalmologist and Castle Connolly Top Doctor, Dr. Lan Pham, the practice has been serving the Westchester and Putnam communities for over 25 years. Dr. Pham specializes in cataract surgery, glaucoma treatments, Botox and comprehensive medical eye exams, offering cutting-edge solutions for various ocular conditions. A key focus at Pham Eye is the treatment of dry eye disease, a common yet often overlooked condition that can significantly impact daily life. Dry eyes may present as fluctuating vision, burning, redness, irritation, and eye fatigue. Understanding that each patient’s condition is unique, Dr. Pham and her team begin with a thorough eye exam to identify the underlying causes, which can range from environmental factors to medical conditions such as autoimmune diseases, Sjögren’s syndrome, and rosacea. “We utilize a wide range of available treatments including advanced dry eye treatments to give dry eye patients faster and longer lasting relief,” said Dr. Pham. One of their most innovative options available at Pham Eye is Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) which are both non-invasive, pain-free treatments that target Meibomian gland dysfunction, a leading cause of dry eyes. “We have the Epi-C IPL and LLLT from Espansione and the TearCare treatment,” Dr. Pham said. IPL and LLLT help reduce inflammation and restore eyelid gland function. The combined therapy reduces bacteria and Demodex mites, lowering the bacterial load on the skin and eyelids that contributes to irritation and styes. Patients often experience improvements that can last up to six months to a year, with additional benefits such as reducing fine lines and improving rosacea symptoms. These treatments are conducted in a comfortable and relaxing setting, taking approximately 40 minutes with minimal downtime. Patients can resume their normal activities immediately after. As Pham Eye enters its second year in its Yorktown Heights location, Dr. Pham and her team remain committed to providing the highest level of eye care, ensuring that patients in the local and surrounding communities receive the most effective and advanced treatments available. How Yorktown Funeral Home can help Yorktown Funeral Home, a family-owned establishment in Shrub Oak, remains a trusted source of comfort and support for families during their time of loss. Committed to providing dignified, professional, and highly personalized services, the funeral home welcomes all faiths and offers a range of options to accommodate individual religious and financial needs. Led by Anthony J. Guarino, a seasoned funeral director with over 40 years of experience, Yorktown Funeral Home is deeply rooted in the community. His daughter, Tracy Ellsworth, works alongside him, bringing warmth and dedication to their family business. The funeral home’s preplanning option allows individuals to create their own unique life celebration. It alleviates the emotional and financial burden on family members, giving them the time and space to focus on healing when the time comes. Preplanning also provides the option to prepay. By securing funeral costs in advance, individuals can protect themselves from inflation and future price increases. All prepayments are placed into a trust fund, ensuring the money remains secure until it is needed. This relieves families of the financial stress of making arrangements during a difficult time. Whether you are seeking immediate services or considering preplanning for the future, Yorktown Funeral Home’s compassionate team is ready to help you navigate these important decisions with care and respect. Did you know? A high cost of living and advancements in medicine that have contributed to longer life expectancies would seemingly compel individuals to work longer, but data indicates the average professional is retiring shortly after turning 60. Data from the 2024 MassMutual Retirement Happiness Study indicates that the average retirement age among American retirees is 62. That’s in spite of the fact that pre-retirees and retirees who participated in the study indicated that 63 is the ideal retirement age. Canadians are staying in the workforce a good deal longer, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age across Canada in 2023 was 65.1. That disparity could be due to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), which replaces part of retirees’ income with a monthly, taxable benefit. The Government of Canada reports the standard age to start the CPP is 65. This article was provided by Metro Creative Connection.
