compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid

Maybe plant eaters get like this because we’ve forced them to
feel so defensive about their choices. Vegans must get tired of
being asked, “Where do you get your protein?” Ellen DeGeneres

Animal products are known to be the main contributors to heart
disease, Type 2 diabetes, and brain deterioration or dementia.
But just eating plant-based meals alone does not guarantee good
health. You still need to read nutrition labels because processed
food that is free of animal sources is often very heavy with sodium.

en there’s the fact that the United States allows farmers to use
the controversial herbicide glyphosate, known commercially as
Roundup. e New York Times reported in August 2018 that of
45 samples of breakfast cereal tested, 31 of them contained el-
evated levels of glyphosate. e FDA considers certain amounts of
poison to be acceptable in our diet. Does that sound crazy to you,
too?

Recent scienti c studies have provided growing evidence that
plant-based diets can alleviate or even eliminate symptoms of
many diseases. While a recent podcast on NPR proclaimed 2019
“ e Year of the Vegan,” it may not be necessary to cut out ALL
animal products to see improvement in health. As with all things
American, it seems it may be the AMOUNT of meat we consume.
U.S. News & World Report just published its annual “Best Diets”
rankings and the Mediterranean diet is number one: Eat primar-
ily organic plant-based foods, replace butter with healthy fats such
as olive oil, use herbs and spices instead of salt to avor food, and
limit meat to no more than once a week (and even then it should
be free range, wild caught, or grass fed.)

But diet is a very personal choice. So, whether you are a carni-
vore who nds vegans a bit holier-than-thou or a vegan who can’t
understand why carnivores just don’t “get it,” there is no need to
judge, scrutinize or lecture. Personally, I’m a fooditarian. I don’t
care for lamb or beef, but I will de nitely eat a crispy piece of
bacon.

Author’s note: My vegan daughter never ever lectures me about dietary
choices, and she is therefore perfect.

845-208-0774. Believes cannabis is ‘gateway’ drug

600 Bank Road Jeferson Valley • (914) 250-2750 • www.clubft.com To the editor,
Remember the words and admonition of our parents and

teachers, “money is the root of evil”. Apparently, our governor
of New York has dismissed this valuable lesson in his desire to
legalize recreational marijuana for New York residents.

How can any respectable leader advocate for more drugs in
our communities in the midst of a heroin and opium epidemic
that is rampant throughout our country?

He boasts that legalization of recreational marijuana will bring
nearly $300 million in tax revenue.

During my tenure as school administrator and elected o cial,
I sponsored many awareness programs for children, teachers and
families, particularly when crack and cocaine was tormenting so
many of our youth and their families. Many resource profession-
als came to speak at these sessions, and each one clearly demon-
strated the dangerous chemical content of cannabis (marijuana).
One speaker, Father Dan Egan, the “junkie priest,” as he was
known for his great work with addicts, clearly showed how these
chemicals in marijuana led to further drug dependence. Unlike
the false impression the media and advocates for legalization
give, most recent studies show the gateway e ect of marijuana
use leading to more and more dangerous drugs

I urge you to contact your local elected o cials and police
agencies to speak out against this e ort of the governor to legal-
ize recreational marijuana. We owe this e ort to our children and
grandchildren, particularly those many drug addicts that occupy
our treatment facilities who started with marijuana.

is issue is certainly about a healthy lifestyle and every sound-
minded person recognizes what damage recreational marijuana
can cause. Please contact Gov. Cuomo at Governor.Cuomo@

It gets tiresome. So, it is nice to see the president counterpunching.

sure the goal is challenging but achievable. Setting a weight loss
goal of one to two pounds per week is much more attainable, safe
and will be easier to maintain.

Is your resolution realistic? Remember that big things come in
small packages. Even a simple goal of drinking six to eight cups
of water daily may take some time to achieve. You need to be
realistic about what you’re expecting of yourself. If your goal is

around you.

Is your resolution time-based? Putting things o till tomorrow
is good while you’re on vacation, but not when you’re trying to
commit to a goal. Setting reasonable deadlines will help moti-
vate you to maintain focus without room for procrastination. It’s
all about replacing old habits with newer, healthier ones. Habit
researchers suggest you start by combining a new habit with an
already established one. Bring a pair of sneakers to work tomor-
row. Replace your habit of sitting in your o ce breakroom by
taking a brisk walk around the block. Not only will you feel more
alert for the rest of the day, you’ll be one day closer to establish-
ing a new, healthier habit.

e takeaway of the SMART goals model is that while you
may have a lofty end-goal that requires signi cant change to
your health and lifestyle, it’s important to break those goals
into smaller, speci c and realistic objectives that you can mea-
sure along the way. Make sure you set a timetable for turning
those bite-sized goals into positive daily habits. Making healthy
changes while keeping these principles in mind is the SMARTer
way to keep your New Year’s resolution.

RCK opened Mahopac’s eyes

by taking eight of the next 10
bouts to put the win away.

“I knew once we got to our

good match; RCK fought tough.”

Several wrestlers have been en-

“Berisha (19-6) has been out

DiSanto said. “He came back and
looked like he didn’t miss a beat.
Alexander Smith has also been
wrestling well, and he picked up
a good win for us.

“Centrone (33-3) faced a kid
who scored on him, and the kid
was good, but Angelo came back
in dominant fashion and pinned
him,” DiSanto added. “Tyler
(Roa, 31-5) has also looked good
in every match, he’s wrestling

looked good.”
