Late spring—before the sun starts to cook and flowers fade—is time for trying new things, going new places…. Wine included. But no matter what time of year, the challenge of trying new wines is immediately complicated by the fact that there are so many different ones. The trick to making faster sense of the vinous universe is approaching wine as a manageable set of styles, not hundreds of labels, which can be explored without getting too hung up on specific grapes and places. Here are a few tips for “safe” experimentation. Price matters. Sometimes wine prices seem wacky, but within the mass market of table wines, there is generally quite a bit of commonality among wines at different price levels. Wines around $10-$12 will be lighter in body and flavor intensity and simpler overall than wines over $20. Sticking within the price range you are already used to will yield better results with “if you like A, then try B…”. Stay with the Grape. If you like a varietal wine (meaning it is at least 75% of one grape), try another wine made from the same grapes in a different region, at the same price point. If you like the new one, keep going. If not, go back to your preferred region and try a different producer at around the same price point. Sauvignon Blanc works well this way. It thrives in many different places, in distinct ways, setting the stage for sampling New Zealand, Chile, South Africa, California, and France, both in Loire appellations like Sancerre and in Bordeaux (where it often gets blended). Among reds, Sangiovese presents plenty of cross-trekking within Italy. Stylistically, in the $20-$30 range, options such as Chianti Classico, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Rosso di Montalcino are like kissing cousins. In Spain, if you like Rioja, try other Tempranillo-based regional wines, notably Ribera del Duero. Ask away! Arguably the very best way to discover a new wine is to take advantage of a good wine shop. They edit the wine universe to create their inventory; they simply know the styles of the wines they stock. So if you have a favorite wine you get all the time, just hold that very bottle up and ask for something just like it. At a good wine shop, a friendly face will light up and quickly have at least one or two suggestions—and maybe even one a little cheaper, and maybe one that is a different grape entirely. That’s how wine discoveries happen! Bill “Tish” Tisherman, a longtime Bedford resident and former editor of Wine Enthusiast and Beverage Media, develops wine tastings and events via his website, wineforall.com. Suburban Wines & Spirits in Yorktown Heights is the sponsor of this column. MAY 23, 2024 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 13 PEACE OF MIND “My 92-year-old dad began to show signs of cognitive decline and needed more daily assistance. Despite being physically active, his challenges impacted his well-being. He and my mother were living at home but she had mobility issues and couldn’t manage his care. As time passed, his memory issues worsened, leading to worrisome incidents like leaving the stove on and getting lost, prompting a necessary change for both of them. We visited several communities for Dad but at Maplewood, we were greeted by friendly smiles, an opendoor policy, and a genuine approach. We were impressed by the longevity of the staff and their experience. Adjusting to his new “home” took time but the positive changes have been remarkable. The team is committed to excellent communication, attentive care, consistently delicious meals, and well-structured routines. My dad is thriving and is happier, healthier, and more engaged. I wholeheartedly recommend Maplewood for exceptional care and support for your loved ones.” —Brian for his father,Don,, Resident Maplewood Senior Living is dedicated to the care and wellbeing of our residents living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. PAGE 24 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – MAY 23, 2024 BY VIM WILKINSON EDITOR In the bustling world of teenagers, where school, extracurricular activities, and social engagements often take center stage, it’s rare to find a teen carving out their own path with passion and determination. Lakeland teen Victoria Marricco breaks the mold as she not only discovered her talent for baking at the tender age of 14 two years ago but also turned it into a thriving business known as Treats by Tori. Victoria’s journey into the world of baking started innocently enough, with a simple curiosity and a love for experimenting in the kitchen. What began as a hobby quickly blossomed into a full-fledged passion as she honed her skills and perfected her recipes. Friends, family, and community members have become loyal patrons of Treats by Tori, raving about Victoria’s delectable creations that rival those of professional bakers. Here’s what the talented teen shared with us. What initially sparked your interest in baking, and how did you decide to turn it into a business at such a young age? During COVID, there were many trends, one being an exploding cake. My cousin and I decided to give it a try, and we had a lot of fun doing it. We continued to bake all sorts of cakes, and eventually I tried baking macarons. And surprisingly, they came out really good. I started sharing my macarons with my friends and family. The response was definitely not what I had expected. I had someone ask for macarons for a bridal shower, and so from then on, I started selling my baked goods and created my business, Treats by Tori. Your creations are not only delicious, but also beautifully designed. Where and how did you learn to bake at this level? To be honest, I learned all my baking techniques and skills from social media, more specifically from the app TikTok. Every time I bake, I am always looking for ways to improve, so I like to watch tutorials during my free time and try to apply those techniques to my baking. What are the crowd favorites, and what is your own personal favorite? My crowd favorites are always changing. In 2023, my macaron towers were very popular, and I received a ton of orders for sweet sixteens. But currently, I feel that my sugar cookies have been very popular. I honestly enjoy baking every single dessert because the designs are endless, and I love expressing my creativity. But my favorite part about baking is the feeling of excitement after seeing my creations come to life and, of course, my customers reactions. See more of Victoria’s work on Instagram: @treatsbytorii. As the temperatures rise, these unwanted invaders come out of hibernation to cause irritation, property damage and even illness. From deer, wasps, termites, and rats to mosquitoes and diseasecarrying ticks, these unwelcome visitors can interrupt the joy of the season.   Fortunately, quality pest control services have the expertise to keep these invaders at bay inside and outside the home. We took a closer look at a local company that has been helping homeowners and businesses with their pest problems since 1963. All County Pest Control is a secondgeneration family owned-and-operated company servicing Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties. “We offer Home Protection Plans for year-round coverage of ants, spiders, crickets, wasps, yellow jackets and rodents,” said Ed Binns, owner and operator of the company. “In addition, we have complete lawn treatment programs for dealing with ticks in your yard by treating the entire finished lawn area as well as the woods’ edge. We can fully protect your landscape shrubs for the winter without any use of netting or fences, utilizing a very effective, commercial grade winter deer repellent treatment.” All County Pest Control is a registered business, fully licensed, and insured. All its service technicians are knowledgeable and certified applicators. “Our office staff is fully educated on the pest control process and can effectively answer any pest question you may have and provide you with an on-the-spot, no-commitment estimate for service,” added Binns. Their trucks are equipped with various types of application equipment to address any pest situation: mounted power spray rigs, granular applicators, power backpack sprayers, and more. Extension ladders and extension equipment are on board as well. This allows All County technicians to effectively treat the entire structure, decrease the pest population, and reduce the need for treatment on the interior of a home— which provides a much better living environment for families. All County uses the Integrated Pest Management approach (IPM), an environmentally responsible system for managing pests that works by eliminating their sources of food, water, and shelter. Through inspection, identification, and treatment, pests can be stopped before they get in and cause problems. Contact All County staff for information regarding a one-time pest control service or year-round protection, tailored to specific customer needs.
