PAGE 6 – THE YORKTOWN CHAMBER DIRECTORY - 2023 Welcome to Yorktown, a picturesque community located in northern Westchester County, New York, just 35 miles from New York City. The town is 40 square miles of rolling hills, farmland, residential areas, and light industry. The town was first settled in 1683 and played a crucial role in the American Revolution, with the Pines Bridge crossing of the Croton River guarded by the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, an integrated unit that included African Americans and Indians. Yorktown was incorporated in 1788 and named in commemoration of America’s decisive Revolutionary War victory at Yorktown, Virginia. Yorktown offers a charming blend of commercial, residential, and recreational opportunities for its just over 36,000 residents. The town has five business hamlets: Crompond, Jefferson Valley, Mohegan Lake, Shrub Oak, and Yorktown Heights, and 12 distinct residential neighborhoods, each with its own unique character and identity. Yorktown is also home to many parks and open spaces where residents enjoy activities such as swimming, playing sports, and picnicking with family and friends. With excellent schools, active community organizations, and dedicated civic leaders, Yorktown is a vibrant community. Yorktown has over 20 parks and recreational areas with several trails of varying degrees of difficulty, from leisurely walking paths to challenging mountain biking trails. The town is also known for its sustainable agriculture, and many farms and markets offer locally grown, organic produce. Additionally, the town has many places of worship, food pantries, support organizations, services clubs and organizations, veterans groups, a dog park, landmarks, a library, a golf course, memorials, parks, preserves, and athletic facilities. It is also a Monarch Butterfly Friendly Town, a Purple Heart Town, and a Tree City USA community. Welcome to Yorktown! New storeis the ultimate destination for sports fanatics Any sports nut is going to have a hard time walking past Bill Gilbert’s store without doing a double-take. Located on the second floor of the Jefferson Valley Mall, BG Entertainment features a wall-to-wall selection of memorabilia that has been autographed by the biggest names in the sports, from Tom Brady to Derek Jeter. The all-star lineup of collectibles has been personally curated over a decade by Gilbert, who once ran the business out of his Lagrangeville home. However, as Gilbert’s inventory grew, so did his need for space. That brought BG Entertainment to the Jefferson Valley Mall in 2022. “I just love the reaction I’ve been getting from the customers,” Gilbert said. “When people say it’s the coolest store they’ve ever seen, it means a lot. It’s been a 10-year journey. Every item in here I acquire is from an experience. To see it all in one spot, I get a lot of enjoyment from that.” The mall storefront features memorabilia signed by active and retired athletes from baseball, basketball, football, hockey, soccer, and combat sports (boxing/MMA). The Jefferson Valley Mall storefront has also hosted several public autograph signings. A January 2023 signing with retired WWE wrestler Kane, for example, brought out nearly 1,000 excited customers. Gilbert said the mall storefront is the “pinnacle” of his business, but BG Entertainment provides many other services. Since 2006, the company has specialized in weddings and special occasions, children’s parties and rentals, and sporting events and memorabilia. BG Entertainment started its autograph business “accidentally” in 2010, Gilbert said. A New York Giants fan, Gilbert decided to link up with wide receiver Steve Smith for an autograph signing. Smith then introduced Gilbert to other Giants players, which led to him working with New York Yankees players, and the rest is history. “I brought in [Steve Smith] and it kind of created an idea that the market needed it,” Gilbert said. “People responded well.” BG Entertainment is happy to call the Jefferson Valley Mall home, so much so that Gilbert recently opened up another store on the first floor. This additional space will serve as a gathering space for autograph signings, comedy shows, open mic nights, and more. Gilbert celebrated his grand opening with a February 2023 autograph signing headlines by four New York sports legends: Dwight “Doc” Gooden, Mike Richter, Ahmad Bradshaw, and Wayne Chrebet. A question and answer session was held in the first-floor space after the signing. The Beauty Spot Westchester, owned by Ashley Giannico, is a hair salon located in Shrub Oak that opened its doors on March 8, 2022. After reaching its oneyear anniversary, Giannico looks back on the experience with pride and joy, saying, “It has been a very successful year.” Much of Giannico’s clientele followed her from her previous workplace, and new clients have come through referrals and word of mouth. “My clients are like family,” said Giannico, a Mahopac native and current Peekskill resident. The salon is an extension of her home, a place where clients can come to relax and be pampered. “I’m not your typical hairdresser,” Giannico added. “I’m very down to earth.” The Beauty Spot Westchester is not just a business for Giannico — it is her passion. Giannico said she had a vision for the salon and worked tirelessly to make it a reality. She acknowledges that the first year was a learning experience, but she was up for the challenge. “There’s risk and there’s reward,” she said. “I knew I could handle the risk and I was ready for the reward.” The salon offers an array of hair services, including color, cut, and styling. Giannico said she loves transforming her clients’ hair and giving them a fresh new look. Before opening, the Beauty Spot Westchester underwent renovations to create the salon’s warm and welcoming atmosphere. Giannico’s father and boyfriend played a crucial role in the construction w o r k . Giannico leased the space in late December, construction started in January, and the salon was open by March. “I had a vision, and I tackled it right away,” Giannico said. The salon has new floors, plumbing, and electric, making it a comfortable and modern space for clients to relax and unwind. The salon is currently an intimate space with only two stylists, including Giannico. However, she is open to having another stylist come on board to join the team. Giannico said she is currently booked five days a week from morning to night, but new clients can make reservations. As Ashley looks to the future, she hopes to continue growing and expanding the salon. “I would love to be here for as long as I can imagine,” she said. The Beauty Spot Westchester is located at 3685 Old Yorktown Road near the intersection of Route 132 and East Main Street, just off the Taconic State Parkway. The café, located at 1877 Commerce St., is the brainchild of Vince and Evelyn Autera, who brought their burgeoning business and tasty acai bowls to Yorktown Heights in November 2021 after a successful pop-up shop in Peekskill. Evelyn, a native of Rio de Janeiro, introduced Vince to the popular Brazilian “superfood” in 2019, sparking a shared passion for acai bowls. When the pandemic forced the couple to spend more time at home, they began preparing acai bowls in their apartment and delivering them locally. Despite the challenges of starting a business during a pandemic, Vince’s sales background and their love for the product helped them scale up the operation. THE YORKTOWN CHAMBER DIRECTORY - 2023 – PAGE 39 Vince and Evelyn Autera “We got a chest freezer and stuck it in our apartment. It took up half the space,” Vince recalled. “We made a makeshift website and did deliveries in Peekskill. We were overcoming a lot of challenges that came with it, but we were good at it.” Primal Bowls started with a focus on acai, coconut, and pitaya bowls, but as the business grew, they added savory options like avocado toast and salads, as well as smoothies and fresh-pressed juices. The couple takes pride in sourcing only the best ingredients and creating authentic, high-quality products. “It’s a pure acai sorbet,” Vince said. “We don’t mix it. We don’t blend it. You can taste the difference in it. We take pride in that.” They took over their Yorktown location from another cafe, which left behind an espresso machine. Although it wasn’t part of their original plan, Vince and Evelyn called an audible and added coffee to their menu. Vince said that owning a business has been a rewarding experience, as it allows him to give back to the community and create something that people enjoy. He added that the town’s small-business-friendly environment, combined with the support of the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce, has made the couple feel welcome. “Everyone’s telling me, ‘I’m so happy you’re here.’ It makes us feel welcome because they want us to stay.” Looking ahead, Vince and Evelyn are eager to continue growing Primal Bowls and providing high-quality, healthy food options to their customers. Despite the challenges of running a business, Vince believes that diving into the chaos and learning to deal with stress is what helps a business grow. Ultimately, he said, the couple’s passion for their product comes from “a place of love.” PRIMAL BOWLS FROM PAGE 38 Primal Bowls 1877 Commerce St. Yorktown Heights 914-214-8371 @primalbowls on Instagram www.primalbowls.com Catherine Duff-Poritzky Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker M 914.960.5577 [email protected] 1857 Commerce Street Yorktown Heights, NY 10598 Experience Sells in Any Market. PAGE 40 – THE YORKTOWN CHAMBER DIRECTORY - 2023 Suburban Wines has been a staple of Yorktown for more than six decades, providing customers with a wide selection of wines and liquors from around the world. Dan Spadola, the store’s current owner, is dedicated to maintaining the high standards set by his predecessors. “We seek out the latest and greatest offerings that the wine world has to offer and present it in a way that is relatable,” Spadola says. “It’s not pretention. It’s an easy way to enjoy wine.” Suburban Wines has always been ahead of the curve, with its staff constantly tasting and testing new wines to add to their inventory. “We’re not just putting anything on the shelf,” Spadola explains. The store was also one of the first to offer an in-store tasting experience, which has garnered a loyal following of customers who come in every Friday night and Saturday afternoon to try new wines. When the COVID-19 hit, Suburban Wines was well-position to take advantage of the new reality thanks to its existing delivery business. “The thing that came out of COVID for us was we were able to reach new customers who have since stayed around,” says Spadola, who came to Suburban in 2014 as a manager and wine buyer. The 38-yearold Middlebury resident bought the store in 2021. Despite challenges like inflation, Suburban Wines remains a value-driven store that has taken on some of the cost to keep prices reasonable for its customers. For Spadola, the most rewarding part of owning the store is the relationships he’s built with his staff and customers. “Everyone who works here has been here longer than I’ve been here,” he says. “These are forged friendships with people who started off as customers and are now close family friends.” Suburban Wines’ focus is on small-production wines from around the world, as well as a wide selection of liquors, including over 180 U.S. whiskeys. They also have a high-end wine room with some of the rarest wines in the world, as well as one of the largest selections of organic wines in the area. “You can pick up a bottle of wine for weeknight pasta night or anything for a special occasion,” Spadola said. Customers can also take advantage of the store’s local delivery van and popular wine club, which offers special discounts to frequent buyers. To Spadola, wine is more than just a beverage. “Wine, to me, tells a wonderful story,” he says. “There’s a romanticism of opening a bottle of wine, sharing a glass of wine over food and conversation. Wine is just that conduit that brings a lot of people together.” And while Suburban Wines may be a business, it’s also a vital part of the Yorktown community, supporting many fundraisers and causes. In turn, when Spadola needs a hand, the Yorktown community is quick to answer the call. “Yorktown is great in that regard, and it keeps getting better and better.” Aging like a fine wine Suburban Wines is a household name in Yorktown EXISTING & GROWING BUSINESS Suburban Wines 379 Downing Drive, Yorktown Heights 914-962-3100 suburbanwines.com Suburban Wines owner Dan Spadola Suburban Wines was well-position to take advantage of the pandemic, already having a delivery service for local customers. PAGE 42 – THE YORKTOWN CHAMBER DIRECTORY - 2023 Yorktown’s newest indoor family-fun center has arrived, and it’s packed with wall-to-wall games and activities for kids of all ages. John Iorio has a vision for providing family fun year-round, and he’s taken a step toward that goal with his new business, Pit Stop. Located on the first floor of the Jefferson Valley Mall, the seasonal space is in some ways a trial run for Iorio, who eventually wants to open an even larger indoor family-fun center. “I think I can do it better than any place out there,” said Iorio, who wants to provide Yorktown residents with the family entertainment they deserve. Iorio is also the owner of Funtime Amusements, which for three decades has provided bounce houses, rides, games, and more for private parties and community events, which usually come a halt when the cold weather arrives. The Mahopac resident saw Pit Stop as an opportunity to provide his staff with work during the wintertime. “The mall has this big space here, so we came in, repainted it, and brought in a whole bunch of arcade games,” Iorio said. Pit Stop also has rides, a bounce house, micro-reality racing, billiards tables, pinball machines, bumper cars, and more. Families can also rent a space for children’s parties. The seasonal space was slated to close in the spring when outdoor events resume; however, Iorio chose to extend his stay. He’s no stranger to pivoting his business to meet the needs of the times. For example, the pandemic necessitated a shift to at-home celebrations. In addition to the usual rides and games for house parties, Funtime Amusements started offering balloons or yard signs for milestone events, an inflatable drive-in movie screen, and contactless visits from the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus — an alias that Iorio has assumed many times over the years. “I can’t imagine how many mantles or Facebook posts or ornaments have pictures where I’m playing Santa,” said Iorio, who is a Yorktown Chamber of Commerce board member. Pit Stop brings family fun to Yorktown John Iorio, center, with his son John and wife Gigi in the bumper cars Inflatable axe throwing Pit Stop has several classic pinball games. Micro-reality racing is a bit hit. EXISTING & GROWING BUSINESS SEEPIT STOP PAGE 43

Iorio shared what keeps him motivated after 30 years in business. “When I get to an event or when I get to the house, and the kids see the ‘bouncy guy’ there, and their eyes light up,” Iorio said. “I continue to do what I do because of all of the kids and their expressions and making a child’s day happy, making a family happy.” Iorio and his wife, Gigi, also own Play Connection, which is located on the second floor of the Jefferson Valley Mall. In describing the differences between his two enterprises, Iorio compared Funtime Amusements to “takeout” and Play Connection to “sit-in.” The latter was born in 2015 and offers arcade games, bounce houses, and more. Rather than requiring quarters or tokens, Play Connection allows individuals to pay hourly. Iorio said his three enterprises offer “something for everybody.” Borrowing a line from Barnum and Bailey, Iorio said he seeks to entertain “children of all ages,” whether they are 2 or 92.
