PAGE 4 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE SOMERS RECORD – SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 BY TOM WALOGORSKY EDITOR This weekend, we will gather and take time to appreciate the things that make our town special. And this year our community has a lot to be proud of and grateful for. It’s time to once again Celebrate Somers! In the years that I have served as editor of The Somers Record I have been continuously reminded of the spirit and unity of the people who live here. The paper tries to encompass every aspect of life in our town, including government, education, sports, community, commerce, and culture. We have been invited to see the opening of new businesses in town, celebrate achievements within the community, and be on the sidelines when the Tuskers bring home the big win. However, we have also been there when the Somers community has faced hardships. It’s easy to come together to celebrate graduations, state championship wins, and Circus Day. But we have also seen how the people of Somers unite in the wake of tragedy. In instances where members of our community have been in need, Somers answers the call every time. In the wake of loss always comes a helping hand and a sense of unity. That is what truly makes our community special. As we prepare to celebrate Somers, I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude to everyone in town for everything that you do to help our publication serve you each week. Thank you to all of our town officials, educators, business owners, and anyone who has called with a story idea, submitted a photo, or just took a minute to offer a kind word about the paper. YOU are what make Somers special.   A reason to celebrate Scenes from last year’s Celebrate Somers! Annalise Costello PHOTOS: ROB DISTASIO The Somers Lions Club Tim Lee and Helena Frattarola

What is the best thing about being a part of the Somers community? PAGE 6 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE SOMERS RECORD – SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 Every town has a center and we value that the Somers Library and Reis Park are the center of our town providing spaces for family, community, teamwork, exploration, wellness, and entertainment. We value the trees, open spaces, and the resources to help raise our children. And we value the many opportunities the community has to acknowledge and honor our heritage, celebrate our achievements with parades for our championship teams, and come together to heal and support one another when there is loss in our community. The upcoming 5K Trail Race and 1 Mile Family Fun Run is an example of one of the community events hosted at Reis Park that benefits the Somers Library. We appreciate our role in bringing improvements to our town’s cultural and intellectual center and look forward to helping bring the new teen area to life. PAGE 8 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE SOMERS RECORD – SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 Celebrating a half century of fun BY JESSICA JAFET CONTRIBUTING WRITER Wrapping up the season at Summer Trails Day Camp in Granite Springs was extra special this year as the camp proudly marked its 50th summer of providing enriching and memorable experiences for area youngsters. Todd Seideman, one of the camp’s Associate Directors, said he can understand why it has been around for such a long time. “I think Summer Trails is a very unique place and a very special place; when you pull into the property, you get a warm and fuzzy feeling—it is a down to earth camp where every kid can shine and be the best version of themselves and be accepted for who they are—which I think is the best thing about it,” he said. The day camp, which welcomes children from three years old up to rising eighth graders, along with its program for leaders-in-training (who are students entering ninth and tenth grades), offers a multitude of activities, sports, arts, and more on 20 acres of bucolic grounds. Set amongst nature trails and a lake, with two heated swimming pools, an archery range, basketball courts, athletic fields and creative arts facilities, it is known for offering a rich and wholesome outdoor experience. Campers enjoy daily instructional swim, along with dance, lacrosse, miniature golf, and STEM activities. “This past year, we installed a brand-new aerial ropes course and a zip line; each and every year we like to add new and exciting things—our goal is to have new hobbies and experiences that campers can take with them throughout the year,” Seideman added. Amawalk resident Meridith Markolovic (also a staffer) and her husband Marco, said that choosing to have SEE TRAILS PAGE 8 PHOTOS COURTESY OF SUMMER TRAILS DAY CAMP Summer Trails Day Camp SOMERS VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT INTERESTED IN SERVING IN YOUR COMMUNITY? SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE SOMERS RECORD – PAGE 9 PHOTOS COURTESY OF SUMMER TRAILS DAY CAMP their three children attend Summer Trails, was a wonderful decision. “The camp has been a venue for personal growth for not only me, but my three children allowing them to become resilient, independent, and have a stronger sense of self, while socializing, making new friends, and learning new skills,” Markolovic said.  “In a world full of screen time, nothing beats the magic of unplugged opportunities for memories full of activities, teamwork, and time spent together at camp.” To commemorate the milestone, the camp held days of special activities and celebrations including a goldrush themed birthday for the staff and campers. The group indulged in ice cream sundaes and an evening of activities for families, in addition to another huge party that was held at the end of the camp session. Food trucks and games brought the entire group together in honor of the camp that they love. Originally, the Summer Trails grounds belonged to Dr. Molly Cohl, who ran a small day camp that included games, arts and crafts and a little petting zoo, according to the camp’s website.  Ownership of camp changed hands a few times, with the newest group taking over in 2022. All throughout, the operation has carried on the enduring traditions that began in 1974, while continuously making improvements to its facility and programming options—always with growth, safety and enjoyment in mind.  With nearly two decades of leadership, Jamie Sirkin, Dave Parent and Debi Kelly continue to serve as onsite directors who operate “in the spirit in which the camp was founded, treating each child as if they are their own.” Staffer Christy Cervone, who is a group leader for first and second graders, said Summer Trails has been a formative place for both herself, and now her young child as well. “I first worked at Summer Trails as a college student and am now back working here on the Leadership Team after 20 plus years away,” Cervone said. “Watching my Kindergartenaged daughter play the day away on this property is truly invaluable; unless you experience it yourself, it is hard to explain and understand how truly special a place this is.” For more information about Summer Trails, visit www. summertrailsdaycamp.com. It is no secret that Somers Historical Society celebrates Somers all year. Quite frankly it is one of their missions to share local history with the community. Over the past year, Girl and Boy Scouts from the community have stepped up to enhance the Society’s digital offerings on YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud and New York Heritage Network through the creation of specialized mobile apps featuring some aspect of local history. First, Robert Moore III, created a website, with a companion QR code, featuring the history of the Somers Hamlet National Register District. The sign is located in Bailey Park next to the Hachaliah Bailey Memorial Gazebo. Most recently, members of Girl Scout Troop #1457 created an educational scavenger hunt of sorts about the history of Reis Park and Caroline Wright Reis. Entitled “CWR Hunt,” downloadable from the mobile app Goosechase, this hunt takes you throughout Reis Park and Wright Reis Homestead properties asking the participant to take photos or general questions along the way! It’s telling how many people who I graduated with have returned to raise their families here. The preschool now has second generation students attending and I believe that is a result of the strength and support our town exemplifies. The Somers community comes together to support each other when families are in need. My family experienced it firsthand when my brother passed away and we started a not-for-profit (Patrick Casabona Jr. Memorial Fund). The outpouring of love and the giving nature of this town is unparalleled. That helped my family through our most difficult time. We can see over and over again when families in our community experienced the loss or need help, everyone comes together. From meal trains to supporting the local biz community, our town has a sense of community that runs deep and through generations. I often say it takes a village to raise our children… but also a supportive community like Somers. - Amanda Casabona-Cohen What brought you and your business to Somers? I grew up in Somers and went through the Somers School system. When it was time to raise my children we looked throughout Westchester, then ultimately settled Somers as it had what we were looking for… sports, clubs, academic support, a close-knit and supportive community.  Little Peoples has been a staple in the Somers community for over 25 years. I was a teacher in the school starting in 2012, and when the owner, Jane Fulton, was retiring in 2018, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to become the new owner of this little gem in our town. I truly love being part of the next generation within our community and seeing our youngest students grow and learn. The country feel, the history or the great location. But it’s really no contest for me, it’s the people. Decent, hard-working people that make Somers such a wonderful community to live and work in. PAGE 18 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE SOMERS RECORD – SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 BY CAROL REIF STAFF WRITER “Behind Closed Doors,” the latest art show to take place at Coldwell Banker’s offices in the historic Bailey House has been getting “great reviews,” according to the real estate brokerage. “We are honored to host these talented artists and add to the culture of our Somers community,” said senior managing director Tammy Benkwitt after the opening in late July. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, the show runs through Sept. 28. The gallery will also be open to the public during the Celebrate Somers festivities on Saturday, Sept. 23, and will include a special poetry reading event beginning at 1 p.m. “Behind Closed Doors” features seven local artists. Jose Mendoza, a native of Puerto Rico, grew up in the South Bronx. He majored in advertising design in college and worked in the health care industry for more than 25 years as an art director. Mendoza took up painting 18 years ago and plans to carry on with the craft for the rest of his life, he says. Show curator and participant Frances Bregman Schultzberg has been teaching the exploration of arts and crafts for 40 years. She started as an easel painter, then moved on to pottery, sculpture, metalsmithing, jewelry making, and woodwork. Schultzberg has come back full circle, returning to her first love – painting. A student once asked her: “Why?” “My honest response was, it’s easier than getting a divorce,” she said. Artist Lynn Harrington’s works focus on “the interplay of light on objects and on human form.” “I strive to paint what it reveals, as well as what light conceals.  I paint from life using north light - inspired by the quiet beauty in common household objects as well as in people,” she said. Harrington maintains a studio in Pound Ridge. She said to her, “painting, like prayer, is a form of communion with the ultimate Light, and with my deepest self.” Adelaide “Addie” Polito, a Somers resident since 1994, is deeply into mixed media and other craft/art projects. Leslie Bioux studied studio art with an emphasis on painting at SUNY Oswego. Also a poet, she has explored pastels, figure drawing, abstract painting, jewelry making, and graphic arts. Bioux’s latest interest is printmaking. She loves to “create layers and textured surfaces.” Photographer Howard Robinson, now retired as a teacher, had a long career in the social work arena, according to his bio. He was a restaurant worker, a foster care caseworker, a clinical social worker in therapeutic nurseries, a therapist, and a research partner at the Fordham Center for Trauma Education. Robinson also worked as a global mental health consultant in China, Taiwan, Israel, Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Rwanda. He says he has always had his camera by his side whenever he traveled. The Heritage Hills resident says he loves shooting landscapes in different countries “that capture something about the culture and life of the people who live there.” Illustrator, painter, and musician Julian Allen has been drawing since the age of 2. His works in pencil and charcoal were exhibited all over the lower Hudson Valley when he was in high school. Allen majored in painting and illustration at the Hartford Art School. His senior thesis was about “family found and family lost over the years,” he says. While in college, Allen also studied instrumental performance. “As human beings we all experience different things and events that happen in our lives which could cause us to be happy, depressed, angry, etc. It’s good that we can all relate to our emotions and certain events once in a while,” he said in his bio. Allen’s recent projects have focused on album covers and portraits of cars, people, and animals. He especially likes to do portraits of renowned Black figures such as Nelson Mandela, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Bob Marley.
